My aunt is turning 60 this month and I want to gift her something special. Unfortunately, I can hardly afford anything expensive or unique with my salary being cut amidst economical crises. Can someone suggest an affordable gift idea thatâs also useful?

Answer
Let's face it at 60 you either have everything you want or can go get it so don't worry about the expensive stuff. Think about something that is special to you and her. Did you go places together or anything? Get something that would remind her of these times. Useful gifts, lighted magnifying glass to read by, LED flashlight that you shake to run so it doesn't need batteries, I don't know your budget but my aunt's favorite gift was the digital photo frame, they run around a hundred dollars but can be found cheaper. Another thing I did was go to the junk/resale shops, I found items that were big when she was little. Not all of this stuff is expensive so look around. It brought back memories when she was little and started a whole new set of family stories we hadn't heard. Good luck.

What can i give (gift) to an expecting lady on the day of the baby shower she is hosting?

uy

So what is a good gift to give to the soon-to-be mommy for her baby shower? She is having a girl so what is a good gift for the baby? Ofcourse, i want it to be reasonably priced (maybe 60 or less) since items for newborns can be quite expensive. So please share some gift ideas. Thanks!
Nope, she does not have a registry so i don't know what she would want/need.

Answer
It can be hard to find a gift with no registry for ideas. You can always put the money a gift card to Target or Babies R Us. That way if she doesn't get everything she may need at her shower, she'll have some money to get it with.

Having said that, if you really what to get her something, maybe go for a pack of diapers and wipes, rash cream, burp clothes, washcloths, an outfit, a baby first aid kit.

Or you can always find some thing nice for her. If you know her sizes, maybe a nice pajama set for after the baby, some fuzzy slippers, her fav perfume, etc.

Good luck and have fun shopping :)

What is a good valentines day gift for 200 dollas for a 14 year old girl?

Answer
that really depends on who you are. If you are a close relative, then a savings bond. If you are a friend, then 200 is way too much money for a valentine gift for a 14 year old

What percentage of the gifted amount is charged as gift tax (see details)?

John McLas

.....what I need somewhere that has a breakdown on how much gift tax I would need to pay for specific amounts so

$100,000 - ?% gift tax
$200,000 - ?% gift tax

I know all about the exemptions of gift tax but will exceed that amount considerably. I just need a vague idea of the amounts you pay?

Also am I still liable for gift tax If I live in the UK and am gifting someone in the US? We don't have gift tax here.

Answer
For 2010 and 2011 the gift tax rate is 35%. This tax is computed on form 709 and is paid by the person or persons making the gift. So the tax would be either $35,000 or $70,000.

Barry's 95% thought includes giving people that paid $0 in taxes a gift of $500 per person. Do you believe in transferring money to people who do not contribute?

Answer
Yeah, he thinks we should contribute more while the lazy people who haven't worked a day in their life should get a break, Obama sucks.

I won a $2,500 gift card for AAFES! How much will I have to pay in taxes at the end of the year?

shawn.kowa

I won a $2,500 gift card for AAFES! How much will I have to pay in taxes at the end of the year? My state of residence is FL (no state taxes). I am active duty military.
My taxable income will only be around 34,000 or so.

Answer
Assuming that you are single, the tax rate for taxable income exceeding $34,000 in 2010 is taxed at 25%. To be more clear, when you say that your taxable income will be around $34,000 have you already subtracted off your deductions (or the standard deduction of $5,700) and your personal exemption of $3,650.

I hope this helps.

Q. Next Monday, a group of women in my community are going to meet for lunch and to discuss projects we could do to help people. Do you have some ideas I could introduce?

Sometimes, I think organizations miss the mark because they do not really know what is most needed by people who could use some help. We are looking for the best ways to use our time, talents and energy to really help people. Your ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
A group I work with do a back to school thing where we gather up used and new clothing, wash, iron and fold them nicely, add notebooks, pens, pencils, back packs etc.
We do a Thanksgiving food basket thing where we fill 5 baskets with fixings for a meal
We do a CHristmas thing where we buy and wrap gifts appropriate for the ages of the children and also include a family gift.

