Gifts to give to an American from a British person?

Scarzii

I'm from England and I have a friend in America. I want to send her some stuff but i don't know what. I want it to be something they don't have in America so it's like an English gift. No food though. We are both teenage girls so something girly would be nice. I've already got her a 'Links of London' bracelet so any ideas similar would be great :) Thankyou

Answer
I know itâs might be more than you want to spend, but what about an internet purchase of a little something from Harrods - if you go onto the Harrods website and into souvenirs and into special offers - they sell great bags and stuff with the London buss theme or daisy bags, pens or cups - all Harrods branded and reasonably priced - I mean from £6 or so. Have a good look round there - I have attached a link below and thought that the gold make-up glitter bag looked great! It was only £7.95! There are teddies and biscuits - loads of good stuff for under £20! See what you think - it is exclusive and very British!

Gift for my 80-year-old great aunt?

JoMama

My great-aunt whom I am very close to just turned 80. We are having a HUGE party for her on Saturday, and I want to get her the perfect gift. She doesn't have any kids and isn't married, so my sister and I are like her grandkids and it's important that I get something meaningful and useful. Any ideas?

Answer
Does she have a cell phone? You could get her one with pre-paid minutes at Wal-Mart. That way she could call you all when she wanted and there is also a level of safety for her too.

The have a new cell phone called Jitterbug it has bigger numbers and it easier for older people to operate.

http://www.jitterbug.com/promotions/101106_landing.asp

Teach her how to operate the phone and she will appreciate the safety of a phone at her fingertips.

Also, ladies of a certain age like candy (a big box of good candy), perfume (find out her favorite, some lovely house slippers I got these Goody Bon Bons for my Mother-in-law she is 85 and she adores them:http://thedesignpatch.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=GG-BB

Try to find out what she wants and needs.

Perhaps a locket with photos of everyone or a photo album with everyone's photos of old times and new.

A soft warm robe for winter or some nice night gowns. Does she like to read? or watch TV - a subscription to a favorite magazine. Does she have cable TV? She might enjoy DISH network or cable.

Does she have a simple computer she can send email on? Older people really love sending emails and going on chat boards for seniors.

Coupons for your to help her with chores.

Gift certificates to the beauty shop for hair and nail sessions.

My Grandmother used to love Nantucket Briar lotion and perfume products by Crabtree & Evelyn. When I smell it today; I can remember her so vividly.

http://www.amazon.com/Crabtree-Evelyn-Nantucket-Scented-Lotion/dp/B00022VPAU

http://store.crabtree-evelyn.com/nan307162.html

A gift basket with all sorts of goodies for her that you pack yourself or get a good gift basket company to make for you.

Food gifts from Harry & David:

http://www.harryanddavid.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BECHomePageView?storeId=10051&catalogId=10002&langId=-1

Harry & David are the BEST I have been using them for years to gift and also send a gift to myself now and then. They have fantastic truffles.

How can I make his bday gift 80's themed but not lame?

peachy

My guy is turning 29 soon, and I want to remind him that he's a child of the 80's, and not almost 30.

What can I give him that is practical, cool, and 80's-themed? I don't want to get him something he's not going to use, like a He-Man action figure. That would be silly.

We've been dating for two months, so nothing overboard, either.

Answer
it's difficult to make the 80's not seem lame. the reason we love the 80's is because they were so lame!

what exactly did he love from the 80s? Get him an A-team dvd or something. I bought my gf a cool staypuffed marshmallow man figure from Ghostbusters because she loved him in the movie and was real sad when they killed him.

You could find out what his favourite 80s shows or movies were (mines Goonies, before you ask) and get him something to do with that

Whats the gift for 60th anniversary?

cging22

Answer
Here are some 60th wedding anniversary ideas and symbols to help in choosing gifts associated with the 60th marriage anniversary.
The tradition of celebrating a 60th anniversary came into popularity after Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee.

60th Anniversary Traditional Gift: Diamond which comes from the Greek word adamas which means unconquerable and enduring.
Many also believe that the fire in the diamond symbolizes the constant flame of love.

60th Anniversary Contemporary/Modern Gift: Diamond.

60th Anniversary Gemstone: Diamond.

60th Anniversary Color: Diamond white.

60th Anniversary Flower: There are no flowers traditionally associated with this anniversary. Put together a bouquet with one different white flower for each decade together. There is also a lovely lavender thornless rose bush called "Diamond Anniversary" and another one called "Diamond Wishes".

Ways to Celebrate Your 60th Anniversary:
Use sparkly glitter or crystal rhinestones on flowers, cards, centerpieces, gift wrap, balloons, etc.

For those in the United Kingdom, request a telegram from the Queen. http://marriage.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=marriage&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.royal.gov.uk%2Foutput%2FPage545.asp

For those in the United States, request a greeting from the Whitehouse. http://marriage.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=marriage&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fgreeting%2F

Gift Suggestions to Purchase for Your 60th Anniversary:
When considering gifts for the 60th anniversary, think twice before purchasing anniversary plates, jewelry, knick knacks, etc. as many senior citizens are trying to reduce clutter and possessions in their lives. A dinner at a special restaurant, tickets to a show (Buy Direct http://marriage.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=marriage&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kqzyfj.com%2Fclick-1649416-10284053), a trip (Buy Direct http://www.kayak.com/s/kayaksearch.jsp?tab=hotels), coupons to help with chores, etc. will probably be more appreciated.

Gift Suggestions to Make for Your 60th Anniversary:
Put together a CD with songs from the year you were married.

Assemble a memory photo album with pictures highlighting 60 years together. Include the wedding, children, grandchildren, friends, trips taken together, homes lived in, etc. A nice addition is to include stories from children and friends.

Time Capsule Ideas for Your 60th Anniversary: Create a time capsule of the wedding day. Include a list of popular songs, movies, news headlines, and events.

what is the gift for 60th wedding anv.?

billy jack

Answer
This is the 'diamond' wedding anniversary.

