about gift tax in india?

Q. Suppose i reciding in india receive a DD of 30,000us $ as a gift from a non-related person from singapore , for reasons of college fees .. how much would the gift tax would be ... and how can i reduce it ?

Answer
The gift received from non relative above Rs 50000 in aggregate is now taxable u/s 56(vi) of the I T Act. Read the following excerpt
(vi) where any sum of money, the aggregate value of which exceeds fifty thousand rupees, is received without consideration, by an individual or a Hindu undivided family, in any previous year from any person or persons on or after the 1st day of April, 2006, the whole of the aggregate value of such sum:

Provided that this clause shall not apply to any sum of money received

(a) from any relative; or

(b) on the occasion of the marriage of the individual; or

(c) under a will or by way of inheritance; or

(d) in contemplation of death of the payer; or

(e) from any local authority as defined in the Explanation to clause (20) of section 10; or

(f) from any fund or foundation or university or other educational institution or hospital or other medical institution or any trust or institution referred to in clause (23C) of section 10; or

(g) from any trust or institution registered under section 12AA

It means that the person who receives gift above Rs 50,000 in aggreagte in a year shall be taxed on the amount of gift..

Since the value of 30000 US $ is more than 50000 and that too from non relative, it is taxable

Would you add "No gift necessary" on high school graduation announcements?

Mary Ellen

There are some people who you send announcements to that it's OK if they send a gift (like close family), but there are others that we'd just like to send one to but don't want them to feel obligated to send a gift or think that's the reason we're sending the announcement. If you mention "No gift necessary" does it make them assume that you're thinking of gifts?

This might not really fit in the Financial Aid category, but having a senior in high school I've done my share of researching financial aid lately so I thought this would be a good audience to answer my question.

Answer
I personally wouldn't mention anything about a gift. Most people understand that announcements are sent out just to share the joy to everybody else (just like when baby announcements are sent out) but it doesn't mean hey send gifts please. When those announcements are sent out you'll have some people who will go buy a gift (no matter what you put on that announcement) just because there excited and proud. At the same time you'll have others who may send a card saying congratulations but probably nothing else and some may not even do that.

I just don't think most people would assume oh gotta send a gift just because they received an announcement. And if your really worried than add on the announcements 'just to let you know' or something similar or stick a small note in it saying that as well but I would never mention the word gift. I am really strongly against using the word gift on anything because I feel like it makes people sound greedy (even if they are saying don't send a gift) because then its like oh I was expected to send a gift and that person may never have wanted to. A gift is a gift and should never be expected so refraining from using the word at all allows those people to make their own choices on it.

high school graduation gifts for guys?

Dontspeakl

I was invited to a lot of parties for my friends who are graduating this year. I was invited to this guys who I kinds know a little. Like towards the end of the school year we started talking a lot, but its not like we have hung out outside of school or anything. I have a tiny stupid little crush on him. I want to give him something good for graduation. BUT I dont have a whole lot of money and I dont want it to seem like I tried too hard. -he runs track, hes going to duquesne, and he used to live in Pittsburgh pa and has like tons of pride in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
you don't have to get him anything. he's not your boyfriend, and you guys just started talking. If you graduated from high school and he got invited to your party, he probably wouldnt buy you anything b/c you aren't together and you don't have a tight friendship. But if you absolutely have to get him something, get him a gift card to like walmart or target, no more than $20. that will help him get some stuff for school, and you won't lose out on any real $ or time if he doesn't talk to you anymore after he goes to college.

Wedding gifts $50 and under?

~xOx~ pRin

We only have today to buy the gift at the mall.
My friend and I are going to a wedding. It's the wedding of our Admissions Officer. We are still in college and pretty poor. So we are buying a gift together on a $50 budget. Any ideas?

Answer
Wow, did you get some good answers!

People understand that you are students on a budget. I'm sure they will appreciate whatever you give them. I would also assume that you would not be extremely close with this person (however I could be wrong).

Gift cards or plain old money is always a safe bet (unless your/ their culture has some sort of 'tradition' rule regarding not giving cash as a gift;I have heard of that believe it or not).

Cash is great because it is always appreciated and easily used for whatever the couple needs.