We receive the stats for all these from a local social service agency. They do not give us the names of the families receiving the "gifts" just the ages and number of children. We give the gifts to the agency and they make the deliveries.

Has anyone received a really cool corporate gift lately? Or have any ideas for cool corporate gifts?

G

I'm trying to find some nice corporate gifts to express my companies appreciation to some individuals. I've already looked at Tiffany, Sharper Image, Bose, and Apple for stuff to present as ideas for what to get them. Does anyone have any other ideas? The price range for the gifts is around $200-$300.

Should public schools try to close the gap between mentally disabled kids instead of helping gifted kids more?

gifts for her from kids image

Uarba sp

Tell me whether you think schools should be trying to close the gap between mentally disabled kids and average kids, or should the schools be helping "gifted" kids to reach their maximum potential?
I know a kid that scored two 99's and two 98's on the Ravens test, yet is not allowed ANY advanced classes.
It's the 99th percentile. Meaning only 3 people in the school district got the same, and that's not gifted?

Answer
Mentally disabled kids aren't going to be able to be average kids, no matter how much money is thrown at them. It's impossible for them to ever be equal, hence the separate label or category.

What I would spend additional funds on is early intervention programs from birth and increasing the ability of social services to take over for inadequate parents - through the courts, if need be. For instance, I had one parent that refused preschool services for all six of her children. All were identified officially as special ed before Christmas break of their kindergarten year (very, very rare for one - let alon all of them). So all of her children were in self-contained classrooms for students with mild-disabilities with environment as the psychologist's main reason for the cause. Social services was not allowed to touch these kids because there was no abuse there - She was exercising her parental right! Now each of these receive a $450 or check each month for the rest of their lives plus health insurance and paid for job training/ adult care. Where would the money best be spent in this situation??

The federal government gives additional funds for these students, but it is often illmanaged at the local level. I've seen first hand things thrown out rather than transferred to another school. Thousands of dollars are also wasted because they think it looks like fun in a catalog and then never used. Teachers take materials when they transfer school districts because things aren't inventoried and secured.

Gifted kids have almost an unlimited potential. Allow them to grow as much as possible.

What is the name of that book about those kids and superpowers?

Navybrat

It is a teen read, and not too difficult. It is about a kid who gets in trouble at his school and is sent to a school for delinquents. This school then turns out to be a school more for gifted kids than for delinquents. He ends up befriending a kid who can find lost items because they whistle or something like that. The book also had a mysterious kid with pyrokinetic powers in it. I don't remember much else.

Answer
hidden talents by David Lubar.
there is also a sequel, " true talents."
Martin- main character
Lucky- kid who 'hears' lost stuff
Torchi- pyrokinetic
Cheater- mind reader
Flinch- sees the future( like 5 seconds)

What are good 'thank you' gifts for a baby shower?

gift for women over 65 image

NaeNae Jam

So my mom is throwing me a baby shower in a few months and I can't help but want everything just right. I am inviting about 65 people and need some good ideas for 'thank you' gifts to give everyone that comes. Candy is sweet, but . . . I want to put a little something more that really shows my appreciation! Any ideas?

Answer
wow, 65 guests! I don't even know 65 women i could invite to a shower lol!!

I am hosting my SIL's baby shower later this month for 30 odd guests and had made my own favours

I took one square sheet of scrapbooking paper and cut it into 4 squares. Each square is folded into a little rectangular parcel and the end taped up. I put one little chocolate frog into each parcel thru the still open end.
Then i made book marks on microsoft word and laminated them, that say

"This bookmark is given
to remember
Kelleyâs
new chapter in life"
[insert picture]
Thank you for sharing in this special day!
27 /09 /09

and also typed up this little phrase and printed it out and cut them out...

