What's a truly great gift to get the woman who has everything?

gift for women online image

CanadianGi

There's a woman who recently helped me out. Not that it matters, but she's very wealthy - has everything imaginable under the sun plus more - and wants for nothing! I want to give her a small something to show my appreciation & gratitude. (More than just a heart-felt thanks.) Any ideas?

Answer
You could write a song or poem. (or draw/paint/make someonething) Something "original" is always a unique gift. I really like homemade gifts. You know the person was thinking of you when they made it.

I've seen places online where they will convert your photo into a watercolor, charcoal painting, etc. That might be a cute idea if she has a special family member or pet in her life. I think she'd appreciate having a pretty picture like this.

Does she have a favorite food? you can usually find unique chocolate, jellies, sauces, pasta, cheese, wine, coffee, tea, candies, etc. online too. Something simple, but she'd know you put in a little effort to find it.

For a really simple gift- a nice picture frame or album is usually a good idea. If you buy a smaller frame, you can display a gift card inside for a small add-on gift.

What would be a really good gift to get someone to let them know you miss them?

I work offshore and am gone a lot. I have one of the greatest women ever in my life. After being cheated on by my ex wife I want to make sure that this one knows how much she means to me. I try to let her know when I am home but I wanted to do something while I am out here to let her know that I love her and how much she means to me. I just don't want it to be the same old thing. Can someone help?

Answer
send her flowers from any online site like 1800 flowers, pick ones that make you think of her. And write that on the personal message. (if you want extra points, count how many days until your going to see her again...get that exact amount in chocolates and tell her to eat one choc. for everyday and by the last choc. you'll b there.

prison inmate wants a catalog to send gifts home?

kit-kat

How can I get a gift catalog for prisoners who want to send home flowers, candy or the like?

Answer
It depends upon where the inmate is housed. There are different rules from state to state, and sometimes from facility to facility. Most inmates are aware of what company has been approved for such purposes. Each inmate has a counselor, who is able to tell him about such things. The counselor will tell him what the name of the company is, and how to contact them for a catalog.

The sad thing is, most of these companies charge almost double what it would ordinarily cost to send such items. It's not fair, but it's the truth.

I just sent a birthday gift to my fiance in the Philippines and I forgot to ask at the post office. She told me that her brother in law sends a very large man size box over to his wife and it takes two months. But what about a book size box? How long would that take?

Answer
it depends on what service did you used. i send the same size to my brother and he got it in 9 days. i think i used global express. and my brother lives in metro manila area.

How do you bind two books in one cover?

Chihuahuii

For my brother's birthday gift I'm trying to make an art book where there is one cover (like a normal book) and two sets of "minibooks," so there will be one book on either side of the 9 x 11" cover. (The pages will be 8 x 11, so there will be two sets of pages that rest on the cover, and another two that hang off the side.) Does anyone know how to make this sort of book?

Answer
Really, it depends on the cover. Do you want it to be blank(because then all you have to do is glue a sheet of paper18X22 on both books, the front of the first and the back of the second, and both together) or do you want to keep the original covers?
In that case you'll have to make a new cover, double in width, from some kind cardboard or thicker paper, and saw or glue the margins of the books to it.
Or, for a simpler method, you could glue the back of the first book to the front of the second.

We are exchanging gifts at my office and I have no idea what to buy.
It should cost no more than US$20
any ideas?

Answer
If this is a grab bag, you will need to get something that could be used by either a man or a woman. You could get them something they could use at ther desk such as a mini water cooler, a reuseable and reheatable coffee cup with a pound of coffee, the same could go with a nice mug paired with chocolates and coffee, any gift card to a local restaurant would be good. Or you could always buy alcohol. That will spice up any office party! :)

How do I give a thank-you note to a whole office?

Q. My fiancee and I received a gift card as a wedding gift from my office. Who do I send the thank you card to? I'm the receptionist and I open the mail, so I can't just drop one in the mail addressed to the company. Do I give it to the person in charge of the office? Even though the gift was from everyone?

Answer
I think the first person has a great idea - bring some homemade goodies in for everyone as a way to say thanks. You can put a little note next to the goodies that expresses how much you appreciated the gift. Or send and email to everyone thanking them and letting them know that you have treats for them.

I wanted to give my mother a cat or kitten for her 35th birthday as a suprise, since she is a huge cat lover and has been wanting to get one for years . So I cannot have her come with me to an adoption shelter or similar place of business. If 18 or older, any suggestions on how to get her one?

Answer
You must be 18. And it's a bad idea to pick out a pet for another person. You can get a gift certificate for the adoption fee from a shelter, or print out one "good for one cat" type certificate on your computer, and wrap that up for her.

