Easy homemade gift ideas?

The Mrs.<3

Every year my family does a homemade gift swap. The men mostly do really nice things like shelves, benches, and other nice wooden things. The women tend to do things like quilts, or things involving sewing or knitting. I feel completely lost, I don't know how to sew or knit or build things. I need a simple gift to make that wont make me seem cheap or like I didn't put any effort into it. My family has always put a lot of effort into making really nice gifts for this swap. Any ideas that don't involve much skill but will still be a nice gift?

Answer
Do you cook or can? Homemade jellies and pickles are pretty easy, as are flavored oils and vinegars.
Here are two recipes that are really easy:
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art13940.asp
http://fireinmykitchen.blogspot.com/2007/05/pepper-sherry.html

As for other types of canning, try the recipes in the Ball Blue Book -- they're good, clearly explained and their methods result in safe products.

Which reminds me that I need to put up a couple of dozen pints of dilled green beans.

please suggest me some good gifts which can be given to boy from a girl?

pls let me know some good ideas then suggesting costly gifts like gold chain

Answer
GIFTS FOR MEN

Here are some gift ideas for those special men in your life!

Buying gifts for men is not nearly as complicated as it is for
women. Follow these rules and you should have no problems.

Rule #1: When in doubt - buy him a cordless drill. It does not
matter if he already has one. I have a friend who owns 17 and he
has yet to complain. As a man, you can never have too many
cordless drills. No one knows why.

Rule #2: If you cannot afford a cordless drill, buy him anything
with the word ratchet or socket in it. Men love saying those two
words. "Hey George, can I borrow your ratchet?" "OK. Bye-the-
way, are you through with my 3/8-inch socket yet?" Again, no one
knows why.

Rule #3: If you are really, really broke, buy him anything for
his car. A 99-cent ice scraper, a small bottle of deicer or
something to hang from his rear view mirror. Men love gifts for
their cars. No one knows why.

Rule #4: Do not buy men socks. Do not buy men ties. And never
buy men bathrobes. I was told that if God had wanted men to wear
bathrobes, he wouldn't have invented Jockey shorts.

Rule #5: You can buy men new remote controls to replace the ones
they have worn out. If you have a lot of money buy your man a
big- screen TV with the little picture in the corner. Watch him
go wild as he flips, and flips, and flips.

Rule #6: Do not buy a man any of those fancy liqueurs. If you
do, it will sit in a cupboard for 23 years. Real men drink
whiskey or beer.

Rule #7: Do not buy any man industrial-sized canisters of after-
shave or deodorant. I'm told they do not stink - they are earthy.

Rule #8: Buy men label makers. Almost as good as cordless
drills. Within a couple of weeks there will be labels absolutely
everywhere. "Socks. Shorts. Cups. Saucers. Door. Lock. Sink."
You get the idea. No one knows why.

Rule #9: Never buy a man anything that says "some assembly
required" on the box. It will ruin his Special Day and he will
always have parts left over.

Rule #10: Good places to shop for men include Northwest Iron
Works, Parr Lumber, Home Depot, John Deere, Valley RV Center, and
Les Schwab Tire. (NAPA Auto Parts and Sears Clearance Centers
are also excellent men's stores. It doesn't matter if he doesn't
know what it is. "From NAPA Auto, eh? Must be something I need.
Hey! Isn't this a starter for a '68 Ford Fairlane? Wow!
Thanks.")

Rule #11: Men enjoy danger. That's why they never cook - but
they will barbecue. Get him a monster barbecue with a 100-pound
propane tank. Tell him the gas line leaks. "Oh the thrill! The
challenge! Who wants a hamburger?"

Rule #12: Tickets to a football game are a smart gift. However,
he will not appreciate tickets to "A Retrospective of 19th
Century Quilts." everyone knows why.

Rule #13: Men love chainsaws. Never, ever, buy a man you love a
chainsaw. If you don't know why - please refer to Rule #8 and
what happens when he gets a label maker.

Rule #14: It's hard to beat a really good wheelbarrow or an
aluminum extension ladder. Never buy a real man a stepladder.
It must be an extension ladder. No one knows why.

Rule #15: Rope. Men love rope. It takes us back to our cowboy
origins, or at least The Boy Scouts. Nothing says love like a
hundred feet of 3/8" manila rope. No one knows why.

best friend birthday gift ideas?