Because of this, all gifts should have at least some diamonds in them.

KEEP IN MIND THAT FLOWERS are not traditional for a 60th anniversary.

Quoted ideas from ehow.com:
1. Keep in mind that the traditional theme for anniversary number 60 is the diamond jubilee.

2. Analyze the recipient's style and tastes: Is he a diamond cufflinks type? Would she wear a rhinestone tiara?

3. Take a look at your budget. Will it best support a diamond necklace or rhinestones?

4. If this is a gift for a couple, consider interests that they share. Do they travel together, play sports or have common hobbies?

5. Be creative with the diamond theme. Traditional yet not-so-literal ideas include baseball diamonds, rhinestones, diamond playing cards, Diamond Head, diamond mines, or diamondback snakes or terrapins.

6. Turn those ideas into gifts: a cruise to Hawaii, season baseball tickets or even World Series tix, a trip to South Africa, or bridge lessons.

7. Think about smaller-scale presents, such as family photos in diamond-shaped frames or golf or tennis clothes with an argyle pattern.

8. Keep in mind that some people, especially senior citizens, may not want more stuff. As an alternative, consider services: a landscaper, a chef, free cab rides, a spa day, etc.

What's the best gift to give to a woman on christmas?

philip w

Answer
a man on christmas?

what woman sings the christmas song...the gift?

Liz S

..it goes and all i need is to hold you..or somrthing like that. thanks!

Answer
Gemlove9 got it half right. The female singer IS contemporary Christian songbird Susan Ashton along with country singer Collin Raye...BUT...it's NOT on any of her albums.

It's found on instrumental pianist Jim Brickman's Christmas album of the same name or on his VISIONS OF LOVE CD or his GREATEST HITS.

If you're more of a country fan, you can find it on various artists compilation "Mary Did You Know?: 17 Inspirational Christmas Songs From Today's Top Country Artists" or Collin's Christmas CD "Christmas : The Gift"

I've linked a non-official video that uses the song as well as several CDs that have it. (If Yahoo! doesn't pull the links for those...)

i have female pattern baldness.i have had hair transplant.i need more hair.i am 45.any more suggestion's?

kench

I am 45.i have female pattern baldness.i got hair transplant done 2 years ago it covers my front bald spots.i have thinning in other parts.i do not want to undergo one more transplant.any methods to camoflauge

Answer
You may not like this suggestion, but I'm going to offer my advice anyway. Shave your head. I understand this idea may seem ridiculous to you at first blush, because so many women derive much of their esteem from having a full head of hair. I also realize we are not accustomed to seeing women without hair, but I think many women look beautiful without hair. I worked for a woman who had alopecia totalus (she was completely bald). Nevertheless, she is a woman of uncommon character, beauty, intelligence, vision and compassion. She is the principal of gifted and talented elementary school in Denver. I have never worked for another person I admired more. To my knowledge she has never allowed her condition to define her, though I'm sure she has suffered from ridicule throughout her adult life from both the ignorant and the stupid. I acknowledge that it takes a lot of faith and inner strength to abandon what in so many ways marks your femininity, but I encourage you to try. Think of the many women who suffer hair loss because of chemotherapy during cancer treatment yet persevere in the face of such adversity. No, I don't have to walk in your shoes, so you may think my advice cavalier. I assure you I am not attempting to be so. I shaved my head years ago when it was not as common as it is now and I had to deal with a lot of heckling, but I'm happy with my choice. I wish you well!

i just cut all my hair off, and now im upset!?

Mia Drummo

Okay so im under going chemotherapy for lupus, and am losing my hair, so today my mom and i cut it realllly short, its like a guys cut, and its just super short. im very upset now and feeling depressed and ugly, as well to top everything off im on prednisone so im puffy and overweight. what can i do to help me feel better? :(

Answer
Chemotherapy and prednisone can deliver a one-two punch your self-esteem at a time when you're already feeling emotionally and physically exhausted, and losing your hair can just knock you down. The way you feel right now is exactly how so many others have felt. It's why organizations like Look Good, Feel Better were created to help rebuild the confidence of women undergoing chemo. I've pasted the link for them below for you to check out if you wish. They offer complimentary hair and makeup tutorials at locations across the country, and also have a lot of helpful tips and videos on their site.

I felt like a caricature of myself during my first couple of cycles of chemo when I was undergoing physical and mental changes, and frustrated and furious at what felt like a lack of control over my own life. Learning how to take control of what I could was really empowering. There are things that you can do, too. It might seem like a waste of time and money to see a hair stylist when your hair is falling out, but it might make you feel better. Also, there's a chance that you won't lose any more hair, so it would be a worthy investment. The "pixie" cut can be very fashionable with just a little styling. http://www.fabsugar.co.uk/Who-Had-Best-Pixie-Haircut-2010-12472909

You could also explore the possibility of getting a wig. There are organizations that donate them to women undergoing chemo, and some insurance providers will help to cover the cost of a wig if you choose to purchase one yourself. Ones made from real hair are considerably more expensive than the synthetic ones, but tend to be more attractive and comfortable.

This would be a wonderful time to splurge on some makeup. I rarely bothered with it before, but discovered that a bit of blush and lipgloss had the ability to perk up my appearance and mood when I was looking pale and feeling gloomy. I had a fantastic makeup artist at a MAC store teach me how to apply makeup that was flattering and enhanced my features, and hopefully someone will be able to help you as well. If the more expensive makeup is out of your budget at the moment, look on YouTube for tutorials where the "gurus" were using drugstore brands. One of my favorites is Panacea81, a gifted makeup artist who has struggled with a health problem called PCOS that also can cause weight gain and puffiness. http://www.youtube.com/user/panacea81
She has an amazing ability to transform her appearance with makeup, and is wonderful at teaching others how to as well.