How to work Jaymar children's sewing machine?

wanderingn

I received this little metal red machine as a gift in the 70's. It runs on batteries. However, I do not have the instructions and am puzzled as to how it would actually sew because there is not a "bobbin". If I sew, it sews just the top thread which pulls out since there is no bobbin thread. Ideas?

Answer
That's a single thread chainstitch machine, from the sound of it. http://home.howstuffworks.com/sewing-machine1.htm Although there were some home machines made on that design early on, the disadvantage was that the stitching could be readily torn out. (My mother in law used to pick out a seam in her dress when she wanted to be sent home from school -- the family sewing machine was a Willcox and Gibbs chain stitcher.)

If you leave long tails of thread at the beginning and end of seams, you can secure them by threading the tail in a hand sewing needle, taking a few backstitches, and then pulling the end of the thread through the last loop and burying the end. If that makes no sense, I'll do you a photo tutorial of that finish. That'll work unless you've got busy little fingers like my mother in law's. <g>

How many gifts are you getting your kids for Christmas?

Natasha

I have three kids. I'm getting them 5 each. I shopped Black Friday so some gifts vary from $4 to $30. Grandma gets them the big gifts. We have a big family so we have nephews, brothers, sisters and in-laws. Happy Holidays.

Answer
I am a kid, well teen. From my main parent I get about two or three larger gifts about $75 in price or one huge gift like $300 then about three-five things between $5 and $70 and then one to two stockings filled with about ten-thirty items total of stuff mostly around $1-5 but a few things around $10
then another person who's like a second parent to me/was a parent kinda to me at one point gets me one thing usually just $15-50 or a giftcard equivalent to that
so from "parents/parent figures"
i get around eight things excluding stocking and about thirty things if you include stocking stuffers and get all in total like $500 i guess spent on me by parents/parent figures

How do I get started opening my own small store?

I've been debating with the idea of going out on my own - or continuing to work under someone else. My thoughts have leaned towards opening a school supply store, which would carry everything for students/teachers both. I live in a very small town - the only decent store we have is Wal-Mart. I used to be Asst. Mgr of a dollar store here, and alot of the parents/teachers/students would come in complaining because they needed to complete a project, or just needed one more thing off their school list, and Wal-Mart didn't have it. So, they would have to drive 40-60 minutes just to get what they needed. I think this idea would take off in a small town that's centered around its children and education, and it would be helpful to the parents as well. How do I get started? I have NO idea!!

Answer
The first step is to do your research. Starting a small business takes a lot of courage. But, as they say, courage does not pay the bills. To be successful â to stay in business â you need more than courage. You need a combination of hard work, skill, perseverance, and lots of luck.

Some things you need to consider:

- "How can I support my family while I build up by business?"
- How long will it take this business to reach the financial goal you have?
- How big is the school/student population in your area?
- Do you think the size of the market is enough to keep your business profitable?
- If not, what other things can you sell that this market would want?
- Do you have the resources to lease a store, buy inventories, and jumpstart the business?
- If none, are there resources that you may be able to get, keeping in mind that loan programs even that of SBA requires collateral and equity investment

You may want to read the article "How to Start a New Business Successfully" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol51/launch.htm , which lists six steps to launch a new business successfully:

1. Provide a benefit.
2. Determine the fit with your market.
3. Right timing is everything
4. Be ready to support your business
5. Develop a blueprint for success (your business plan)
6. Market, market, market

How do you start a business?

Carrie P

What's the best way to start a business from scratch? I have a really good idea for a retail store/cafe, but I don't have the first clue about how I should go about getting finance for it and where to open, or if I should even start as an online store first. Can someone please give me tips on the best way to start a business.

Answer
Starting a small business takes a lot of courage. But, as they say, courage does not pay the bills. To be successful â to stay in business â you need more than courage. You need a combination of hard work, skill, perseverance, and lots of luck.

Some things you need to consider:
- "How can I support my family while I build up by business?"
- "What are my abilities?"
- "Is there a market for the product or service I have chosen?"
- "How long will it take this business to reach the financial goal I have?"