Jessie<3

two of my friends have their birthdays coming up, and i dont know what to get them! ahhhh!! if you have any gift ideas, please please let me know asap! theyre both turning 16, neither are getting anything to do with a car/license, and i would like to spend no more than $25-30....

thank you so much!!
friend #1: she is a newer friend; i have know her for years but we just got close this past year. she likes all the things that an average teenage girl would. is OBSESSED with the High School musical movies as well as Harry Potter

friend #2: she has been one of my best friends FOREVER! this year she changed alot so i dont feel that i know her all that well. she likes girly things, like nailpolish (paints her nails every night- usually with a really cool design), im not really sure how she is with makeup, but she has extensions and dyes her hair alot (idk if that means anything). she kind of likes vintage, or things that are a bit daring and not everyone loves. i want to do something with pictures, but i have a total of three photos of us, so if you can think of something, that would be FABULOUS!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Answer
For friend #1, you could make like a basket or something with all the movies in it and then little themed things to go along with that movie. then, (i don't know if this is cheesy or not), you could make a little 'gift certificate' that says you will watch all the movies with her and have like a movie sleep over with her some day.

For friend #2, do you have any like movie stubs, or any memories and stuff from the things you've done with her? you could make a small memory type book, but I dont know how hard that will be with only 3 pictures. or else like I suggested for friend number 1, you could make a cool little basket for her with a bunch of girly stuff or a few different $5 gift cards for places. or maybe offer to spend the day with her doing something fun. OR since you said you didn't talk to her much, the two of you could go out to dinner (your treat) and catch up. something fun like that! :)

Good luck! Friends can be hard to buy for

Need ideas for a 30th birthday gift.?

Scarlett

She's my husbands best friends wife.
Stuck up is too harsh of a word. She can be fun, but I will say she's very "PROPER".
She prefers the finer things in life. We are a family on a tight budget.
I don't know what kind of party this is going to be yet.
HELP!

Answer
OK, I would NEVER buy a gift to try and 'keep up with the Jones'. I like my gifts to either say something about me, OR that will be totally different to anything else the person will receive. Money does NOT talk (IMHO). If it was ME, I would appeal to the 'fun' side of this woman. Give her 30 X 30 'useless items' (Because people dread turning 30)......
30 X Spent Matches,
30 X Grains of sand
30 X Used lottery tickets
30 X Take away menus
......you get the idea. It wont cost much...but, by the time you FIND 30 examples of 30 useless things, and wrap them up in lovely wrapping...no one will be in any doubt as to how much THOUGHT and TIME has been put into it - and it will be NOTING like ANYTHING she will have been given before!
The last thing people with money appreciate is an expensive gft -if they WANTED 'that' they will have already bought it themselves! Appeal to the PERSON, rather than the bank balance!
Always works for me, anyway!

What are unique gift ideas for boyfriends graduation?

xoxoamyxox

My sister is stuck on what to get her boyfriend for graduation... any ideas???
he spent like 150 on her

Answer
A unique graduation gift should be into the two of the following requirements : the graduate will only receive one of these unique graduation gifts and this unique graduation gift will be useful and practical in their new lifestyle. This way they will remember who gave them this unique graduation gift. Great suggestion for your sister are a set of plates, towels, spices, recipe books, a great cd, a framed picture of your sister and her boyfriend, or an alarm clock (for those early mornings). Your sister can always add her personal touch to make the gift looks perfect and unique. Good luck to your sister!

Is a Dr. Weil professional juicer an appropriate gift for a 9th wedding anniversary?

guyger1

I'm thinking of getting juicer for my wife for our 9th anniversary. we're trying to be more healthy and i thought this would be something the whole family could enjoy and see benefits from.

Answer
My personal belief is that stuff for the house should be bought regardless and should not be given as a gift, unless it is something unnecessary and she has specifically asked for it. I think that personal occasions should have a personal gift given. I am someone who will never ask for something personal and will be more practical and ask for an appliance for a gift just because I feel bad asking him to spend money on me, but he loves me enough to do it anyway. Even if someone is practical, they would enjoy something personal better, and you should buy the juicer anyway because, as you said, the family can enjoy it.