You might want to ask your doctor about getting acupuncture to help alleviate some of the side effects with chemo. I'm extremely needle-phobic and was hesitant to give it a try, but it was so highly recommended to me that I decided to swallow my doubts and go for it. I was amazed. Many of the side effects of chemo that I'd experienced before like depression, irritability, insomnia, a poor appetite, and headaches began to vanish. It helped to restore my energy, which in turn enabled me to start exercising and dancing again and get the endorphins pumping through my body. I became myself again. One of my best friends had lupus and went through physical therapy to help him learn new methods for working out when he was in pain. PT is often covered by insurance as well.

Also talk to your doctor about getting a referral to a nutritionist who is trained in working with people who have lupus and are undergoing chemo. Your doctor can send him or her your medical file so the nutritionist can devise an eating plan tailor-made for you.

Start a new project that will allow you to shift your focus from how you look into something you're producing. The act of creating something like art or a photograph allows you to put your emotions to use, and it can be very healing. If you're not into painting or photography, then try something you do like. I'm helping my friend who just relapsed with a type of leukemia to redecorate her room, and it's been a fun and healthy diversion.

Find a reason to laugh every day. Watch videos on Funny or Die or read the Fail Blog, or just hang out with someone who lifts your spirits. Also have someone give a daily hug. It seems silly, but honestly, it does make you feel better.

Best wishes.

60th birthday gift for mom?

mjm13186

My mom's 60th birthday is in a few weeks. Since this is a milestone birthday, I want to give her something really special. My two main things are I want my gift to be "luxury" and "personalized" and I am not sure what to get. I just want it to be unique and special. Budget $500. Any suggestions from Yahoo!-land?

Answer
I recently got my mom a sheepskin rug for her 50th birthday. It meets all of your criteria - they are extremely luxurious, plush and unique. The gift was personal as well since she has arthritis in her knees and this gave her something soft to step onto for her first steps of the day (we placed it next to her bed).

I linked to the site I got hers from below. We got her the natural shaped double rug which seems to be the best one for putting alongside the bed. Obviously you'll need to pick one based on where it would be placed.

I hope this helps and good luck!

50th birthday?

anne b

What would be a good gift for a 50th birthday? I need nice gift ideas!!! (not gag gifts)
This gift is for my sister-in-law, who lives out of town.

Answer
You could go to the bank and get a brand new fifty dollar bill and put it in a card. Or get fifty new one dollar bills and put it in a drawstring bag.

Or you could get a really pretty container of some type (box, basket, even a gift sack) and put 50 snack size candy bars (her favorite type) inside.

Make a gift basket with pretty robe, scented candle, bath oil, soap and scrubbie, bath pillow, a box of chocolates and a good book - wrap the whole thing in tulle and tie with a beautiful bow.

Good/creative gifts for a 50th Birthday?

Trevor B

I need a VERY last minute gift for a 50th birthday party tonight. Anyone have any good ideas that I could pull together fast?

Answer
Buy here something online where you get to print off a voucher of gift card and some product information that you can format up nicely and hand to her. Things like an Amazon gift card on an experience day - something where the actual gift has to come later because you are letting her choose which book/music/experience she wants.

Needing good gift ideas for someone difficult to buy for...?

Lovin29

My mother-in-law-to-be is turning 60 this year. She is a lovely woman, very sweet and simple.

She doesn't have many interests outside of her family and teaching. She does sew, has a very nice sewing machine...but that's it really.

She doesn't like spa's, massages, has perfume, doesn't care for movies, politics, art, sports, antiques, collectibles, music, dogs, no hobbies other than sewing. She does love to scrapbook...but she's already scrap booked her children and grandchildren and herself...nothing left there to scrapbook.

Any ideas?
Well, a bed & breakfast is a sweet idea...and more of one for an anniversary (a couple's thing) and hiking is a great idea...if you are an outdoorsy person...she's not really.
Putting this one to a vote, thank you ladies!

Answer
While turning 60 is not considered a milestone like 80 have you thought about a night or two stay at a nice Bead and Breakfast?

We did this one year for my mother-in-law for Christmas and it was a wonderful gift for her and my father-in-law. They both enjoyed the stay and the memories they still have from it.

Seems as if she has everything she needs, give her some memories.

A lot of them might be offering some reasonable discounts right now with the economy like it is. Shop around and see.

We had the Bed and Breakfast send us pamphlets of area attractions/restaurants and we gift bagged them with the confirmation of their stay.

It was a nice gift.

Hey ladies, my mother is turning 60 this month..any ideas on a special gift?

AJM

I am having a little get together at my house for my mother and will have dinner, flowers and a nice cake for her, but want to make this special for her as this is a milestone. Any ideas on a keepsake of some kind? Something I could have engraved, maybe? Let me know cause I am not very creative but love creative stuff.

Would love some help!

Answer
A pair of Tahitian earrings would be appreciated because every woman ought to own at least one black pearl in her life.If not a Tahitian,a sweet water pearl is fine too.
Otherwise,a black pearl pendant would do.

special two year anniversary gift for boyfriend?

Believelen

Its mine and my boyfriends two year anniversary soon, and i want to do something really special or get him something special. He already has a necklace, bracelet and ring. Hes into rap, jets, eminem and the gym. any ideas? something romantic?

Answer
Your 2nd anniversary is celebrated on the traditional list with cotton http://www.anniversary-gifts-by-year.com/second-anniversary-gifts.html

so how about something in cotton to wear at the gym, not very romantic I know, sorry!

A more romantic cotton gift could be a love note written on cotton and sent out to sea as a message in a bottle.

Or the modern anniversary list is china, which could mean a romantic meal for two at a great local Chinese restaurant.

Happy 2nd Anniversary!

What does executives look for when employing assistants?

Dawson

I am a 38 y.o. man, 10-plus year lawyer with general office skills and I am focused on career change. I want to work as a bilingual executive assistant (a businessman, businesswoman or a group of executives.) I am openly gay but don't talk about it for a lifetime or hide it when asked about. Can it all influence badly in my recruitment and admission process? What does executives exactly look for when employing assistants? Thank you so much for your HR technical answer.