I also really like the serving platter or towels idea. If you get them in plain white, they should match any decor. And I know that I can always use another really nice platter or towel set for company!

Generally, avoid photo albums, wine glasses, etc. Couples often already have loads of these items, and guests often will give them multiples on top of that. We still have 2 sets of glasses still in boxes in our basement because we have nowhere else to put them in our kitchen! Unless you know they need them, avoid the 'mistakenly classic' wedding gifts!

Have fun!

Good gifts for mothers day? Under 50$. ?

Will

Hi. I need some good gifts or a gift that are 50$ or under. She is an interior designer, loves daisies and pink. I would prefer to buy from eBay or amazon. Thanks!

Answer
The best gift i ever gave my mother was a lovely crystal dinner bell and a redeemable coupon book I made up for her. The coupons were: Breakfast in bed, homemade soup and salad lunch or dinner, a homemade cake, super cleaning of my room, super cleaning of the bathroom, a vacuum of the living room, etc. She was told to ring the bell and redeem the coupon. She also used it to call us for dinner. It was a beautiful bell etched glass and remembered fondly over the years.

Valentine's Day...Gift or Date?

IMO

Answer
All depends on ages, and strength of relationships, right?

Valentine's Day is also for marrieds and those in committed relationships. In those cases, both gift and night out to special ocasion.

If you are trying to make a new connection, and ask someone to be your "Valentine", then, just a card will do, to show interest.

Gifts are for those you have known a long time.
Dates are for those who are developing a stronger commitment, it seems.

For those under age 16, I do not think a gift is appropriate. A Val Card, is great!

But two "friends" can certainly meet in some dating activity like going to a Val Party, or movie together

The point IS, for lovers, or protential lovers to spend quality time together on Feb. 14, not to turn it into another commericalize day, similar to Christmas or Halloween, IMO.

Christian/Jewish/Islamic Women: Our Religions are all Patriarchal, no serious leadership rols for women do you

Marvelissa

feel that Women's Rights are something that each and every woman all over the world deserve and have a right to?

Also, would you be willing to lobby for a protect Women's Rights?

I ask this of all three groups, because the fundamental practice of any of these religions are Patriarchal and I think when put into practice fundamentally can be dangerous for women on so many levels.

Your thoughts? (men are welcome to answer too)
please excuse the typos - I was typing too quickly on a dinosaur of a computer.
LOL - Deke, yes, although I fear I may be publicly stoned for saying this, I think the evidence of Dinosaurs is just too much to ignore. I'm a Christian, I'm not ignorant. Silly boy.
Shpicey - thank you for articulating what the questions behind my question are.

And to Pastor Art - I HAVE read Job. I've read all of the books of the Bible - most more than 2 or 3 times. I simply don't pretent to interpret them with 100% certainty in an effort to keep myself superior to anyone else.
I am totally wearing pearls and gold to church on Sunday. Heck, I may even braid my hair!
Aliya - I'm with you - I don't care for the sexual objectification of women either. That's not what I'm going for. I'm speaking more of the "submission" issues.

Answer
Thank-you for your question. Even though I wouldn't be able to agree with women of other faiths on certain issues, I would be able to agree on this one. I would feel so much better about certain religions or groups (including my own) if I could see more deserving women allowed to use their God-given gifts.

If anyone has been given a special ability by God, isn't it a sign that it should be put to good use? Wouldn't it be an affront to God not to? Is it not a significant stumbling block to the person with the abilities to exclude them based on our backward fear-based cultural biases?

edit. There is progress being made, however, often the discrimination is a financial one. Women can volunteer...donating their gifts on a part time basis, much to the detriment of their need for rest and recreation and time with families. What kind of equality is that?

Do Jewish women in Israel have to cover their hair or wear wigs and are there stores in Israel for women only?

bulldog br

Answer
The is no law in Israel that suggests that a woman has to cover her hair. The far majority of Israeli women don't: The only women who cover their hair in Israel are Muslim women and ultra-Orthodox Jewish women, and of course Catholic Nuns. There is an ultra-Orthodox custom for a woman not to show her real hair, in which case they wear wigs; however, it's a custom for them and it's not applicable to most other women. I will say that certain neighborhoods and towns in Israel do expect a woman not to reveal her hair. These include the really ultra-Orthodox ones like the town of Bnei Barak or the neighborhood of Mea Shearim, or the more Islamic ones like Um al-Falm and many others.