Thank you for your gift that we will soon see,
And thank you for your kindness and generosity!
Mum is sending this note of thanks because I am yet to arrive,
And even when I do, I wonât write good till Iâm five!

I then attached the book mark and thank you note to each side of the little parcel by punching a hole in the open end of the parcel and the top of the book mark and thank you phrase and used ribbon to secure it all together.

The end product looks really cute and 'classy' and appropriate for every woman. Plus its cheap to make but a bit time consuming but worth it. I like the hand made touch and think it brings something a little more special to the day.

You could also give each guest a fresh flower, like a gerbera, with a thank you note & wrapped chocolate attached to the stem with a ribbon as a gift as they leave. Plus they make great decorations during the shower, and are available in large quantities at a not too expensive price. Every woman likes flowers & chocolate!

I've also printed name tags that i will write on and pin on everyone as they arrive that say
"My name is ________
I am Kelley's ________" (mother, aunt, collegue, neighbour etc..)

this is so everyone knows who each other is especially when you have a large group. I think its a bit of an ice breaker.

I have also purchased 50 little plastic baby bootie charms off ebay and am using large baby nappy pins to secure one to each guest as they arrive. If they say 'baby' during the shower, they have to give a bootie pin to the person that caught them saying it. The person who has the most booties pinned on them at the end of the shower gets a prize!

hope that helps!

What should I get my mom and dad for Christmas?

Q. They are always doing so much for me so i want to get them a nice gift. So let me tell you about them. My mom loves to play piano, cook, run, and likes to look at the things in the coach store but never buys anything there. My dad likes the two and a half men show, to cook on the grill, and pretty much any sports show on tv. I know I asked this more than once but I need more ideas. Thanks in advance

How much time do you need between flights at London Heathrow Airport if you have to go from Terminal 3 to 4?

ClCtiC

My flight arrives to London Heathrow Airport at 10:05 Terminal 3 and the next flight departs at 14:25 from Terminal 4.

Do you think I will have enough time to check in and out between flights?

This is considering there will be no delay when arriving on the first flight.

Many thanks!
It is not a direct transfer. Two different couriers so Iâll have to check out first at #3 and then check in again #4.

Answer
With a flight arrival at 10:05, you'll probably get through to the arrivals area by 11:00 at the latest, depending on where you've travelled from and your citizenship. You can transfer to T4 via the Heathrow Express for free and this should take no longer than 30 mins (inc waiting time).
So you should have around 3 hours to check-in for your second flight, and grab a coffee & something to eat in the departures lounge of T4, there good shopping in T4 too, if you need any gifts or duty free.

How to stop giving gifts to friends?

birthday gifts for her kids
on Party Favor Ideas For Girl 4 Year Old Princess Puzzle
birthday gifts for her kids image

LoveLife

I have three close friends that I give birthday gifts to. I got married in 2006. They don't give gifts to my husband just me. I feel like they don't put effort into the gifts anymore and I put thought and money into them. How can I stop giving birthday gifts. We are hoping we will have a baby soon and would like to only give gifts to kids no adults anymore. How do you do it nicely?

Answer
I would talk to your friends about this. Just tell them that now that your family is getting bigger and that you and your husband are planning to start a family soon, you would prefer not to do "gifts" for friends b-days anymore. See how they feel about it. If they aren't putting much effort into the gifts anymore, they may agree. If they are totally against giving up this tradition, then you will need to decide how much this means to you and your friendships.

You could suggest that instead of gifts, that you just do dinner for each of your birthdays. I think it is very nice to take a friend out to dinner for their birthday rather than giving a gift. (This is what my friends do!)

I would not suggest that you would like to just give gifts to the kids unless your friends have kids as well. I know many single people miss out on getting gifts that others get (wedding gifts, kids gifts, shower gifts, etc) and they may feel that it is not fair that they still need to get a gift for your kid but you never need to get your single friend a gift anymore.

Another idea. If your friends atill want to give gifts for birthdays, I would just keep your gift giving simple and inexpensive. I usually keep track of what my friends have gotten me for my birthday to help me gauge how much to spend on them.