Get her something that SHE can enjoy, not the family.

9th Anniversary Gift Ideas for my husband?

Mami

We will have our 9th anniversary this coming november I need some good and creative ideas what I should get him?

Answer
Well traditionally pottery is given at the 9th anniversary - but I'm betting your hubbie wouldn't want a bowl.

Leather is the modern gift. Give him a leather jacket for winter. Or a new leather arm chair. If you're looking for smaller gifts, buy a good leather wallet or watch.

Funny Birthday Presents for a Woman turning 50?

KP8

What are some ideas for a funny gift to give a woman turning 50 years old? I know there are some good ideas out there!

Answer
I'm a-fixin' to turn 50 in August, and as much as I've tried to dissuade hubby, I can't get him to not prepare some 'event' with my family.
I hated turning 30 (asked fam to ignore me-they did) very happy
I turned 40 and was positive and had a nice dinner.
Now that I'm turning 50, I feel bummed again like before I turned 30.
So, all I can say is to consider the sensativities of the person, and if they're real outgoing and party-like, then bring it on!
If they are private, then please respect that and keep it low-key.
For my 40th, family & friends did this:
Deck of cards for 40 yr old
Walking stick that had a rear-view mirror attached
"over the hill" baseball cap
stuffed weiner dog that everyone signed
silly glasses for seeing
black icing on cake
candles that would not stop burning
false teeth
"horn" for helping to hear
Guide of Retirement Communities
Denture Cream, Suppositories, other type personal effects

Have fun!

70TH birthday party theme ideas?

NONILADY

I'm looking for a unique birthday party idea for my very spry father. All of his siblings live more than 6 states away and aren't in the best of health so this will be a party with children, grandchildren and friends. He has a great sense of humor and is very sentimental and I am looking for something that will be capstone of his wonderful life so far. Any help would be welcomed.

Answer
Someone else on y/a had the idea of giving her father a box of fun gag gifts because he had a great sense of humor and she wanted all the guests to laugh when he opened them...but she didn't know how to pull it off:

My suggestion was to print off this song by the legendary Julie Andrews (which was written for her 69th birthday) and pass it out to all the guests to sing to her father....and THEN he could open up the box of gag gifts and have it labeled "My New Favorite Things"....here are the lyrics>>>

One of the musical numbers she performed was 'My Favorite Things' from the legendary
movie 'Sound Of Music'.
Here are the lyrics she used:

(Sing It!) -
If you sing it, its especially hysterical!!!

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd
that lasted over four minutes and repeated encores.

Your theme for his party could be simply "My Favorite Things"....and make the party all about him and what fads or favorite things he took a liking to over the years--and you could throw in some new ones :D.

My Grandfather 70th birthday Ideas what to get also as a 2nd gift i'm doing a shrit ideas for a saying?

Sondra

ok I wanna get him something but haven't a clue.So any ideas??? I know he's retire milatry guy and works in his farm alot. Also I've got some left over iron on stuff from son party so I'm doing a picture on a shirt of him and my son. Which he loves. He took my son at his party away from the rest of the crowd and hide behide a tree and just played for a while. And my sister got some great pictures of the two of the together. My son is his only great grandson. And So I wanna put the picture on a shirt with some cute little saying. I know some will say he's never gonna wear the shirt or stupid answers like such. I don't care if he wears it or not its just something sweet I wanna do. Also we don't call him grandfather or grandpa. He is called Pappa Joe. Because grandparents spilt and remarried.

i'd like whatever the saying on the shirt be something cute not about his age though. Like world great

Answer
As far as a gift goes, what my Dad really enjoyed when he turned 80 was the gift we got him for just pennies! We got the microfilm copy of the newspaper from his hometown on the day he was born! We made copies and put the pages on butcher paper. He was fascinated to see what had been happening on the day he was born. How much houses were selling for, what stores were having sales, who died on that day and did he recognize the names, what the weather was like, etc. etc.
As far as the shirt goes, how about a picture of the two of them on the back, and one of just your son on the front. Underneath your son's picture put "I love my Pappa Joe!" I'll bet he DOES wear it!!

Can anybody send me Gifts using Amazon?

zee_potter

Can Anyone whom i know send me Gifts using Amazon that will be delivered to my House...?