Answer
They look for efficiency and excellent organizational skills.

When I first had an assistant 24 years ago, I happened to have been assigned a 40+ year old woman that had been with the company 17 years.

I was 24 at the time, and a little embarrassed.

Naturally, I gravitated to the relatively brainless young cuties parading around Executive Row, but after about three months, you couldn't pry me away from the woman who scheduled me, apprised me of political concerns, educated me about company culture, researched things that I should have known about, and protected me when it was appropriate. Everybody - and this included the cuties - respected her. When she retired four years later, I was pleased to be the first signature on the company's departing gift -- a three week trip around Europe with her husband.

I've decided, and I pass the word on this -- that you definitely want someone mature to deal with the immature. So if you can do that as a teammate to the executive that you front, your political capital will rise. Your value -- and pay -- will rise as well.

American Women You've Got To Do Better *PLEASE READ EVERYTHING*?

Charity Va

I Really Would Like A Woman To Answer This Since I'm Talking To Women. And If This Doesn't Pertain To You, Then Don't Answer. That Being Said, Let's Get On With The Story/Question.So, I'm Having Some REALLY Bad Experiences With American Females In My Life. I'm 21 And My Brother Is 29. So Far He's Already Had 4 Bad Relationships. He's A Nice Guy And Everyone Knows "Nice Guys Finish Last" or Whatever That Bullshit Quote Says. He Had His First Girlfriend When He Was 16. He Was Making Money Then, So He'd Get Her Valentine's Day Presents, Birthday Presents, 1 Month Anniversary Presents, And 6 Month Anniversary Presents.(They Broke Up After 6 Months) The Thing That Disgusted Me Was, She Didn't Get Him Not 1 Thing. And She Didn't Think She Was Supposed To! I Asked Her Why She Didn't Get Him Anything, And She Said "Because I Didn't ASK Him To Give Me Presents." How Ungrateful. His Next Girlfriend Basically Did The Same Thing. He Was 17 At This Time, And They Broke Up After Two Months. Same Thing Happened, He Got Her EVERYTHING, She Got Him Nothing. When He Was 22 He Had Another Girlfriend. I Expected Because They Were Older That This Time His Girlfriend Would Do Something For Him...Same Thing....Just A Different Girl. They Stayed Together For 2 Years. He'd Get Her Presents...She'd Get Him Nothing. His Fourth Relationship Seemed Like It Was The One...He Was 24 And He'd Finished College And Became And Financial Executive. Her Name Was Desiree And He'd Do For Her...Then She'd Do For Him. But A Year Later...They Got Married And Things Changed. She Had Stop Buying Him Gifts, She Never Really Cooked Or Cleaned , She Started Spending His Money And Got Mad When He Confronted Her About It, He Was Telling My Mom That She Started Using Sex To Get What She Wanted, And She Would Argue With Him And Make Scenes In Public. One Time He Forgot To Give Her A Valentine's Day Present, And She Flipped! She Went Off! She Made Him Sleep On The Couch, And "No Sex" Was His Punishment. Despite All Of This He Still Stayed With Her. Eventually She Had A Child Whom Is Now 4 Years Old. When She Turned 4 They Divorced. She Got Custody Of My Niece, And Now My Brother Has To Child Support And Alimony(Whatever The Hell Alimony Is). He's 29 Now And Currently Decided To Date A Filipino Woman. I've Never Seen Him So Happy! She Treats Him Right, Goes The Extra Mile(Messages His Shoulder, Clips His Disgusting Toe Nails, etc.) But His Ex-Wife, Desiree, Still Gives Him Hell. And Just The Other Day He Was Complaining To Me About American Women...Then I Realized...He's Right. You Girls Aren't Submissive, You Don't Do What Wives Should Do (Cook,Clean), You Wanna Be BETTER Than Men, You Are Gold Diggers,You Are Spoiled, You Expect Men To Do For You While You Do Nothing For Them, You Love Drama, You Date Jerks On Purpose Just To Complain About Them, Then Make Comments Like "Men Are Useless Dogs"....I KNOW THIS DOESN'T APPLY TO ALL WOMEN...SO IF IT DOSEN'T...HOLD YOUR COOL...BUT IF IT DOES....PLEASE TELL ME WHY YOU ACT THIS WAY....???!!!!!
Ummm By The Way....I Said If This Doesn't Apply To You Don't Comment...So If You've Commented....It Must Apply To You :) Oh....And I Start Everything With Capital Letters Because I Want To...Ya Know.....Just Like Some Of You B*tches Do Whatever You Wanna Do.....Yeah! By The Way...I Am A Girl....What Dude Do You Know Has The Name Charity?

Answer
Wow, it sounds like those women were just taking your nice brother for granted because he was nice. That's how a lot of women are though. They don't like nice guys too much, and then complain once they get a 'bad boy'. It's good that he found someone different who treats him right. But it's good that you know that all American women aren't the same. And please don't have that type of attitude once you start dating women, because if you do then you're asking for failure. Don't let your brother's situations make you bitter.

Any gag gift ideas for a 65th birthday?

Mama of Tw

You guys have any good gag gift ideas for my father? Heâs turning 65 in a few days and me and my husband are going to buy him a bunch of silly useless things, like my husband picked up fishing line when he doesnât fish, we bought him a container of sardines, you know something silly so he looks at it and goes what am I going to do with this? We are going to try to hit up the dollar store soonâ¦any suggestions? He knows we donât have a lot of money and the idea is itâs the thought that counts. Its all in good fun! Thanks

Answer
instead of a birthday card, get him a 'happy retirement!' card =] and maybe you could get him some loungerie (sp?) or like a mesh thong haha. or something that would embarrass him like foot fungus cream or like a fake coupon for viagra or preparationH. be creative and i hope you come up with some good ideas! also, you could try a fake lottery ticket. maybe not, those are mean.....