Good luck with this. I would bring it up casually and be open to suggestions from your friends as well!

Should you wrap a birthday gift in Christmas colored paper if the b-day is near Christmas?

I.I.

My friend's birthday was on the 20th. I'm mailing her a birthday gift which she'll receive a few days after Christmas.

Should I wrap it in Christmas color paper with Christmas designs even though it's not a Christmas gift, or wrap it like I normally would with different colored paper?

Also, should I send her a Christmas present?

Answer
As someone whose birthday is very near Christmas, I can say I hated it when people wrapped my gifts in Christmas paper! Half the time, I wouldn't know whether it was supposed to be for my birthday or Christmas. I'm older now, and don't mind it so much, but still prefer birthday paper.
If she buys you gifts for your birthday and Christmas, you must reciprocate. Don't think one gift covers both occasions, if you got two gifts (unless your gift to her is expensive).
We December babies like to have our birthdays treated as our own special day, as much as anybody! Not just lumped in with another holiday.
Having a birthday near Christmas pretty much sucks. You get half as much as you would have any other time of the year. Not that that is the point, of course (except when you're a kid). But still.

Should I give a congratulations gift to someone if they got a promotion due to the fact that the other person in that position died. It is a good thing the person got the promotion but horrible that the other person passed away. Just wondering what is proper in this situation?

Answer
It's still appropriate. The company could have done nothing and left the position vacant or hired someone from the outside to fill the position. The fact that they didn't do either of these means the promoted employee deserved the promotion.

I found an Aeropostale gift card I got for my birthday at the beginning of last year. It's for $20. If I used it in August, which I plan to, will it still be good?

Answer
The Aeropostale Gift Card never expires or charges fees. You should still have the $20 on the gift card.

One thing to note: sometimes companies give away gift cards for free during a promotion. There cards might expire.

I would call and check the balance.

How should I go about asking how I can help with a family going through a hard time?

gift for women going through chemo image

Power

I worked for a man who was very helpful to me at a time when I needed help. We have remained friends even though I haven't worked for him for years. He now has a brother who just lost his wife to cancer. The brother has a daughter that had cancer years ago & was doing well & now a month after her mother died she has found out she has inoperable cancer.

I am assuming this means she will go through chemo. I don't know but I know it has to be draining for the family grieving & now going through this. I want to help out. I can go over & help with her care or talk on the phone with anyone who wants to be uplifted cause I have been through a lot in my live.

How do I tell my friend that I can help out. I don't want to seem arrogant or like I am just saying I will help but really not do anything. I don't know if they have a lot of help because they are a large family. They may have a large church. There are about 30 miles away so they are not in my neighborhood.

How does one approach this. We want to help but have no clue as to how to really do that without interferring. What is the etiquette on this. Any ideas about how to act or what not to say or do would be helpful. Thank you.

Answer
What I would say would be this:

You have been there for everyone else and now we are going to be there for you. I know how difficult it is right now and you were there for me. This isn't a question. I'm telling you that I'm (we) are going to help. It would probably be best if you told me what the best way to do that would be.

You could then list the ways that you have already thought of and ask what they think.

Possibly a silent auction, where the proceeds go to the family. Typically, large hotel chains will 'gift' a ballroom or banquet rooms for charitable events like that (if it doesn't fall on a day/evening where they have something already booked). You (and or friends) can go around to various local businesses and ask if they would like to contribute to the silent auction, the proceeds going directly to this wonderful family. Maybe 10 free car details, 10 free cinema passes and snacks, a free health-club membership, 5 free doggie washes and a new leash, a 3-day cruise from a travel group, free dinner for 2 at local restaurants, free 12 week yoga or Pilates classes, a free 10-speed bike, free mani/pedi, free wash & blow-out, weekend pass for Disneyland, tickets to a live TV show with autographs of cast members, free helicopter lessons, free giant swag bag from beauty supply shop, free gift basket from Starbuck's with 10 free coffee card, gifts cards from local fast food places, etc. etc. The sky is the limit there. Obviously the local biz's would be promoted, (great way to advertise locally), it brings the community together, and it's a win-win.