There are stores in Israel that are for women. However, I am unaware if there is a store that a man can't enter. A store for women to me means a store that sells things that typically only women would wear or use; however, that doesn't mean that they exclude men from entering and buying the product for the woman. Basically, a guy going into Victoria's Secret to buy his girlfriend a gift. I have never encountered a store in Israel that forbids men from entering, even if it's designed for women only. Ones in more religious neighborhoods might forbid men, but I do stress that they are rare.

So, basically, note that most women in Israel don't wear wigs or cover their hair, and that most stores, if not all, are open to male customers even if they sell female products.

Mum's 60th birthday gift trouble...HELP!?

akashacora

It's my mum's birthday on tuesday and I will get something for her tomorrow. I need to come up with something creative. It doesn't have to be something I'll buy. If you have any idea how I would surprise her by doing crafts (but not something cheap looking because she's turning 60). It's a special birthday and I'm not thinking of clothing. She's a fancy woman. She wouldn't want a book and recalling, she's turning 60. PS. I'm 16, don't have a credit card and live in Turkey so I'd love it if you could help me out!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WITH CHERRY ON TOP.
Thanks!

Answer

This friend lives in Paris and I am in australia and we have not seen each other for 40 years, but email often. We are both women.I sent her a present,a card and a phone call! What can I do for the actual day that would be special?

Answer
That is too funny about the early birthday. That is very classy of you to send anything in the first place.

I agree with the other guy, if you can afford it, go visit her. Or send her an open ended ticket to come see you when she can. You will hit her birthday gift out of the park!!! (Good thing)

Another great idea, Put together a variety basket of your favorite foods, coffee, and bevys from australia and send with a note saying, I wish you were here so we could celebrate this day together, so here's a little taste of my home to enjoy on your birthday. It's classy, creative and you will save a ton on the gift by not ordering a premade one and doing it yourself. Good luck, I'm sure you will make her day very special. After all, what are friends for???

any ideas and URL's would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Just buy any type of jewel...girls go crazy for expensive gifts

Re-gifting an exes jewelry. Why is it weird?

Mike A

Alright, so I have been single for a while now. Years, in fact. I have friends who have kids, and I have been single longer than those kids have existed. (it's by choice).

By this point, my ex has been long gone. I've given Back or gotten rid of every reminder of her, and often go weeks or months without even thinking about her. When I do, it's because someone else has mentioned her. That should demonstrate how over her I am. Like, I've forgotten her name a few times.

So there's this jewelry. Beautiful moonstone, with silver detail. Let's just say that its construction is something sacred to my faith, though its not a religious symbol. Hard to explain... I bought this jewelry from a jeweler, who made the pieces (necklace and two matching earrings) from hand and they are gorgeous. They probably wouldnt be valuable enough to sell, and I'd never want to see them go to scrap or into the trash. So I've tried to give them away. Never to a girl I was dating. But just to friends. I've had several girls interested, and are excited at the thought of them, even mentioning that they have outfits it would go great with. Then they ask me where I got the jewelry. I'm not gonna lie, so I tell them. Then they get almost offended. Suddenly this jewelry gains a "white elephant" status. They always give me a polite but firm, if not curt apology, put the jewelry back in it's box and hand it back.

One friend actually suggested I just toss them, but we've already covered that. They are beautiful, and I bought them. She wore them like once, then forgot about them.

So, my question to you, the answerer: what's going on here, in these girls minds. Why don't they want this obviously pre owned jewelry? Why is 'who owned it before' so important? Should I just lie about where it came from?

10 points if I can tell that you read my question, and have presented the best info/insight.

Answer
I know you mean offering the jewelry as a compliment or acknowledgement of friendship, but you may inadvertently be insulting your friends. To many women, a gift matters because you like her enough to want to do something nice for her. Giving away something you don't want any more, no matter how beautiful or valuable it is, is something good for you, not for her. It lacks the unselfish element that usually accompanies a gift.