What is an appropriate gift at a formal 65th birthday party?

yreviewer

My aunt is having a formal dinner party (think wedding reception at a big, fancy hall) to celebrate her 65th birthday. What kind of gift is expected at this? It's not like there's anything she needs (she already has everything) and I usually only give her a card, but she's shelling out big bucks for this party so it seems rude to show up empty-handed. What is appropriate in this situation?

Answer
Does she have a favorite picture from her past? If so I would have it framed for her. I also like the idea of the gift card to her favorite restaurant.

Is this valentines gift too expensive?

James D

I've been dating my current girlfriend for around 6 months. Valentines day is monday and I was thinking about getting her this. http://www.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=65686&cm_mmc=Shoplocal-_-catalogs-_-n-_-nadref=SLbuy

Do you guys think that is too expensive?

Answer
Yeah I guess so.. I mean it's only 6 months. Sometimes giving a girl something too expensive will give her a wrong impression. Even if she loves it, it's either she realizes how much you love her or she PROBABLY is materialistic.

expensive gift problems?

DiaBEEtus

my friend brought me a shirt for my birthday and it is pretty expensive for my age. she told me what she wants for her birthday but i dont have any money. and she really wants it. what should i get her? how can i tell her that i cant buy it? what else is a really good gift that dosnt cost alot?

Answer
a gift is a gift... you give from the heart and well, with the capacity to purchase ~ so if you can't afford it, get her something nice that you can afford that is completely personalized to your friend. you shouldn't have to explain that you didn't get her what she wants ~ whatever you DO give her, know that it was the best gift that you could possibly give her and if she doesn't appreciate it, that's her bad...

40th wedding anniversary gift?

rybo510

I checked answers and I am still not haveing much luck. Can you link me to a site that has a great gift BOTH my parents can share? Most of the gifts seem to be for the woman.

Answer
I am not sure if you are looking for a tradional gift or just an idea. The 40th year traditional gift is rubies. If that is out of your price range, why not a gift certifcate for a bed and breakfast or to a hotel in your downtown area.
A "coupon" book - one where you offer to do certian services for your parents like wash their car or pull their weeds is economical and practical.
A collage/scrapbook would be nice if you are talented in that area. You could try to get pictures and stories from their friends/family to add to the book.
You can get a garden stone/bench that has their names and anniversary dates - maybe Lillian Vernon has them.

Anniversary gift ideas?

ill_state0

My fiancee and I are celebrating our anniversary next month. And I have no idea on what to get her. I ruled out jewelry because she doesn't really wear necklaces or bracelets. And I just recently upgraded her engagement ring three weeks and already gave it to her, so I am totally stumped on what to get. Any Ideas ????????????

Answer
Hey congratulations on your anniversary! I just recently got engaged myself and it's been exciting!

You can never go wrong with this gift. I stumbled across these a while ago and they have worked wonders for me ever since.

The product is called a Ribbon Gift Album. There are like 15+ different ones from all price ranges so just pick whatever one works for your budget.

It works like this. You purchase a gift album online (you have to know someone to buy these because I think they are independent distributors for a company called Alticor or Quixtar or something)... I can give you the guys name that I buy them through... I'm sure he'd be happy to help you.

Anyways, you buy the gift album online... the album gets shipped to the address you want it to go to and then when the person gets the album, they get to pick out of a bunch of gifts within the album and they get the item shipped to their house for free.

It's awesome because you can't go wrong! There are like 20-30 things within the albums so they get a bunch of choices! I do this every year for my family's birthday.

Here's the website that I buy them through:
http://ehines1.ordermygift.com

An example of what I usually get my family/friends/coworkers is here:
http://ehines1.ordermygift.com/products/product.aspx?itemno=843710B7

Then click "View Gift Collection" to see everything within the catalog.

If you want his email address, email me and I'll give it to you. I don't feel comfortable giving out his email address without permission :)

Mine is: maxblondie85@yahoo.com

Oh, and the best part is that Alticor/Quixtar company is awesome with customer service... if you don't like any of their products you can return it (I'm not sure on the timeframe but my guess is 90 days) and they give you a return postage label so you don't even have to pay for shipping... it's sweet.

Well, hopefully this helped.

Answer
A nice idea for a fun and unusual anniversary gift is a Photo Collage Jigsaw Puzzle? I'm sure you have lots of photos so a personalized gift such a Photo Collage Puzzle is a great way to bring together those memories.

Check out this website below to get some ideas. Send a collection of your photos, 15-25 photos usually works best. You can also specify the words to a suitable song, poem or other words which will stand have meaning to them. Let the professional designers create a unique photo collage layout for your approval before making it into a puzzle. Don't worry, you get a chance to review and approve the photo collage design before they make a puzzle. Once completed, it can be framed and put on the wall as a keepsake of the anniversary.

making gifts for christmas?

psycholuv3

im running low on money this christmas so i was wondering what kind of things can i make, or what are some cheap gift items?

Answer
It's perfectly FINE to give a handmade Christmas gift!

Some things you can make (pretty inexpensively):

Scented candles

Hand-decorated Christmas ornaments

Baked goods (cookies, nut-bread, chocolate-peppermint rolls, etc.) that you can prepare ahead of time in quantity, and wrap and give individually

Small themed gift-baskets (for example, sample sizes of flavored coffee or tea, along with a nice mug, in a basket with some shredded-paper filler ... you can buy all these items at dollar stores or discount stores)

Other gift baskets, depending on the recipients likes/interests, could include a crossword-puzzle magazine and a few new pencils, or a few small kitchen gadgets/utensils and a package of recipe cards, some craft- or art-supplies.

Fruit baskets are easy (and cheap!) to put together yourself. Buy a bag of apples, a bag of oranges, any other fruit that's inexpensive ... some baskets (thrift-stores such as Goodwill often sell baskets for 25 or 50 cents!) and make your own!

Other ideas:

Cheap picture frames (again, dollar store) that you embellish/personalize ... you can use paint, glitter, buttons, decoupage ... the possibilities are endless.