Everything is donated and the adverts go up all over town (theirs as well as yours'). Everyone bids on the items and you can bring in thousands for this family who obviously are in desperate need of help. The family members can all participate and be included in asking for donated goods/services in the area.(and they'll feel closely involved, which is good). Party supply stores and florists would donate arrangements, balloons, etc. Even local bands will donate their services to a good cause. (in fact, many very large celebs will donate their time to similar events).

Holding local car washes, bake-sales, dog-washing days. Those can and will all bring in help (funds) for the family.

The above was arranged by the cast(s) of Bold & the Beautiful and the Young & the Restless for the family of a man that most had never met. He was the husband of a woman who was a teacher of one of the B&B cast members. She inquired why her child's teacher hadn't been to school and was informed about the fact that he was diagnosed with brain cancer; his wife was left with young children. Both casts showed up and were happy to be a part of this meet/greet for the benefit of this family. The silent auctions and various other events were also successful. So, I know that these events can and will be of great benefit.

And this wasn't a question. It was "this is what we're doing, period".

There are times where beating around the bush and tip-toeing around a tragedy just doesn't work. The situation may be bigger than they are. In those cases, it takes caring people to intervene and just DO vs. agonise over it. Don't worry about all of the little details and roadblocks because planning and organising events like above aren't easy. But by doing this you really will help them. It also brings in hundreds of locals who will be offering them help as well. (going to speak to the congregation of their church would be a great way to enlist help with this massive undertaking), so make sure to inquire about which church it is and when services are.

Be definitive and matter-of-fact. Say "you know that you wouldn't take no for an answer. You've helped others before and now we are helping you". I guarantee that many of the family members (although large) may be at a loss as to how to bring in needed funds, etc. This will be a way of bringing everyone together and really helping them.

Care basket for woman going through chemo?

Sunshine

My boyfriends mom is going through chemo currently. He is going home for Christmas and I would like to send a nice gift/care package. What kinds of things should I put in? Useful, cheerful, things to pass the time, things to help with the side effects...any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
A basic chemo basket might include:

-Unscented lotion. Chemo patient often suffer from dry skin. Make sure it's hypoallergenic.
-Lemon drops or sugarless gum. Chemo can affect the taste buds and lemon or gum can can cut "chemo mouth".
-Hats/scarves. Not all chemo regimens cause hair loss but many do. Most breast cancer regimens, for instance, result in total or near total hair loss.
-Hand sanitizer. Chemo affects the production of white blood cells so chemo patients have to be extra careful to stay germ-free.
-Travel tissues. Disappearing nose hairs result in a constantly dripping nose!
-A water bottle. Chemo patients need to drink a ton of water to stay hydrated.
-Crackers or other small travel snacks. Eating small amounts of food frequently can help ward off nausea.

You might want to give her a comfy blanket. Chemo is exhausting and as a chemo patient she may spend a lot of time crashed out on the couch. It's nice to have something to curl up in.

Books or audiobooks are also good. I'd keep it light, both in terms of subject matter and difficulty level. I'm a pretty voracious reader but since starting chemo I haven't been able to concentrate on anything too heavy. I loved Tina Fey's Bossypants.

a promotional code would be a coupon, etc. During the payment process it will have an area to put your gift card number. You probably haven't gone far enough into the process to see that part yet.

What's a truly great gift to get the woman who has everything?

CanadianGi

There's a woman who recently helped me out. Not that it matters, but she's very wealthy - has everything imaginable under the sun plus more - and wants for nothing! I want to give her a small something to show my appreciation & gratitude. (More than just a heart-felt thanks.) Any ideas?

Answer
You could write a song or poem. (or draw/paint/make someonething) Something "original" is always a unique gift. I really like homemade gifts. You know the person was thinking of you when they made it.

