1. Never give a woman any kind of household appliance or something that is going to make "housework" easier. For instance, a blender, a toaster, a new vacuum, one of those mops they advertise on tv that does everything but suck the life out of you, anything in a informercial. The only wise choice is a new washing machine with a turbo spin cycle. (Makes laundry day go by pretty fast when you can at least sit on it during spin-dry and end up smiling the rest of the day.)

2. Any bulk cleaning supplies, "honey, I got you that large box of Tide you have been wanting." "This Windex should last you a while." "I got a good deal on the industrial strength toilet bowl cleaner." All I can say is, be prepared to run. I have faith that if you would have at least stopped and thought about what would be a much more intimate gift, you would have had the sense to spring for the $5 Chia Pet you were eyeing in Kmart.

3. Any sharp objects made by Ronco which slices or dices, or a set of ginsu knives. These may one day be used as a weapon against you when you come home with lipstick on your collar after a "night out with the boys."

4. Do not buy gifts for yourself and pretend they are for her. "Honey, I'm sure you'll get a lot of use out of the new drill I bought you." By then she will have put it to good use by drilling a quarter inch hole into the side of your skull for even thinking she would accept such a lame gift. After a gift like this, you probably won't be around for NEXT Christmas.

5. Any lingerie made of flannel, such as a pair of feet pajamas with a trap door in back. A Little Mermaid or Barney cartoon character nightgown. It gives her the idea that you do not consider her the sexy woman that she is. Take out that wallet and buy her something sexy from Victoria Secret (just like you did for your mistress or other girlfriend).

6. No name perfume which costs you $1.99, such as Eu de Toilet, which actually smells like the bathroom, moldy fruit, or your dirty socks. If you are going to buy her perfume, spring for the brand names.

7. Any type of cubic zirconia jewelry you see on the Home Shopping Network. It will be quite embarrassing when she is showing off that fabulous diamond to her friends and tries to cut glass with it. (We actually test them you know.) Also, now would not be a good time to buy her that set of diamond nipple clamps you always wanted to, you know how we like to show off our jewelry and it could get embarrassing at the New Year's party when she decides to show them off to your buddies.

8. Please do not buy her clothes because you think for one minute you have good taste in woman's clothing. Well, perhaps you might if you are a transvestite, but all in all, believe me, she'll smile and say its beautiful while choking back tears and mumbling under her breath, "were the hell would I ever wear this outfit without being arrested for bad taste?" An additional hint, plaids do not go with stripes (even though you think your golfing outfit looks just fine). Its a known fact to the rest of the world that that is a taboo. In the Northeast, thats like wearing white after Labor Day.

9. Do not give her a gift certificate to Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. Most men would know better, especially the ones who have learned the correct response to "do these pants make me look fat." If you are one of the poor souls who still doesn't get it and purchased a gift like this, be prepared for the silent treatment for a month. (Although that may be something you would actually look forward to.) A better alternative would be hiring a Chippendale dancer as a personal trainer to get her motivated into getting fit.

10. Last but not least, never buy a woman anti-wrinkle cream, or a book on "How not to be Nasty Sunday through Saturday." These are not considered gifts, they are considered reasons for seriously injuring the person who bought it and just may stand up in court of law.

The ticket/card idea is great. Some women enjoy receiving a gift hand crafted from the one they love and they cherish them for all time. But, I was thinking along the lines of a jewelry. This time of year, Macy's, Kmart, and Walmart will have 70% off or more, discounts.

Last year, my son was short on cash and really wanted to give me a gift. I explained to him, it was not necessary and he insisted. We went to the mall in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and ended up in Macy's. He purchased a diamond necklace-earring combination originally selling for $189 for $27. Hey, I was definitely a happy camper.

Shop around on paper. Look in Wednesday's and Sunday's newspaper for ads. Keep an eye out for the sale days and take her to pick out what she likes. She probably already knows you are short on cash, so don't be ashamed. Many Americans now-a-days are short on cash due to the current employment or should I say lack of employment crisis.

Hey, if you prefer to keep it a secret until Christmas, get the Teddy Bear; but, also get a small trinket and put it around the Teddy's neck, she will love the gift.

One, she's not that weird. Everything she does has been done in triplicate over the last 50 years of popular culture. If your idea of individuality is copypasta of everyone who came before you, but adding nothing unique of your own to the process..then yeah, she fits.