Small photo albums ... include a few pictures of yourself and the friend to whom you're giving the album, leaving the rest of the pages blank ... again, you can embellish the album as mentioned above.

If you like to embroider or do cross-stitch, you can buy plain kitchen towels, potholders, etc., and personalize them that way.

If you knit, crochet, or sew ... scarves, hats, or household items are easy to make/personalize.

Just use your imagination. And don't feel like it's cheap to give a handmade gift, it isn't ... personally, I LOVE receiving a gift that someone put him/herself into!

No birthday gift = no christmas gift. Is it fair?

deetrosa

My boyfriend of 2 years did not get me a birthday present this year (it was in September). I asked for a horseback riding trip that ended for the year about a week after my birthday. He said he would take care of booking it....but just didn't. And I never got anything to replace it.

So I am not planning on getting him a christmas gift this year, even though he already said he got me one. I know it sounds petty, but I have no desire to be the bigger person; I want him to feel how I felt.

Curious to know what others would do in my position

Answer
Gift giving should never be a "tit-for-tat" thing. You give because you WANT to give.

But it is only a human thing to fall into doing so. I have had BF's who simply do not give gifts, and I have stopped giving them gifts. You are desiring revenge, and it is never a good motive, nor building block for a good relationship. If this is part of it, then my suggestion is to start considering getting rid of the jerk.

And in that case, NOT giving any gifts to him would be a normal part of a NON-relationship.

Have a polite day.

50th birthday idea??

Jane T

My mom is turning 50 in about a month and a half and my sister and I wanted to throw her a party (preferably one she doesn't know about). Most of our "birthday parties" end up all being the same- invite people over, talk, and eat. Since her 40th birthday was "Over the Hill" themed (and we're asking for no gifts), I was thinking it would be fun to have a game show theme. Has anyone seen the show "Amnesia" on NBC? I was thinking of doing that and having her answer questions about her life since people tend to relate getting older with losing memory... But the problem is that I don't really know how to go about doing it. I don't know what sort of questions to ask and how to make it last about a half hour to 45 minutes.
Does anyone have any ideas about how I could set up this game show idea and what sort of questions would be fun to ask? I want it to encompass her whole life history, but am having trouble figuring out exactly what to ask...
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!!

Answer
How about doing it with objects? Like ask relatives for help and take out certain jewelry and clothing and things and ask her when she work them, what occasion, why it meant something to her etc.

You can also do it with the pictures like the other poster mentioned, where it was taken, who is in it, where they are, what they are doing there etc.

Ask your dad and other relatives for answers to the questions so you have them before you ask her. Just make sure to ask a few members of your family the same question so you know you have the right answers, you may get more than one answer to a question, those are the ones you're better off skipping. Go with the ones you get definite answers on.

Talk to family members and friends of your parents and see what they tell you, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help you and reminince about old times!

You can ask questions like:
How did your dad propose? What was she wearing, what was he wearing? What music if any was playing in the background? What food did they order?

The day she went into labor, where was she? What was she doing? What was the doctor's name that delivered you? What is the hospital's name she gave birth in?

What was her high school football team's name?

What was the name of her first pet?
What was her first car? What color was it?
What was the name of the road she lived on as a child?
What color was her childhood house?
What is the birth sign and birthstones of her husband and children?
What was her freshman English teacher's name?
What color dress did she wear to her senior prom?
When she was little, what was her favorite thing to carry around?
Did she have an imaginary friend, if so, what was his/her name?
What was her best friend's name as a child?
Did she belong on any team sports growing up? What were their names and colors?
What kind of car did her first boyfriend drive and what color was it?
Where was her first sleepover?
Where was her first class trip to?
Where was her first family vacation to?
How many pets has she had over her lifetime?
What was her first job?
What was she doing when she met your dad?
How did she meet your dad?
What was the first meal she cooked your dad?
What was the first meal she ever cooked?

Being it's her 50th Birthday, do 50 Questions with Mom! And then have her start answering them.

I hope these questions help, your theme sounds awesome and it's going to be so much fun to learn all these things about your mom! I hope you have a great party!

50th birthday present ideas?!?

xxStarDoll

My mother turns 50 in Septmeber and I'm really struggling to think of good present ideas!
Ideally, my sister, my Dad, my boyfriend and I would all club together to get something decent but I have no ideas---I can't ask my Dad or sister because they haven't got any clue either, so I feel it's kinda up to me to think of something.
She loved Simply Red but they've split up so that's not an option-(I would have sent her to see them) and she's not into football, so a footie trip away is not an option.
She goes on holidays to Spain every year, sometimes twice, so I think sending her there wouldn't be very special-and I can't afford a trip to say, New York, or somewhere.
She is a lovely person who is not into material things, but I do want to get her a decent present for such a big birthday.

Our budget would be around â¬400-500 if we all clubbed together.
Any suggestions please? Greatly appreciated!

Answer
I totally agree with you that 50 is a milestone year and deserves a great gift! Your budget is pretty big so you can basically get her anything - an ipad or laptop or other tech gift is one idea, if she doesn't have them already. My daughter has the ipad2 and loves it and brings it everywhere.

If you want to get her jewelry, you could certainly get her one big item, or maybe matching pieces. Or, perhaps you can give her the jewelry in an armoire or other special box/holder.

Some ideas/suggestions - everything on these sites is completely handcrafted by artists and the quality is incredible. Most pieces are signed by the artist and some are numbered and it all can be shipped internationally:

This is truly special and has a matching bracelet - there is a tiny piece of paper where you can customize what you want to say and it slips into the silver envelope:

Good gift ideas for 20-somethings?

keyz

I have 4 daughters. All are in their 20s. Two are in college full time. One is teaching at university level, working to get her PhD. One works full time but not going to school right now.

I need some good gift ideas for young women in their 20s for Christmas. I usually give them some cash or gift cards but also like to buy them a small (inexpensive, usually under $50) gift that they would like but can't afford (last year for one of them it was a small bottle of their favorite perfume).