Here are the basic steps to launch a new business successfully:

1. Provide a benefit.
2. Determine the fit with your market.
3. Right timing is everything
4. Be ready to support your business
5. Develop a blueprint for success
6. Market, market, market

I recommend that you start reading and learning more about the business you are planning to start. You did not specify the type of retail store you want (e.g. is it a clothing store, sports store, gift store, etc) but here are some guides to starting a retail operation

I suggest you start preparing your business plan. Even though you may not apply for loans from financial institutions, the process of business planning can help you think through your business. It can help you determine the costs involved, how to get suppliers to sell to you, how to market the store, expected profitability, etc. Here are sample business plans for a retail store that you can check out:

Sometimes you may want to have someone guide you as you start your business and help you with the right things to do. There are several places where you may be able to find a mentor:

Today is her birthday, and I think it's safe to say grandparents are the hardest to shop for. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Answer
Older people don't need much. Bring her flowers, wish her a happy birthday and give her a peck on the cheek. Stay as long as you can and talk to her over her happy life when she was young. Really, little things mean a lot to seniors.. there is no greater gift you can give to an older person except a little of your time, and it would mean more to them than anything else in the world.

My brother's wedding shower is next weekend and his wedding is in a few months.

When friends and cousins get married I usually do $35-$50 for a shower gift and $80-$100 for the wedding gift.

What is appropriate to spend for my brother? I was thinking $65 for the shower and $100 for the wedding. What do most people spend on close family?

Answer
What is appropriate is whatever you can afford to spend without it being a burden to you.

A good gift doesn't have to cost a fortune and just because you are related to someone doesn't mean you HAVE to spend a lot.

I spent probably $25 on the gift I got for my brother and his wife. My mom has this special Tupperware pickle jar that has a strainer that lifts the pickles out of the brine and has a fork built in so you never have to go fishing for the pickles, you just lift the strainer, and stab the pickle with a fork. Every time they saw it, my brother and sister in law would say "we wish we had one of those". So when their wedding shower invite turned up I said "Mom, talk to your Tupperware lady, order one of those pickle jars for me". I wrapped it up with a couple jars of their favorite pickles and for $25, it was easily one of their favorite gifts.

What could be an unusual gift for my best friend?

FRIEND

I have a very nice friend I want to gift her something that is unusual. I don't want to gift her the usual things that we give to our friends on their birthday or on different ocassions so please give some new idea.

Answer
Choosing a gift, remember - itâs not the object you choose that will make pleasure, but the way you present it to the recipient. Let it be a nail, but if you announce, that this will be the last nail in the coffin of your bitterest enemy, this gift will be welcome and remembered in years! What I want to say, presenting gifts takes 80% of creativity, 10% of understanding personâs interests and only 10% of the staff youâll choose to serve you for a present. Use any crazy idea, fill it with positive sense of turn it into a joke, perform the process of offering as a kind of ceremony, and you will be the King of Gifts!

You can invent it a legend to your ordinary gift and make it special. You just offer her a pebble of some unusual shape you picked up during your last vacation? Say, this pebble is so old, it has known dinosaurs and prehistoric men, and it will whisper Her its stories whenever she will have tedious time.

Good birthday present to give my husband while on our cruise?

Sweet Sout

We are going on a cruise for his 25th birthday and on his actual birthday I want to give him a birthday present, what would be a good idea? It's got to be something small that I can stick into my luggage without him noticing and something that we can easily take back home. What would be the best gift? Thanks in advance!!

Answer
If you'll be in port, go with an excursion or shore activity, geared towards what he likes. No danger of it being discovered early, and memories (to take back home!) last a lifetime.

And if you're feeling really adventurous and in a port where it's an option, go for something like this - guaranteed most memorable birthday ever!!!

How will you be remembering our brave men and women in uniform this Memorial day?