Role model? That's different. She was a talented musician by the age of four. No one paid much attention to her until she started stripping. I think it's a sad reality of how gifted women are viewed in our society. T&A first, talent optional. The overt sexuality doesn't bother me, and she is at least not whiny like 90's pop stars who wrote their own stuff, but it seems like she's deliberately holding back talent and intelligence in order to have popularity. I'm just left expecting more of her because I know she, unlike Perry, Ke$ha and other empty mannequins, is very capable of producing more.

In anticipation of the soon to be resurrected biblical prophets and patriarchs, Joseph Rutherford, president of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society commissioned the construction of a house in San Diego, California. This house was to become home for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Samuel and all the rest mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11. However, when the biblical party failed to appear, the embarrassing Beth-Sarim incident had to be repressed.

Beginning in 1920, Rutherford declared, "As we have heretofore stated, the great jubilee cycle is due to begin in 1925. At that time the earthly phase of the kingdom shall be recognized." How would it be recognized? What event would trigger the ushering in of the kingdom?

Rutherford explained, "Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly those named by the Apostle in Hebrews chapter eleven, to the condition of human perfection" (Millions Now Living Will Never Die, pp. 89-90).

This was an exciting prophecy. Jehovah's Witnesses around the world anticipated their cause being justified by the physical manifestation of these biblical patriarchs. When 1925 did come, but Abraham and the rest did not, some of Rutherford's followers left the fold. Others still believed that though they were late in their anticipated time of arrival, the Hebrews 11 crew would be back shortly. Even though it had not occurred by 1929, it was still a topic of much excited anticipation.

There was no âprophecyâ by Rutherford nor had any other Witness ever claimed to give prophesies.

It is an irrefutable fact that Jehovah's Witnesses' very doctrine has ALWAYS been that the gifts of inspired prophesying and direct communication from God ceased after the Apostles died. And since the 1800's they have repeatedly stated in their literature that they do not foretell the future and they are not infallible.

This is a belief that has NEVER changed from their modern day inception as Bible Students to the present day.

Notice this sentence in the "Purpose" statement that appeared in EVERY issue of the Watchtower up to the mid-70's: "No, The Watchtower is no inspired prophet, but it follows and explains a Book of prophecy..."


Now, did early JW's (Bible Students) have incorrect understandings of Bible prophesy? Yes, of course, as did nearly every other religion of that age.

Witnesses feel no great embarrassment regarding Beth-Sarim. As you can see it is clearly described in our publications for all to see. Witnesses freely admit that they have at times changed their beliefs. But of course even the Apostles had to change their beliefs regarding their understandings of end-times (Lk.19:11; 24:21; Ac.1:6). So any criticisms regarding Witnesses changing their understanding of prophecies would also condemn the Apostles!

Witnesses we appreciate the fact that the Scriptures said that knowledge would "increase" in the last days (Dan 12:4). So, JWs don't pay much attention to the mistaken ideas that the faithful patriarchs would need a place to live due to an early resurrection, or to any other misunderstanding by early Witnesses from 50 to a hundred years ago. Because it just doesn't matter, nor does it disprove what we believe now.

Further any criticism on this is hypocritical because EVERY religion has changed it's beliefs and practices over the same time period!

We might ask others on this forum the question: "How concerned are you about your religion's past beliefs that black people were cursed, that slavery was "Christian," and that racial intermarriage was condemned by the Bible?"

Are you embarrassed when you realize that your religion used to teach that hell was literally in the center of the earth? Or when your own theologians were denying that women had souls, or preaching that anesthesia during childbirth was from the devil?!!

Witnesses regularly study our history, but, do other religions willingly tell you about the uninformed things their predecessors believed?"


Most religions have now admitted many of their past beliefs were false, so is it fair to go back fifty to a hundred years to their religion's roots and point out everything that was wrong, especially if it has corrected it's understandings? No, although a effective debate tactic, it would be unreasonable and a logical fallacy.

The very fact that critics of Witnesses constantly resort to such ridiculous arguments only proves that they realize that they have no real evidence against our beliefs now.

What would be a nice Christmas gift for a terminally ill grandfather?