I've seen places online where they will convert your photo into a watercolor, charcoal painting, etc. That might be a cute idea if she has a special family member or pet in her life. I think she'd appreciate having a pretty picture like this.

Does she have a favorite food? you can usually find unique chocolate, jellies, sauces, pasta, cheese, wine, coffee, tea, candies, etc. online too. Something simple, but she'd know you put in a little effort to find it.

For a really simple gift- a nice picture frame or album is usually a good idea. If you buy a smaller frame, you can display a gift card inside for a small add-on gift.

Ok So im 27 weeks pregnant. And I called my nurse with some questions about some bleeding and she said she thinks my cervix might be opening and scheduled me to come in today instead of just checking at my normal appointment on Monday. What does it mean when my crevix is opening? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Can it harm the baby?

Answer
It is not good if it is opening up at 27 weeks, even though bed rest may help some talk to your doctor about actually sowing up your cervix so that it cannot open. This procedure saves many pregnant women from loosing there gift from god. (:

How did Canada support the war effort from the home front at WW2?

Salman

I need to know how people women, teens, children, government etc help with the WW2 war effort.

Answer
Government started Lend-Lease before the world knew what Lend-Lease was [we called ours "Mutual Aid"]. Among the things manufactured during WW2:

Of the 815,000 military vehicles of all types built in Canada, 168,000 were issued to Canadian forces. Thirty-eight percent of the total Canadian production went to the British.
Canadian Pacific Railway constructed 788 Valentine tanks in its Angus shop in Montreal; its engine was built by General Motors. 5,200 tanks had been built at C.P. Angus and Montreal Locomotive Company shops by the end of the war.
2,150 twenty-five pounder "Sexton" self-propelled guns were built by Montreal Locomotive Works.
11 billion dollars of munitions
1.7 million small arms
43,000 heavy guns
It delivered 16,418 aircraft to fill Allied orders, chiefly from Britain and the United States, but also for use by the RCAF and BCATP.
2 million tonnes of explosives
9,000 boats and ships
Radar sets and Electronics
Synthetic rubber
Uranium for the âManhattan Projectâ

The total value of Canadian war production was almost $10 billion - approximately $100 billion in todayâs dollars. After the war Canada forgave every Nation any and all debt owed to us for aid received. It lent money to Britain interest-free, gave it a gift of war supplies in January 1942 and then donated surplus production to Canadaâs allies through the Canadian Mutual Aid Board.

Some 57,000 individuals were employed in merchant shipbuilding and a further 27,000 worked in naval shipbuilding, which included building vessels like destroyers, frigates, corvettes, and minesweepers.

We hosted the British Commonwealth Air Training Prgram. At the conclusion of the war, over 167,000 students, including over 50,000 pilots, trained in Canada under the program from May 1940 to March 1945. While the majority of those who successfully completed the program went on to serve in the RAF, over half (72,835) of the 131,553 graduates were Canadians

By war's end, 1.1 million citizens would have served in military uniform, and Canada would possess the fourth-largest air force and third-largest naval surface fleet in the world.

How many gifted students commit suicide each year due to bullying?

gifts for her from kids image

Emily N.

I'm working on an essay for school. I'm trying to convince the reader that all schools need gifted programs. One of my points is that these programs could offer comfort to those who are bullied and harassed by their peers for being "over achievers","teachers pets", or "nerds". Often times, gifted students are bullied because their peers don't think they're cool enough, just because they'd rather have their nose stuck in a book than care about who said what on Facebook or who broke-up with who.

I've tried to research articles on bullying and suicide, but the ones I've found don't offer statistics for the gifted kids who commit suicide from bullying. The nerds, the geeks, you know? They have statistics for the total amount of teen suicides and the statistics for those suicides linked to bullying, and which ones were bullied for being fat/obese, ugly, having eating disorders, or for being homosexual or bisexual. But, what I want to know is, how many teens have killed themselves for what their peers say about being "nerds"?