gift for vietnamese women image

Firestorm

Answer
How will I be remembering our brave men and women in uniform this Memorial Day? Well, I've done that for the past four days with special zeal and usually do it 365 since forever. I have a grand-daughter that my wife and I raised since she was 16 mo.old who is in the USMC with a rotary wing aviation unit. She turned down two modeling schools and two prestigious colleges so she could be a Marine. One grandson in the USAR who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, One grandson who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, completed BUDS, and is with a S.E.A.L. team God only knows where. Another grandson, who is serving with the USMC in Iraq and another enlisting after graduation from high school with the Army. So see, I honor not only them but all of our young men and women who wear any U.S. military uniform 24-7, 365- forever. Me personally? I remember faces and names of people who are no longer with us, and some who are, every day and night but especially so on this day. I remember places with no names, fire-fights, and battles, ( that meant nothing to history but sure as hell helped write it!)holding wounded and dying comrades in my arms, still hearing the song of the bullet, grenade and RPG explosions, artillery, Alfa- Sierra, and ARA requests, clicking the handset once for o.k., twice for " I can't talk now. Enemy close." ambushes, theirs and ours, downed bird missions, carrying the dead out in OD body bags anf knowing who they WERE, the cries for help and "Medic"!, the sounds of chopper blades that still brings back memories when I hear them today and look skywards, the medals that I earned with words on those certificates for "extreme valor", "gallantry in combat", "extreme heroism, or just plain heroism, while engaged with hostile forces", " for wounds received while engaged..", looking into the mirror on the wall and wondering where did that young man disappear to when I see my picture on the wall behind me in the reflection also, ( God! How I aged from 19 years old to an old man in three years.),remembering those days and what I did to earn those citations and wondering now, "Did I really do that"?, or " Could I ever do that yet... again"? Touching the scars on my legs, arms, forehead, nose, shoulders, from shrapnel and one ugly scar on my chest from a young North Vietnamese who shot me as I shot and killed him, the irregular round scar on my right thigh... another gift from the North Vietnamese, (semi-personal for me), wondering if perhaps some of them who made it through that war alive would remember me and me remember them. I wish them peace and happiness for they did no more or less than I. The latest nightmare about that war that I fought in for three years, 40+1 years ago today, and thinking it just seemed like only yesterday. My men. I got them all home alive but one and he and I walk together every day. I wished you would have listened to me that day Dave. Finally. my father, my uncles, cousins and friends who have crossed over and are no longer haunted by their wars and bad memories. Yes, I honor them all. There are 30 small American flags for my classmates and friends who died in Viet-Nam mounted on fence posts along my driveway, five medium sized American flags planted around the front yard flag-pole for my father, uncles, and cousins, one flag for two each, who served in WW2 and Korea, and on the flagpole a large American flag for all of those survivors of my war and for the young men and women of today's war, along with the POW/MIA flag underneath it and a blue star flag with four blue stars on it. But most of all, I remember. I never seem to be able to quit..... and doubt if I ever can, Yes, I remember.

What are meanings of a smile?

ngoc

In my country, Vietnam, people say a smile means happiness, disgust, sadness, anger, confusion, disbelief, apology, shyness, cunning, mock, sympathy, disappointment. They also point out that people smile when they feel uncomfortable, especially in front of a person they don't like, when they have to answer an embarrassing question...

What about the people in the US? Or in Japan?
Do have the same smile as the Vietnamese?

Answer
I suppose the people in the US smile when they are feeling some of those things.

But it is certainly not how we generally interpret or think of a smile, nor the main reason we would let smiles light up our faces.

We consider a "genuine" or "sincere" smile to be a sign of happiness or pleasure.

It might be possible to see
> a "tremulous smile" -- where the impulse to weep is also present
> a self-conscious smirk due to embarrassment
> a kind of "smile" that indicates comical disbelief, a laughing "Whaaa...???"
> a lips-drawn back kind of facial expression of anger (maybe more "showing the teeth" than "smiling")
> a mocking and insincere smile

People may use a smile to "cover up" the presence of some feeling that they don't want to share. But this is recognized as a deliberate falsification of an emotional display.

For example, if your favorite sister gives you a birthday gift that disappoints you, you may force a smile and pretend to be happy -- so as not to hurt her feelings. The goal is to mislead her with your smile into thinking you are happy. The smile does not "indicate" disappointment -- it "hides" it.

But if there were no reason to hide that you are disappointed, you would look "disappointed" (sad with a little pouting), but you would not smile.

I don't think most Americans would smile if they felt disgust, sympathy, or disappointment, and a smile is not the usual facial expression of sadness, anger, confusion, disbelief, cunning, etc.

I think that smiling when feeling negative emotions is a common practice in cultures where the display of negative emotions (maybe especially by women or children) is disapproved of.

Americans generally do not feel the slightest need to suppress or hide their negative emotions -- except in special and rare circumstances. There are differences from one individual to another about the acceptability of showing a negative emotion, but it is not a cultural prescription that everyone (-- or women -- or children -- or employees --) should not exhibit negative or challenging emotions.

How much do you think is appropriate to spend on Christmas presents amongst women friends?

Dani B

We have a group of 6 friends...all women & we are planning to do a Christmas gift exchange.
What do you think is the appropriate amount to spend?
I think that $50 is more than sufficient with the current economy & all.
Some people want to spend $100 - but I think this is too much as one of our group has young children & another has been laid off.
Am I being cheap????

Answer
I think $10 is fine. That's enough for a humorous cat book or some spring bulbs or packages of seeds or a small plant or clever bookmarks or cloth grocery bags (or the $1 ones from Trader Joe's that I gave one year) or some kind of ornament, like the one I got made in a Third World country with shiny magazine pages folded up & glued to an ornament or a necklace (like the $1 one I bought) or cat statue ($5) from flea market or thrift shop...You get the idea...something fun that says you care, but also something that's well, cheap. It's truly the thought that counts. Sometimes it really would be easier to spend more, but what for?