You might have better luck if you approach the situation as what it is, her doing you a favor. Explain that you bought the jewelry for someone who is no longer in your life and that it's going to waste sitting in the box. Tell her you'd like for it to be worn and appreciated and ask if she'd do you the favor of giving it a good home. Once you frame it that way, the gift should be more acceptable.

Answer
Do a gift basket. It's fun. Get a idea like teas, coffees cookies books, something that goes together and put it in a basket. Then use netting or clear wrap put it around the basket and pull it to the top. Put a big Christmas bow around it. Or you can do a popcorn basket. Bowls popcorn balls a box of micro popcorn, two tickets to a movie or DVD. Have fun & have a nice holiday.

making gifts for christmas?

psycholuv3

im running low on money this christmas so i was wondering what kind of things can i make, or what are some cheap gift items?

Answer
It's perfectly FINE to give a handmade Christmas gift!

Some things you can make (pretty inexpensively):

Scented candles

Hand-decorated Christmas ornaments

Baked goods (cookies, nut-bread, chocolate-peppermint rolls, etc.) that you can prepare ahead of time in quantity, and wrap and give individually

Small themed gift-baskets (for example, sample sizes of flavored coffee or tea, along with a nice mug, in a basket with some shredded-paper filler ... you can buy all these items at dollar stores or discount stores)

Other gift baskets, depending on the recipients likes/interests, could include a crossword-puzzle magazine and a few new pencils, or a few small kitchen gadgets/utensils and a package of recipe cards, some craft- or art-supplies.

Fruit baskets are easy (and cheap!) to put together yourself. Buy a bag of apples, a bag of oranges, any other fruit that's inexpensive ... some baskets (thrift-stores such as Goodwill often sell baskets for 25 or 50 cents!) and make your own!

Other ideas:

Cheap picture frames (again, dollar store) that you embellish/personalize ... you can use paint, glitter, buttons, decoupage ... the possibilities are endless.

Small photo albums ... include a few pictures of yourself and the friend to whom you're giving the album, leaving the rest of the pages blank ... again, you can embellish the album as mentioned above.

If you like to embroider or do cross-stitch, you can buy plain kitchen towels, potholders, etc., and personalize them that way.

If you knit, crochet, or sew ... scarves, hats, or household items are easy to make/personalize.

Just use your imagination. And don't feel like it's cheap to give a handmade gift, it isn't ... personally, I LOVE receiving a gift that someone put him/herself into!

Gift for 40th bday party at woman's house?

seven

How much would you spend for a gift?
Not very close. Is anything less than $50 gift card too little?

Answer
No - that is not too little - it is too much if you ask me! Adults usually don't expect gifts from the friends invited to help them celebrate. If you wanted to take flowers or some nice chocolates as a kind gesture on her b-day that's great but it really is not necessary.

Having said that - maybe you could ask someone else going to the party if they are bringing a gift (and use that as a guide) if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Fashion question for stylish women 40+ (or their daughters)?

BB

My mom is a really amazing woman, but she wears mom jeans! I've tried to loan her some of mine, but they look a little too trendy, not to mention they're too long for her.

So, if any of you stylish women can give me some brands or styles of flattering, classic, non-trendy jeans, I would appreciate it! I'd like to get her some for her birthday, so be as specific as possible.

Answer
I think I know what you mean by mom jeans: high waisted, tapered leg jeans? Makes you look like your all butt and shaped like an apple on a stick?
Look for styles that are mid or lower rise on the waist (not too low, yuk), and boot cut or slightly flare. Being a mom, 40+, I like stretch denim. Old Navy and Levi make stretch denim that looks like the real thing. It gives you a snug look, but you still get the comfort. My favorite pair came from Old Navy, and I can wear them with everything, and my teenaged daughter is not embarrased by the way I'm dressed. I also have capris in the same lower waisted, stretch style, and one of teens at church came up and said "I love your capris, I have the exact same ones." High praise coming from a 17 yr old.
You may have to give your mom a gift card and then go shopping with her so she can try them on. Make a day of it, you know, shopping, then lunch or something: she'll love it.
Good luck

ANY ideas would be GREAT!!!
thanks again!!

Answer
Nephew,

The one thing going for most woman is this ; we are very sentimental and gush with pride with our grandchildren pictures and can't wait to show them to anyone and everyone.