Since each of them doesn't make a lot of money right now, I like to give them something they ordinarily can't buy for themselves now...maybe some small luxury.

They all like to read. So are there any good book ideas that would interest someone in their 20s?

Any ideas?
Yes, I know them very well LOL. But I'm not their age and they don't live with me. I want to surprise them with something different and nice. I think if I heard different suggestions from people their age, I might be able to get a good feel for something nice and unexpected to get them.

Answer
A gift certificate for a massage or facial. Go to spafinder.com and purchase the gift certificate from there. Spa finder works with many spas throughout the country in all price ranges, they can pick any spa they would like and a few spas $50 will cover most of the massage.

Need suggestions for 30th Birthday Gift for woman??

My Maid of Honor is turning 30 in July. Any suggestions on gifts under $50? I'm really not a gift card kind of person but if it is the right one, I will do it.

She is a mother of two.

Answer
Buy her a gift visit to a day spa where she can get a facial and a massage and whatever other things they do for people at spas. If that costs more than $50, buy her a gift certificate for a massage at a ladies' spa.

German Shepherd Puppy - Are his back legs ok?

The Pitter

I purchased a 8 week old white German Shepherd puppy who is AKC Registered. The lady I bought him from only had him for 2 weeks before discovering she didn't have time for him. She bought him from the breeder.

Anyway, on to my question. I know German Shepherds are known for having hip problems later in life. My pup's back feet are turned out a bit, is this normal? Kind of like knock knee'd when looking at him from the back, minus the knee part. :-) He has an appointment at the vet next Tuesday for the shots he needs and an all over check up but I just wanted to see if I could get any answers now.

He is VERY active and seem's perfectly normal aside from being adorably clumsy (maybe that's normal at this age too).

Thanks!
Thank you to everyone for your answers.

Rsponding to King Les The Lofty comment, "I doubt that a pup sold at 6 weeks old went with a pedigree, let alone with registration papers."

I have papers. I'm planning on contacting the breeders this weekend and asking to meet with them. We'd like to see the parents and ask a few other questions.

Thanks again everyone!

Answer
Agreed that the previous owner should not have had the pup so young. The woman must have been a real ditz to last only 2 weeks!

I doubt that a pup sold at 6 weeks old went with a pedigree, let alone with registration papers. Without those you can have no idea whether your pup is from a "safe" lines or "risky" lines. So neutering is a "must". But there are both benefits & consequences possible, related to the age at which the pooch was neutered. Please study http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/Neutering_001198315291/ for the most up-to-date research on those side-effects, so that you can choose the age intelligently.

All medium & large breeds include genes for hip dysplasia in the breed's gene pool (it has been detected in prehistoric fossils of such as dinosaurs!)
But how common HD is in a particular kennel depends on the intelligence of the kennel's owner, particularly how he/she uses the xray evidence available. Although a veterinary university in Hamburg claimed at the end of March to have identified one the DNA sequences responsible for HD, for a while yet we will have to rely on xray schemes.

The last litter in which I produced a dysplastic was born in 1983 - and it wasn't my idea, it was a "surprise gift" from a pup allowed to run unsupervised with his on-heat dam because he was too small to reach her "target" and anyway he was too young to be fertile. Yeah, right.....

Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are the expression of RECESSIVE alleles, albeit modified by the environmental factors of diet & weight & fitness (or lack of) & type of activity.
A dog's OWN xray tells you only whether it personally displays the effects of HD (or ED). It tells you nothing about how many of the dysplasia recessives the pooch possesses, each blocked in that dog by its "good" dominant allele. Until DNA matching is available, breeders need to check the hips of the parents & siblings and grandparents of both the new stud & new brood they are considering using - and, if possible, uncles and aunts as well. After the stud has had several litters, a more reliable guide is a progeny analysis. Hence one of the reasons why having the "papers" is so important

Basically, now that you HAVE your pup it is too late to worry about HD or ED or Pano, unless you are prepared to return the pup to where you got it and start again, this time the right way.
If your pup is destined to develop a joint dysplasia it WILL develop it. But there are things you can do to minimise the speed & degree that it takes effect - and they are good things to do even if your pup isn't destined to develop a dysplasia.
(1) Keep it light in weight from now on. If your pup has the correct GSD coat, soon after 5 months old you should see every rib outlined by the muscles working over it while the dog gaits or pants, but never more than the edge of the last rib when it is rested - the GSD should be in the same condition as a human who is a champion marathon runner.
(2) Feed raw meat on small bones (skinned rabbits, chunks from lambs or young deer) - meat is the basic diet of carnivores; the gnawing exercises the cheek muscles that control their ears, clean the teeth, help dislodge the deciduous teeth, and help the permanent teeth break through the gums, and any bits that get digested contain the perfect calcium:phosphorus balance. Supplement that with cooked table scraps or dog bix a few times a week.
(3a) Allow the pup freedom to exercise whenever it wants - lying in a crate doesn't develop muscle (nor does it develop intelligence & self-confidence). When a pooch cannot have the run of the house it should be in a roofed escape-proof run outside where it can experience the sounds & smells & movements of the environment or snooze in a raised box or bounce from end to end of the run and go toilet whenever it wants to.
(3b) Avoid high impact exercise; avoid exhausting exercise - exhausting for the pup, not for you.
The condition of the muscles & ligaments is crucial - they have to be tight, to hold the bones in the correct relationship to each other so that the knobs and sockets and balls all work properly.

Ignore any "advice" to "prelim" your pup.
Less than 16% of HD is detected by xrays taken at or before 6 months old!
By 12-13 months old 70% gets detected, and only OFA deems that too young to certify; the rest of the world considers that if HD hasn't shown up by 12-13 months it is going to be very mild and not prevent dogs from having a normal life-span (the exception being the ones that REALLY work their joints hard for up to 14 hours a day).