Answer
Though the actual statistics are uncertain, you may wish to also include the need for support in your essay. Today there is a greater awareness of the prevalence of bullying. And there are a lot of resources available for victims. One such resource is the Boys Town National Hotline, available by phone, chat, or email at 1-800-448-3000 and www.yourlifeyourvoice.org. Whether or not the one being bullied is suicidal or not, the Hotline is there to support them. If anyone reading this struggles with bullying or suicidal thoughts, you are welcome to call the The Boys Town National Hotline for Support. Counselors are available, 24/7, by phone or through the website, www.yourlifeyourvoice.org.

How many supporters will tell their families they will be going to Mexico to give gifts & their kids will get no gifts for the kids in Mexico need gifts before your kids do ?

Answer
Most of the supporters are anchor babies or Dream Act candidates, so I doubt if many of them will dare to go to Mexico; they might not be able to sneak back over the border. The anchor babies of course can go and come at will, but they would rather stay here and expect the rest of us to put them before our children and ourselves.

A little basket full of different seeds for her to plant and grow. Maybe even a flower ready to be transfered into the ground. Or think of something else she likes when she can't garden. Cooking? Cleaning? Baking? Art? Possiblities are endless when it's the woman you've known since day one (:

What is the difference between Harry Potter and CS Lewis Narnia? Why is CS not bad?

I have never seen Harry Potter and I refuse to considering so many pasters and Christians have said not to. When I watch CS Lewis Narnia series with my son my husband gets upset and says I am being a hypocrit because in Narnia there is a witch who changes things and the boy gets changed into a dragon and so on.
Now I am beginning to doubt myself. Why is CS movies ok and Harry Potter is not?

Answer
take it from a gal of jewish AND catholic families. ive read all HP books more than once & own all the movies. i will also own the books. as to narnia...eventually will be the same thing. ive read all the books & watch every movie. i will eventually buy those to but im waitig for the boxset.

both were written by good people. both have the same good vs. evil theme. most of the things in harry potter....love/self sacrifice/friendship...are in the bible talked about by jesus himself. same goes for narnia.

pope john (the last pope that died now) loved harry potter. good enough for me. the pope thats up right now is an idiot...he isnt as good as the previous one..& no im not saying this just cuz of harry potter...

the only problem i see with your family & harry potter would depend on your son's age. i would show harry potter & the philosepher's (sorceror's in america) stone to an 11 year old kid...however i would NOT show harry potter & the prisoner of azkaban/goblet of fire/order of the phoenix/half blood prince/deathly hallows 1 & 2 (HP's 3 - 7 part 2 end) to that same child.

no there's no sex & very little language (the word damn & bch shows up once in the whole series) for 7 books & 8 movies....not bad at all, considering the stuff we get today in which every second word is f this & mother f that.

but anyway....the movies 3 onward to the end get a little darker & scarier for young children. you have a werewolf transformation thats very painful to a beloved character. also...the war gets thicker with each movie & you have some character death....read all the books with him right away if you'd like. reading with parents is different from an actual visualization of an otherwise scary movie scene.

also...the finale movie (deathly hallows 2) is very VERY sad. i cried at least 5 times....most of my fav characters died in the war's end....from a very special owl to some very special characters. in fact, i dont think i wil lbe able to watch DH-2 again cuz its so sad. bloody awesome yes! but sad for 3 reasons. besides its emotional toll, its also the end & also on a personal note, my grandmother died 2 months before this movie & cant see it. she was a big harry potter fan...that made me cry again....

anyway, its ok for a young man like 16 or so to watch...but not an 11 year old boy.