What I was given for my birthday last week was a Memory of the Heart Book and it was filled with all my children's pictures and my 12 grandchildren they got those things that are like clouds with the point that you can write funny things with some of the pictures and it was a blast.
You see with this gift it will last for ever and every time she wants to show visitors and probably bring it to work she will say " Is this the nicest gift that my thoughtful nephew got me for my birthday" and your name and how great you are will go on for years until finally she has exhausted the entire town and they all know you gave her that book years ago and now you have children and grandchildren.
This Book can be bought at Kohls or Target and there are times and around this time is a great time. they are fantastic looking and there are times they have them buy one get one free and that's what I did and got and paid for two and got two free for my grandchildren and me.
The varieties are unbelievable and it gets a 10 for all they show and the prices are great.
Hope I have given you a decent choice, and remember how she'll brag on you.
Simply shy

all the gifts from god.?

emmy.

what is the nine gifts from god?

Answer
Gift of...
1. wisdom
2. knowledge,
3. faith
4. healing
5. miracles
6. prophecy
7. discernment
8. speaking in tongue
9. interpretation of tongue

1 Corinthians 12:8-10
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

Although 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 only list nine gifts, please know that there are more than nine gifts. The list of nine gifts is only a suggestive list. As seen in the Old Testament with Joseph, he had the gift of dream interpretation (this gift still exists today). In 1 Peter 4:9-10, hospitality is also described as a gift from God. Even with the gift of healing, it can be divided into three gifts - spiritual healing, emotional healing, and physical healing. Compassion can also be a gift (today, on 700 Club interactive, a person was commenting on how the caller has the gift of compassion).

Engagement party gift?

My husband and I are invited to an engagement party. It's one my husbands frenz. What's a good gift idea? Oh and do u buy an engagment gift and a wedding gift?

Answer
Engagement party = Gift
Wedding = Gift.

See if they are registered and buy an engagement gift from there. Or I would give them a gift certificate to a store they can use. If they have a home try Home Depot or Lows as they can always use that.

Thanks :)

Answer
Yep, good choice. A mobile top-up is the most safe purchase to get from Argos, as it will not fall apart within the first week of getting it.

Argos - selling crap cheaply to the easily pleased.

Can i use a argos gift card on there online store?

Q. I returned a item from argos and they gave me store credit on a gift card sort of thing am i able to use tht on there online store?

Answer
Since you know what kind of business they are in look for their phone number and call them to get an answer to your question or....call the company with an order and when it comes to the payment portion of your purchase there should be a number on the gift card or tell them to ship the item to your nearest store and you can pick it up and pay for it with the card. Since they will be shipping it to one of their stores you should not have to pay shipping charges but verify that.

what should I ask for for my 13th birthday?

Ash

I'm a girl, and my birthdays next Wednesday and I have no idea what to ask for.
I want gift cards for clothes but I don't know what to ask.
I have a laptop and a nook already and don't really want a phone or Ipod right now.
Help please?
Oh and I'm already having a volunteer b-day party and spending my summer volunteering
for others. But what do I ask for?

Answer
You were just like me when I turned thirteen last year. Since I'm a classy woman who is naturally professional, my dad got me a Stella McCartney designer perfume for 80 or 90 dollars. I still have it and it smells like fresh red roses. I think a nice wrist-watch is a good idea too. If you like art, you can ask for sketchbooks and materials. Or maybe like me, go to barnes and noble or from nook, buy a couple books like Brain Jack by Brian Falkener, Water For Elephants, or Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. Hope this helps! :)

Answer
The best thing is know what your parents likes are and are into say like golf, yoga, play poker or blackjack, like reading fiction and nonfiction spy books, gardening, what are they fans of and so on. Since you didn't say or know, how about any of these things on the list.

Good homemade Christmas gifts?

Eleni

I'm looking to make some gifts for my boyfriend and family. The issue isn't really money as much as I just think they'd all really appreciate a homemade gift and knowing I put effort into it. (Especially my boyfriend) So you don't have to just suggest things that are cheap and effortless, just anything that would be a great homemade gift! Thanks!