I want to do something special for him his last Christmas. My parents usually don't go to the family get together but I am going to try to get them to go this year. Usually we just visit Christmas Eve to accommodate my other set of grandparents who are a big Spanish family. What would be a special gift someone would enjoy. He has terminal cancer where he likely will live until Christmas but was given about a year in August. He already has a long photo album with tributes from everyone that my cousin put together at his 75th birthday, he is 78.

Depends on lots of things. Is he able to walk? Out doors? Does he like to fish? Even if he were in a wheelchair and on oxygen he could go out on a fishing pier if he likes that sort of thing.

If he is able to get out, and has some endurance, take him to something he likes, a Pro Baseball game, or football. Take him to his favorite bar if he has one. Spend time with him and while doing that, if you can let him enjoy for a while something he always enjoyed, that would be a real gift!

I feel that gift giving has gotten out of hand. It seems like you have to give a gift for everything now; weddings, birthdays,Christmas, graduations, showers, celebrations, christenings, now births, good grades, retirement, etc. Seems everything requires a gift. It's greedy to expect a gift all the time. Some things I understand like a wedding or a birthday. But I hate being expected to buy a gift all the time. Yet, I feel like I am being rude if I don't. How come we have to reward everyone for everything? Gifts are meant to be something special or given for a very special occasion. They are meant to be an afterthought, not to be expected.

I think it's wrong of people to expect gifts for everything. I understand baby showers, but if I bought a gift for a baby shower, why should I buy another gift for the birth?

Only buy gifts for events you feel a gift is necessary or when you feel moved to buy a gift (sometimes I do just because, but only for people with whom I'm very close). If you feel a little bit guilty, a card will suffice.

Debenhams, Argos, BHS, Boots, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and House of Fraser. I think they all probably have websites. Personally I'd go for Argos who have stores in most cities here, and they are excellent for people who are setting up a home as they sell all sorts and are reasonably priced.

So long as it is a womens only shower, for prizes you could make up little pamper packs. It doesn't have to be large, expensive OR baby orientated when it comes to prizes.

Packs with things like scented candles, mini champayne bottles, chocolates, small photo frames, lip balms/gloss, bath oils/soaps, body lotions, shower gel, loofah...
Just pick 3-4 small items per pack and wrap up in clear cellophane and decorate with curling ribbon and bows and it will look lovely, be practical and a treat for nearly every woman.

or just boxes of chocolates always go down a treat! Or inexpensive bottles of wine or champayne.

Hey, mahn! If the only things you know about Jamaica all come from a Bob Marley song, then get ready to learn a whole lot more as we explore the lifestyle, holidays & festivals, language and foods of wonderful Jamaica!

Family life in Jamacia is centered more around the mother-child realtionship than around the husband-wife realtionship. Children, not marriage, mark a woman's passage to adulthood. Even today, if a man leaves his family, his children will stay with their mother and her extended family. The women thus plays a central and decisive role in the family. She has access to birth control and will have children when she wants them. Primary health-care clinics provide prenatal and postnatal services for mothers and children.

A Jamaican child spends most of his or her growing-up years with the mother and sees little of the father, who may be working far from home. When they finish school, many young Jamaicans, especially males, go to Kingston to find jobs. Young Jamaican women who have finished formal education may work in various sectors of the economy, such as health care, the civil service, or free- trade zones. Many Jamacians work in the hotels as waiters and housekeeping staff. People also make money by selling food & handicrafts to tourists on the beach. People can lose their jobs easily if the tourisim industry is not highly productive.

Jamaican weddings are big celebrations involving a lot of expense and preparation. Before the wedding, the parents of the young man and woman have a formal meeting. Presents from friends and relatives start arriving long before the wedding day, sometimes months in advance. A common gift is eggs to be used to make the wedding cake. The grandmothers of the couple tradtionally help to choose the couple's clothes for the ceremony. On the night before the wedding, most guests will stay up singing and eating. The church ceremony is an occasion for everyone to dress in their best clothes. The ceremoy is fairly short and is followed by the cutting of the wedding cake, which is typically a fruit cake filled with raisins,currants, and other fruit soaked in rum and wine. Speeches are then made before the happy event ends with a large feast and more merrymaking that continues into the early hours of the morning.