And Can i shop online using someone else's Credit Card with card holder's permission?..

Reply Soon!

Answer
Yes in both cases.

Someone who wants to send you a gift from Amazon just needs to make the purchase on-line as usual and then have the items sent to your address.

If someone trusts you enough to give you his credit card, including name, number, security code and billing address (where CC bills are sent to), then you can use that card to make purchases.

By the way the better way to have someone give you an Amazon gift would be to have them send you an Amazon 'gift certificate'. They would prepay a specific amount and then a code will be sent to your email address. That code can then be used to make your purchase at Amazon.

Obama's sword for Pakistan - Americans gift or morality?

aslam09221

Do you think he can do what Bush could not ...

Catch Usama, conquer Afghanistan.

Destroy Iran, syria, Pakistan and other Islamic countries for the sake of Israel.

Answer
I'm not sure whether he can do it or not, although I think Bush's administration is more capable, regardless of what Bush is himself, so if Bush couldn't catch Osama, Obama won't be able to do it either.

Yes, he can destroy Iran and Syria, but not Pakistan. Even Bush is not that stupid to attack Pakistan. Pakistan has a population of 160 millions, and trust me, in case of an US invasion, Al-Qaeda, Taliban and Pakistani army would fight Americans side-by-side, and there is no way America could win. Pakistan is not Afghanistan wrecked by decades of war, and not Iraq weakened by 22 years of sanctions. If America loses Pakistan as their ally, it would ba the most stupid thing to do, as most of Muslim countries would turn against them. They would have a battlefield stretching from Kurdistan to Punjab, which would be impossible to conquer. USA would need tens of millions of soldiers and its economy would collapse, and you'd see USA poorer than Zimbabwe in just a decade of war like that.

And I doubt that EU would support such a war, and it could eventually lead to disassembling of the NATO.

That just puts a question mark over Obama's mental health and proves he is no better than Bush.

Small gift basket for visiting friend?

Amy Gwendo

My best guy friend is coming into town this Saturday, and I haven't seen him in a year. I wanted to make him a small gift basket, because I don't want him to have to lug around common things like shampoo, shaving creame, and conditioner - etc. What are some small little gifts that I can put in here? That would be a necessity. He's 19 & a guy, obviously.

Thanks so much! ;D

Answer
A comb or a brush. If he's not staying in a hotel, then he'll need a washcloth or a loofah and a towel. Some hotels provide shampoo and conditioner but not shaving cream, so that's a good one to put in. Maybe some aftershave. A toothbrush and some toothpaste. Maybe a guy's magazine, like Esquire, would be good.

Thoughts on a $50 Coach gift card for Kindergarten teacher?

Princess

Wanted to get my son's kindergarten teacher something for end of the year - she has been wonderful! I do know she has a Coach purse and thought she could put this towards something new. Thoughts? Other ideas? THANKS!!

Answer
A $50 gift card is fine and a nice gesture of appreciation. I would, however, make it for a different store than Coach. Let's face it teacher's salaries are known to be low and $50 does not go very far in a Coach store. The purse may have been a gift or a bit of a splurge.

If you know some of her other tastes - such as does she like Starbucks? Or perhaps a $50 card if you happen to know what salon she goes to, or perhaps a restaurant or a local mall.

Foreign father gifts US resident daughter $50,000.?

Gavin

A foreign father, who is not a US resident or citizen gifts daughter, who is US resident and her husband, who is American citizen, US$50,000. The father will transfer the money from another country to the daughter and husband's bank account in US. Does the daughter and the husband report this in their income tax and pay taxes on it?

Answer
If the gift is given after 1 January 2013, the exclusion amount is $14,000 for gifts from a parent to the parent's child. The rest is taxable, and the gift tax must be paid by the donor.

A parent's payment of tuition & school expenses for his/her child is not subject to gift taxes, but apparently the money is going directly to you.

Gift taxes are higher than income taxes, but gifts are not your taxable income and are not reported as income on your income tax return.

Birthday gift for 40 yo brother?

vanessa

My older brother is turning 40 soon. I need ideas for a gift, hopefully under $50, but if I love the idea I might go up to $100.
He is a computer engineer, so obviously loves his electronic gadgets but usually gets those things himself. He's married and has 2 daughters in grade school. For past Christmas holidays I have given him things like a scarf, itunes gift card, but I'd like to get him something cooler if I can. Can anyone help me?