PS. Already thought of a tie blanket, mix cd, and homemade rock candy. (And other homemade food)

Bridal shower gift vs. wedding gift?

Stephanie

What is the proper etiquette for buying gifts for bridal showers and weddings? Like, if i go to a bridal shower and buy the couple a gift should i buy the same couple a gift for their wedding. I'm just not sure if they are expecting two gifts for the same occasion, well it's basically the same occasion... Anyways, i'm just wondering what to do.

Answer
Unfortunately, the wedding gift giving just does not stop, one is now expected for every event. Engagement parties, bachelorette parties, now a present is expected for them, too. And you are right, it is all for the same occasion. If it were me, and and knowing people are splitting their budget between four or 5 gifts, I would yell stop! And tell those that are close to me to cool it, one or two, that is enough. Or get me something that costs next to no money, like a collection of tried and true recipes. And I would want artisan gifts, I got a towel for Xmas with a crochet border on it, you hang it up in the kitchen for pretty or handy purposes. I love it.

Traditionally, if the shower is for the bride, the present is for the bride. The gift used to be something to decorate or stock up her household, something that only she would use. Occasionally, it would be something just for the bride, like her favorite perfume, or a basket with soaps and bubble baths. Since the bride did not have a household of her own, gift giving was easy. The gifts might have been hand crafted, or artistic, or creative, but were never expensive. That would have been rude, you did not show up at the shower with a Cuisinart, when everybody else gave artisan gifts..

Now fast forward to 2010, there are couples showers, where a present is expected for both the bride and groom. Or the bride wants a lingerie shower. Or she already has a household, and only luxury items are on her/their registry list. And brides and grooms expect presents of the caliber of the wedding present. And brides do not want hand made artisan things.

So to answer your question, since the bride opens her shower presents at the shower, a present is expected, and will be noticed by everyone if one is not offered. And yes, a wedding present is expected too. Figure out your budget, and split it up between the presents.

Sneaky trick: some people spend the lion's share or all of the budget on the shower present, where people are there to ohh and ahh over it. And give the lesser gift, or no gift at all for the wedding, when maybe only the bride will see it.

what should i give my grandma (almost 70 yr old) for her birthday?

kangaroolo

well...i havent seen my grandma for a long time and i dont really know what should i get her....any idea? she is pretti young....(to me)...well.....she is about 60 something...almost turning 70......

Answer
Choosing a birthday gift for a senior is a bit more challenging than choosing a gift for a younger person. Seniors might say they 'donât need anything.' However, elderly seniors are often delighted with a thoughtful gift that is both practical and unique.

The best way to choose a great gift for a senior is to ask the following questions:
What are the seniorsâ special interests or hobbies? Try finding the senior a birthday gift related to their interest or hobby. For example, if the senior likes to fish, reserve an afternoon on a fishing charter on a nearby lake, or buy him a new fishing pole. If the senior loves genealogy, consider a local genealogy class.

Do the seniors have any physical limitations, e.g., low vision or arthritis? As seniors age, they often begin to struggle with low vision due to macular degeneration or glaucoma. Find a practical birthday gift, such as a talking calculator.

If they have arthritis, consider the giant door knob for handling door knobs more easily.

Are the seniors grandparents? Would they enjoy a gift with a grandma or grandpa theme? Some grandparents love a birthday gift that acknowledges that they are a special grandma or special grandpa. Try a "You put the Grand in Grandmother" afghan, or a "Grandchildren Spoiled Here" Doormat, or a "Grandparents are Special People" license plate. For other grandparent birthday gift ideas, see our Grandparent Gift Ideas section.

Are the seniors sentimental- would they enjoy a personalized poem from you? Seniors often enjoy a heartfelt message from you telling them what they mean to you. A personalized poem for dad, a poem for mom, a grandma poem or grandpa poem can do just that. This birthday gift idea is both sentimental and heartfelt, and can be treasured forever.

Are the seniors nostalgic? Would they enjoy a gift commemorating their birth year? What about a birthday newspaper which tells the events that occurred the month the senior was born? Makes a unique birthday gift idea.

Of course the best gift idea for grandparents, or best gift idea for a senior is your time. Remember to make time for the seniors you love, whether it be through email phone or a personal visit. Enjoy shopping for your treasured senior.