narnia, harry potter, lord of the rings are all excellent christian themes..written by good un-hypocritical down-to-earth christian people. (rowling herself was a single mom living on welfare i a trailer & this idea of harry potter came to her while on a train. it was a god given gift cuz look at how it all turned out? she was able to take care of herself with the money made AND her children.) besides that, all the actors in HP remained grounded. daniel radcliffe (harry potter) came from a good family who did not let the power/money/fame go to his head. emma watson (hermione granger) remained in the same school when she was younger & didnt switch to a dif one to leave al lher friends behind. she did not act "above them cuz she's famous now" like how some young actors/esses go. rupert grint (ron weasley) went into the ice cream truck business. tom felton (draco malfoy) has been a coutnry singer since he was a kid. they all handled the fame quite well cuz they came from good families that took care of them & had some religion of some sort in them.

narnia...isnt so graphic either visually or emotionally. its good for a younger generation yet in the same way we adults can still enjoy them (im almost 30...grew up with HP). lord of the rigns is mostly for adults. like harry potter it does have some scary scenes/themes in it. also the movies are a bit long for children. harry potter is a mix of the 2. starts at as a kiddie thing but gets a bit more adult with each movie.

as to sex....none of them go past kissing. also, if there is a young pair...it will suddenly be shown later that they got married somewhere in between so it does not promote unmarried sex either.

violence does exist in varying degrees in narnia/harry potter/lord of the rings though...but like the bible, its more a case of good vs evil & not a gang shoot out or a murder tv show that we see on tv...full of sex & bad language on top of it.

if you're looking to get away from things like that...narnia/harry potter/lord of the rings are the way to go.

just watch your son's age & match him up with the age of the kids in the harry potter movies.

In addition to a bonus, what would be a good gift to give our nanny from the baby?

newlywed

I have seen suggestions to give a hand-made gift from the child/children in addition to bonus at christmas, but our child will only be 6 months old at christmas time. Any suggestions?

Answer
If it was me, I would love a voucher for say the perfume I like, or Clarins/Clinique/Temple Spa facial products. You would need to know what type of product she uses if you went down this route, as it's a very personal choice. Or you could get a John Lewis or Boots voucher/gift card and mark on the card that it's for her to spend it on her favourite perfume/ skin care / make up etc.
That would be a real treat for me as I don't often spend money on myself.

What other thjings does she like? If she loves gardening/cooking/sewing/knitting etc why not get her a subscription to a magazine? Then the present goes on all year.

I just think that if you can identify something she enjoys doing that she might not choose to spend the money on for herself, it will be a really personal gift.

"Life is not an experience, life is a beautiful gift. Experience is a power that never runs out; however, it is challenges we witness or face to accommodate the wisdom and knowledge to live and understand life. But not experiencing, then life is as pointless as trying to grow a dead tree."

I made it up myself. So what do you think? What should I improve?

Answer
This saying is really kind of goofy. You could work on the dead tree and make it more alive. Its kind of like understanding the meaning of life when all you really are doing is accommodating wisdom. Huh??? Does anybody know what day it is??

How can I offer gift cards for major brands on my website?

Robsthings

When you go to Walgreens etc, there are a variety of gift cards available to applebees, the gap, etc. I've looked at a lot of pre-paid visa affiliate programs, but I would like to find an affiliate program that offers other gift cards, that I can offer to my customers. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi,

I have a lot of experience marketing small companies online (I have 3 companies). One of the best ways is to sign up at business directories and protals. These are basically listings of businesses (simliar to the phone book). The advantage is that these portals usually get a lot of traffic and they're ranked high on Google because of all the quality links they contain.

My favorite portal is called Directory Exclusive. I signed up a few weeks ago because they're giving a away a free business card holder when a person enter's their company info. I received it in the mail 3 days ago =)

I don't know if they still have that promotion, but you can try to get the free card holder here:

musicals are fine, as long as there's a story. Non-musicals are good too. We're getting a couple of tickets for my mom's 70th birthday. We could also get gift certificates to TKTS, but I assume you're probably missing out on the popular plays when you have to go through TKTS. Thanks.

Answer
My 86 year old mother just saw Billy Elliot. She said it was the best Broadway musical she ever saw, and she has seen a lot.

I need a creative way to present a pair of tickets to boston?