Here's another idea: Get a mug from a thrift store--I like the clear glass ones--& fill it with homemade cookies & tie it with a pretty ribbon. Or bake mini-loaves of bread or whatever, just enough for a single gal to slice & enjoy for a couple of days during the holidays.

Or how about a bottle of sparkling juice or flavored water in one of those bottle-sized gift bags, just in time for the New Year. Lots of us, as we get older, are happy if it's not wine or something with alcohol. It may be more welcome as a party gift if it's not, especially with all the crack-downs on drunken driving.

Again, what's that $50-$100 idea? We just never did that. Better to use it on family or 5 toys for needy kids or other charity donation or food for ourselves or just about anything. As you say, it's ridiculous to spend so much in this economy, & you certainly don't want people to feel indebted to spend this much just to maintain the friendship. Better to spend $20 per person & enjoy a special lunch together or pool your money to buy treats for coffee & brunch at someone's house.

Now that I think about it, why not forget the whole gift thing & host a brunch. Find out what a local women's shelter could use: new socks, kids' books, just little gifts, or whatever, & have each person bring that item instead of having an expensive gift exchange. Be the leader & get several friends to agree on that idea, & then you're on to it.

Alternatively, you could host a cookie exchange or a paperback book exchange, or whatever. Let your interests be your guide.

Enjoy!

I want to give somebody a gift certificate to get their arm pits waxed. How can i find a place in Eastern North Carolina that does that. Anyplace near Goldsboro, Fayetteville or Wilmington.

Answer
I have absolutely no idea where you can go in North Carolina because I'm in London (England) but I do know that most beauticians / beauty salons do some sort of gift certificate scheme. If it's for a nice gift, I would pick a more up-market place.

Any positive websites for those with breast cancer?

I am looking for positive websites for those who have breast cancer- all the ones I find are stories about how this person fought it and died at 41 or along those lines. Or death rates and statistics. Its hard not getting depressed about having the disease when everywhere I look online has my outlook as not good. Does anyone know of more positive sites?

Answer
Well, it would be impossible for any site concerned with cancer to be totally positive. It would be dishonest too - people DO die of breast cancer. There won't be a site that tells you your prognosis is really good if it isn't, but there are sites with stories and experiences from women with a wide variety of breast cancer journeys.

Personally I want to have all the statistics, but I know not everyone's like me in that respect.

If you use breast cancer forums, yes you'll find sad stories of people who've died; but you'll also find posts and stories from people who are still around years after diagnosis. Offhand, the person on breast cancer care's forums I can think of who's been around longest is 18 years post initial diagnosos. I may be wrong, there may be people who've survived longer.

I have to say I found 'Uplift' too upbeat and lightweight. I read it shortly after diagnosis, and it felt as if they were almost telling me breast cancer was a gift, and certainly telling me it wasn't serious.

Is the pink ribbon an international symbol for breast cancer, or is it just American? ?

bby.britty

I have a close family friend in Belgium who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. I am making a care package for her, so I was wondering if the pink ribbon is an international symbol for breast cancer. Also, if you have any ideas for gifts, that would be great.

Answer
How very thoughtful you are!

I believe the pink ribbon has become international.

I work with a group that does "care" packages for women with breast cancer. We include things such as cd's (both Melissa Ethridge and Olivia Newton John have cd's with songs of inspiration that are wonderful) and some "special" small books or cards with a strong message of hope.

I was far away from one of my sisters when she was diagnosed and her favorite thing that I sent was "arms" that I cut out of heavy paper. I sent it with a note that until I could get there myself, here was a hug whenever she needed it. Yeah, I know it sounds childish, but it made her laugh and let her know I was thinking about her.

I am helping a friend plan her 40th birthday-but she does want any gifts-she would prefer a gift card. I am not sure about the wording. What I am looking for is a catchy phase.

You cannot tactfully ask for gifts of any kind on an invitation. It is very rude. It's also not proper to host your own birthday party. There is no polite way to do what you're asking. Sorry.

Any suggestions for a birthday gift for a 40 year old man?

He is my good friend's husband. It is his 40th birthday party on Saturday. I have no clue what to get for his gift. He does not drink or smoke, lives a comfortable life, and is employed as a wholesale fitness equipment sales manager.
Any good ideas for a gift....gag gift or serious.
I welcome all suggestions.