Your pup probably has weak muscles - people who "get rid of" their pups at 6 weeks old are unlikely to have allowed them to run all around the section, developing muscles and awareness of the environment. It is also very likely to have stifles that are too long - that is a characteristic of NAmerican-bred GSDs. Either makes it hard for the muscles to control the hocks; both together are certain to produce "cow-hocks" aka "pin-hocks".

You cannot diagnose HD just by looking. My first bit.ch, back when my country still had no HD scheme, produced a very dysplastic pup, so our vet sent us to the veterinary university where the profs were testing out possible ways to diagnose HD. Our bit.ch flew through all the physical tests, and then came the xray - it revealed that she had almost no hip sockets. She was a VERY fit bit.ch, and that muscle fitness was keeping each femur head tightly aligned with the little socket she had left, even when waltzing on her hind legs with the prof.

As he is obviously NOT breeding stock, the only reason for xraying him is to confirm your suspicion that he has HD or ED, if that situation ever arises. Or, if you will be putting an expensive amount of time into training him for a specific task, xray at or after 12 months to see whether his joints look likely to give him 10+ years of working life. Otherwise, if you find out who his parents are and that they have KC registration, you might care to have him officially certificated to add to the knowledge about his parents' genes for dysplasia.

The proper place to ask questions about GSDs is in a couple of the 300+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of our breed. Each group's Home Page will have a "mission statement" telling you which aspects they want to talk about, and below that will be a Monthly Activity "calendar" so you can tell whether the group is "dead" or manageably active or so over-active that you couldn't cope with all that traffic.

What is the difference between ein and eine in German?

Corvin

Is it that ones masculine and feminine? If so, which is which?

Answer
-Ein is masculine (der Junge = the boy; ein Junge = a boy)
-Ein can also be neuter (das Geschenk = the gift; ein Geschenk = a gift)

-Eine is feminine (die Frau = the woman; eine Frau = a woman)

All of these examples are in a case we call Nominative (this means that "ein Junge," "ein Geschenk" and "eine Frau" are all the SUBJECTS of the sentence.)

When something is the subject, it performs the action:
--A boy ate the cake.
--A girl stole the bicycle.
--The woman told us to leave.
--Sarah is my sister.
--Katelyn and Jonathon are my friends.
--He sold the car.
--We gave him the money.
--They borrow my clothes all the time.

+Later in German, you'll learn about the Accusative case, Dative case, and (the awkward) Genitive case. In these other cases, the noun is not the subject (like above examples).
+In these cases, the "der, die, das, die" articles will change.
+Also, the "ein, eine, ein" articles will change, but not much.

Viel Glueck!

X-Mas Gift Ideas...Help!?

mrskatier

My friend is pregnant and due in June. They will not find out the sex of the baby until January so my question is:

Does anyone have any suggestions what to get them for Xmas that is not gender specific? I have not been pregnant before so I have *NO* idea. Besides the typical diapers, onesies, etc.

Thanks in advance!
I was going to get things for her and her hubby...but wanted to get something for the baby too. Nothing too extravagant or anything, because I will be getting her something at the baby shower (assuming she has one).

I just thought it was a nice gesture.

Answer
If shopping for the baby, gift cards are always a welcome treat. This way, it frees up money for the family come the birth-time, and allows something of proper gender to be purchased :)

Another good gift is something that can pamper mom a bit. Nice lotions, oils (check and see if she can handle scented things first though, some pregnant women can't). A nice pair of slippers, an extra large maternity robe that's nice and cozy . . .

If she's planning on nursing, Lansanoh or other lanolin ointments are handy, or nursing pads.

Or, if they need bigger items (crib, car seat, stroller, pack n play, swing) many of those come in gender neutral colors.

I personally would go with pampering items, as it's something that mom's get very little of once the baby comes. Maybe even a gift certificate for a spa day or massage, mani/pedi . . . fun girly things to celebrate the miracle of pregnancy!!

Y do people believe the virgin mary gave birth to jesus?

Ryan

Just. asking but if morher Mary. gave. birth. to jesus then how did she get pregnant because a woman cant get pregnant. without having. sexuall intercourse with a man

Answer
Because it is a fact, The virgin birth of Jesus Christ is a common emphasis during the Christmas season, but is it important? Why was it crucial that Mary be a virgin when Jesus was conceived and born? Why is it vital that Jesus did not have a biological father? Could Jesus have been God incarnate without the intervention of the Holy Spirit?

One reason for Jesus' virgin birth is that it identified Him as the Messiah. Isaiah 7:14 prophesied that a virgin would be with child. Ever since that prophecy, the Jews had looked for that particular sign. God uses miracles to validate His messengers. A virgin birth is a powerful validation.

Another reason for the virgin birth is that having a biological father would have annulled Jesusâ deity. He could not have been the son of Joseph and the Son of God at the same time. Every person born of man has inherited Adam's sin nature (Romans 5:12, 17, 19). It was only as God that Jesus could be the perfect sacrifice for sin, so it was the Holy Spirit who conceived Jesus (Luke 1:35).

The virgin birth is also a picture of our role in salvation: acceptance. Joseph had no part whatsoever in the conception of Jesus. Mary's role was passive; she merely accepted God's gift. As Ephesians 2:8-9 says, the work of salvation is done by God alone. Neither holiness nor salvation can be brought about by the effort of man.

There are some who do not believe in the virgin birth. Arianism teaches that the "virgin" of Isaiah 7:14 should read "young woman," and that at some point, God created Jesus. The Ebionites, an early Jewish Christian sect that closely followed Jewish law, taught that Jesus was Joseph's biological son and, because of Jesusâ righteousness, God chose Him to be a prophet and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. The Gnostics, who believed the physical and the divine could not co-exist, claimed that God could not inhabit a material body; therefore, Jesus only appeared to be human.

Those who reject the virgin birth also reject the deity of Jesus, the sin nature of man, and the inspiration of the Word of God. Therefore, a denial of the virgin birth is antithetical to the Christian faith. God is all-powerful. Jesus is God. The Bible is God's Word. These are key points in the Christian faith, and they make a virgin birth a very simple matter.