Answer
Gift card to his favorite electronics store...ask his wife to covertly find out for you.

Gift for a 40th surprise birthday?

spintool

I've always been of firm belief that adults don't give other adults birthday presents, except maybe a joke gift. But the guy's wife (my wife's cousin) has made it known gifts are expected. I think its rude, and I refuse to attend unless we don't bring a gift. My wife is mad and wants to buy a real gift and go. What do people think?

Answer
Just buy a gift a go. If not for them, for your wife. If this is effecting your personal life, it's not worth it to keep fighting it. Your wife's happiness is way more important than your rude friend.

But for the record, I totally agree. I think it would be incredibly rude to expect someone to bring presents to a party for an adult.

However, on the other hand, it is a "milestone" party and perhaps they dont usually have birthday parties or require gifts at the party?
Just a thought.

Answer
$15 ipod gift card

I am doing a gift exchange for a woman I don't know. What can I get her? (under 25 dollars)?

doulamom

She likes "traveling, colorful socks, target, motherhood maternity, cookies, ebay, reading, cookbooks, paris" She doesn't like coffee, knicknacks and scented items. Can you help please? She is pregnant.

Answer
Gift cards are a lame cop out for a gift in a situation like this. Put some thought into it! Make her a "themed gift" For instance, she likes cookings & cook books. Get her an inexpensive cookie cookbook, some gourmet indgrediants, some nicer utensils, a cookie jar, over mits, an apron, anything to do with baking. You could get really creative and do a french baking gift. Go to places like harry & David, le gourmet chef, even target has some nice quality baking items. You can even make the box part of the gift- use a baking pan as the basket and uses that colored plastic wrap to keep it all together.

A christmas gift for a forty-one year old?

stingray15

A christmas gift for a forty-one year old women

P.S:somthing under twenty dollars

Answer
You can get her a nice assortment of aroma candles... They are very cheap and you can get a big gift basket set for 20 dollars and under. Not all women are into candles though but it's nice to light one up every now and then.. for a candle light dinner, while taking a relaxing bath, to make the kitchen smell nice etc.

Some female, Jamaican music artists?

**ME**

Okay..I'm around Jamaican dudes all day..so I know all about Movado, and Vybz, and the ones that sing about pu$$y and being a gangsta for life. I've come to realize that they are talking about each other, LOL!

Anyway...what about some female artists..not female rap artists but more like singers..about love etc.

I don't know if all Jamaican music is considered reggae, but I'm wanting to know about female Jamaican artists that sing with an R&B influence...

The only one that comes to mind is an artist named Alaine. Who else?

Answer
Most of the ones that come to mind are more hard and lyrically wicked than the men you mentioned. Tanya Stephens ("gangsta blues" and her recent "Rebelution" feature a harder and softer side to her personality, respectively), Ce'Cile and Lady Saw are alternately raw and soulful in their delivery. Love is always there, as Sizzla say. But, I would look at the Caribbean and Afrikan diasporas if you want R&B and Soul, in the best sense of those terms. I love Tchiya Amet, Mounia Sahara and Queen Ifrika as they have the artistic, and also deep Roots, credentials among the best. The amazing J.C Lodge and Carlene Davis are veterans who have mixed it up. You sound like you know what you're looking for and what most others overlook. Make up your mind to do it yourself, if your lifestyle isn't reflected in JA. It isn't for the faint of heart whether "Black Woman and Child," "Young, Black & Gifted" or just holding it down as the "Queen of the Minstrel" show that is the music business. It is about stamina. Does any one know of a good gift from Jamaica?

Jack F.

I am going to leave for Jamaica for one week next weekend and me and my gf are both pretty up set about it. I want to buy her a gift while I am down there, but I do not know what to get her. Does any one know of some thing to get her that she may like that is small, not food, and prefferably Jamaican. If you have never been there then your ideas would still be greatly appreciated!

Answer
go to one of their markets and get her one of the handcarvings of a man and a woman. Lots of vendors will sell them. They are very pretty. There is lots of stuff you can get her. If it makes you think of her, get it.