Jamaica has ten public holidays each year, including Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter. The island also has several festivals. Jamacians celebrate their Independance Day on the first Monday in August. Song and dance events & contests lead up to the day. The festival ends with a costume show and grand parade. Jonkonuu dancing is a Christmas tradition. It began among Jamaicans African salves. Dancers wear colorful customes and spectacular masks. They sing & dance to the rhythm of drums, banjos, and other instruments. Jamacian folklore is rich with African traditions. Anansi, from West African folklore, is a spider man who can take many forms. He plays tricks on people to teach them a lesson. Obeah is a force that can do good or evil. To avoid Obeah, a Jamacian tries not to be too proud about good health or good fortune. Jamacians are proud of who they are. Their culture & traditions bring joy & meaning to everyday life.

Jamacia's offical language is English. Jamacian English vocabulary might give the impression that islanders have been caught up in a time warp. They have perserved some words and phrases found only in Shakespeare's works or in the Bible. Saying goodbye, for example, a Jamaican speaking patios may say "Peradventure I wi' see you tomorrow." A Jamaican might speak of an insect that "biteth like the serpent" or of a "righteous" court decision. Jamaicans are educated in Stanard English. In converstaion, however, Jamaicans mix Standard English wth colloquail words and expressions. The different language levels reflect Jamacia's social levels- the higher the level, the greater the use of Standard English. Among friends and family, pronounciation, vocabulary, and grammar depart radically from Standard English. Standard English will contine to be used in Jamaica because of its importance for international commerce.

Finally, Jamaicans eat many delicious foods that grow on the island. Yams, breadfruits (a large round seedless or seeded fruit with a texture like bread; eaten boiled or baked or roasted or ground into flour; the roasted seeds resemble chestnuts), mangoes, pineapples, bananas and plantains (a greenish banana with a high starch content. It is cooked and eaten as staple food.)are all home grown. Rice with red beans is a popular Jamacian dish. So is jerk meat, which is spicy grilled chicken or pork. A popular breakfast dish is Akee (The edible, fleshy, ripe aril of this tree, especially popular as a food in Jamaica. The seeds and unripe arils are poisonous.) and saltfish.

Clearly, Jamaica is much more than what is referred to in the contents of Bob Marley's song. Although one might not expect it to be, Jamaica is a matriarchial society in which the relationship between children and their mother's is central their upbringing. As would be expected in a matriarchial society, weddings are much more important and are celebrated based on that premise. With regard to holiday celebrations, there are many celebrations unique to Jamaica including their distinct independence celebration. Moreover, despite having English as their language, Jamaican's speak a bifurcated version of English with many remnants from the time of Shakesphere. Even the foods available in Jamaica are unique in that they are based on the culture and the types of vegetables and fish available in Jamaica. References to Jamaica in songs are clearly an oversimplication of the complex and unique culture that one can find in Jamaica. In fact, one could say that there are many nuances to Jamaica and no one lyrical representation no matter how inspired could in fact do them justice.

What do you think about having a baby shower list?

I know this is a party I cannot throw myself; however, I'm thinking about having a gift list with things I'll use. I think it's a good idea since most presents are clothes or things you don't use later. I'm thinking about including diapers, lotions, shampoo and creams, blankets, diaper bag, and so on.

haha, sorry, I didn't mean to include literally a "list", I'm just saying to include registry information together with the card.

While its tacky to include a gift request list with the invitation, it is customary to send along a gift registry. Its the same thing, its just more acceptable to say "Mary is registered at X store" rather than say "Mary wants diapers, lotion, shampoo, etc."

(as opposed to something a bit less personal, or something it would be too soon in the relationship to give), and then what should go in the gift basket? i was thinking maybe some funny or quirky things but also just general gifts your 18 year old girl would like
and maybe something with an inscription like a lighter (too manly?) or folding mirror thing that girls use

What is a good Santa gift for 18 yearold?

I am finished shopping but I can not think of a Santa gift for my 18 yearold daughter. In my house the Santa gift is always a big gift.
She has a phone, computer, car, etc.
Price range $100 to $300.
I got my 15 yearold a Chi straightener as her Santa gift is that big enough?
They are hard to buy for, all they asked for was clothes or boots.
My husband does not like giving gift cards or cash.

You could always buy them some jewelry (Tiffany & co. does amazing things and it's in your price range!)
