Part II: Shops at the Mall

1. You are planning to lease space for a new mall that has one million square feet of leasable space. Determine how much space you would allocate for each type of specialty shop by completing the table below.
Type of ShopPercent of MallAllocated Leasable Space
Womenâs Clothing25
Menâs Clothing10
Food15
Service5
Shoes10
Jewelry3
Family Items7
Gifts17

Total

2. Using the guidelines, about how much of the mallâs space would not be leased? What would you do with the remaining space? Explain your decision here.

Making a Scale Drawing
3.Make a scale drawing of your mall, showing how you will allocate leasable space. Be prepared to share your drawing with the rest of your class. Consider the following:
â¢Some stores will be bigger than others.
â¢Stores competing for the same business must not be located next to each other.
â¢A written or visual plan for dealing with traffic flow (walking) in the mall must be included.
â¢A mall will have two stories, and both floors must be included in your drawing.
â¢A food court should be located on the mallâs second floor.

4.Complete the table with your calculations:

Answer
1) 1,000,000ft^2 leasable space
25% = 0.25(1,000,000) = 250,000ft^2
10% = 0.1(1,000,000) = 100,000ft^2
15% = 0.15(1,000,000) = 150,000ft^2
5% = 0.05(1,000,000) = 50,000ft^2
10% = 100,000ft^2
3% = 0.03(1,000,000) = 30,000ft^2
7% = 0.07(1,000,000) = 70,000ft^2
17% = 0.17(1,000,000) = 170,000ft^2
_____
92%

2) 92% is allocated, so 8% remains unused.
0.08(1,000,000) = 80,000ft^2

The rest is up to you.