Need ideas for a 30th birthday gift.?

Scarlett

She's my husbands best friends wife.
Stuck up is too harsh of a word. She can be fun, but I will say she's very "PROPER".
She prefers the finer things in life. We are a family on a tight budget.
I don't know what kind of party this is going to be yet.
HELP!

Answer
OK, I would NEVER buy a gift to try and 'keep up with the Jones'. I like my gifts to either say something about me, OR that will be totally different to anything else the person will receive. Money does NOT talk (IMHO). If it was ME, I would appeal to the 'fun' side of this woman. Give her 30 X 30 'useless items' (Because people dread turning 30)......
30 X Spent Matches,
30 X Grains of sand
30 X Used lottery tickets
30 X Take away menus
......you get the idea. It wont cost much...but, by the time you FIND 30 examples of 30 useless things, and wrap them up in lovely wrapping...no one will be in any doubt as to how much THOUGHT and TIME has been put into it - and it will be NOTING like ANYTHING she will have been given before!
The last thing people with money appreciate is an expensive gft -if they WANTED 'that' they will have already bought it themselves! Appeal to the PERSON, rather than the bank balance!
Always works for me, anyway!

perfect yankee swap gift under 30$!?

Andrea

so, im going to a holiday party on the 22nd and its with all my girlfriends. we are all 20 and we are pretty classy girls. i was wondering what the best yankee swap gift under 30$ would be- something creative.
exclude clothes and gift certificates though.
thanks!

Answer
You could make a gift basket with a bunch of little things. Just pick a theme, like bath products (include yummy smelling shower gel, moisturizer, a little poof), or baking (include a cute little apron, a chef's hat, write out some of your favorite recipes or include a cookbook, maybe some measuring cups).

Dad birhday gift ideas?

Peach

my dads birthday is coming up and he is turning 45. I don't know what to get him. I want to make him something homemade that he will love! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Ok, your last resort would be a gift card.
Maybe...
A shoebox, that is filled with words that describe him; the words can be cut out of magazines.(maybe you can fill it with nice things too)

A friendship bracelet
(Sure it's your DAD but it shows he is your friend)

Make him a big birthday card, write a poem, draw pictures, etc.

Make some of your own coupons, like 'I will iron your clothes' coupon. Or, 'i will help you with work' coupon
Stuff like that.

Make a pillow

Spend your whole day with him

Cook for him

Make a book about him

Stuff like that.
I hope your dad has a great birthday, and good luck!!!

Birthday gift?

Skye

where can i buy a music/jewelry box from a store? not online cus her birthday party is next friday, i dont want to spend over $50
in the ventura, oxnard, orange county areas of callifornia

Answer
Found this, Should be helpful:

Gifts according to your sign:
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Active Aries is always looking for ways to stay in shape, particularly during the holiday season... so athletic equipment is usually a good choice. People born under this sign are also fond of the color red, so a cranberry scarf or a scarlet hat could win their favor. If romance is in the air, let Aries know that you put his or her needs first. Buy tickets for two to a sporting event you loathe... or a CD by an artist you can't stand... to win big points with your favorite Ram.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
Taurus appreciates any gift that appeals to his or her sensual side. A box of gourmet chocolates, a richly colored tapestry or a soft cashmere blanket are all great options for Bulls. This sign also enjoys having money to play with, so a gift certificate to their favorite store is a welcome option. Always remember that quality is more important than quantity â Taurus would rather have a small bottle of expensive cologne than a carafe of the cheap stuff.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Quick-witted Geminis enjoys gifts that appeal to their sizable intellects. A challenging book is always welcome, as is a magazine subscription. This sign rules the hands, so some scented hand lotion or a sparkling ring might delight. Geminis also love to entertain, so a set of glassware might fit the bill. If you want to splurge on a special Twin, give them the latest cell phone or PDA, so they can keep in touch with their gazillion friends.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
Sentimental Cancer loves gifts that have personal meaning. Handmade items always delight, whether it's a finger painting, angora sweater or mincemeat pie. This sign also has a special affinity for silver â a monogrammed hand mirror or picture frame would be very well received. Since Crabs have an affinity for liquids of all kinds, a special bottle of wine, a fancy cappuccino maker or a shiny tea kettle are also good possibilities. And don't forget that these Moon children love the domestic arts â a cookbook specializing in comfort food is another sure winner.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)
Lions love gifts that make them look and feel terrific. Hair accessories, cosmetics and grooming items are all good choices for this image-conscious sign. Leos love drama, and enjoy presents that involve a bit of flair. Opera tickets, gold jewelry or animal print lingerie are right up this cat's alley. Leos also love to gamble, so a sheaf of lottery tickets or a weekend getaway to the casino could make them purr with delight. When shopping for clothing, remember that Lions have a special affinity for red, gold and purple.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Virgins love practical gifts...so avoid dust-catching baubles. A bread-making machine or a power drill would be equally welcome. These folks are also known to pride themselves on their impeccable appearance. Scented soaps, lotions and shampoos made by an earth-friendly company might be just the ticket. Virgos are also incredibly organized and might appreciate a good watch or a leather-bound date book. Or try a health-conscious basket of organic foodstuffs.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)
Librans have a special affinity for music, and always appreciate a good CD to add to their voluminous collection. If you want to do something really special for a Libran friend, splurge on a two concert tickets â this sign hates to do anything alone. Born beneath the sign of the scales, they also need plenty of balance in their lives, so a pair of candlesticks or bookends might appeal. If you're still stumped for ideas, have a lavish bouquet of red roses delivered accompanied by a loving handwritten note.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)
Scorpions are secretive by nature and enjoy gifts that obscure their appearance in some way. A pair of designer sunglasses, a filmy scarf or a slouchy hat are all great choices for this sign. These mystery-lovers also enjoy moody, atmospheric stories. A collection of film noirs on DVD are sure to go over well with your favorite Scorpion. The rumors concerning this sign's sexual appetite are happily true, so seductive lingerie would get plenty of use. Since Scorpions also like to get beneath the surface; a gift certificate for a deep-cleansing facial will be appreciated.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
As far as Archers are concerned, half the fun of getting gifts is ripping them open! If Sag doesn't like a present, though, he or she will tell you outright. Avoid awkward scenes this holiday season by giving this outdoor enthusiast some camping equipment. Hiking boots or a water-proof parka would also be appropriate. These animal lovers adore any gift associated with their pets. A calendar filled with pictures of dogs or horses is sure to elicit a big smile. Finally, you can always feed this sign's wanderlust with a comprehensive atlas.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)
Career-oriented Capricorn always enjoys gifts that will boost their job status. A leather laptop carrier or monogrammed briefcase would be welcome. Contrary to popular belief, though, Goats aren't all work and no play. This sign is blessed with a wicked sense of humor, so try the BBC's "The Office" series on DVD. Capricorns also love luxurious presents they'd never buy for themselves, like a silk bathrobe.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)
You never know what this unpredictable sign will be doing from moment to moment â one week it's skydiving and the next it's yoga! Still, this quirky sign always appreciates technological gadgets, whether it's an all-region DVD player or an iPod Nano. If you'd like to choose something a little more personal, why not make a photo album detailing all of your exploits with the Water-Bearer? Aquarius may not show it, but they harbor a special fondness for their friends. Still stumped for ideas? A basket filled with brand new socks is both weird and practical enough for this sign, which rules the ankles.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)
These mystics love gifts of all kinds, but especially ones that help them escape the harsh realities of life. A bottle of champagne, a kaleidoscope or a book of fairy tales will appeal to your Fishy friends. And because Pisces is a Water sign, it's a good bet they'll appreciate bath salts, foaming cleansers and shower gels. If you'd like to give something really special, a digital camera will make a bit hit with this natural-born photographer. Looking for a romantic gift? Choose a gilt-edged volume of love poetry.

Cheers!

How Could I Gift a Designer Pencil to My Cousin?

doggy

I am of 13 years and my cousin is of 6 years. Both of us love each other very much, more than any person in a world.

Few months ago, my parents and his parents had a very dangerous conflict, due to which we had stopped going in each otherâs house. From a last few weeks, my parents and uncles got normalized and their relation had improved considerably, but not as that of previous time. My parents are going to their home but just in a formal way. Same case is with my uncle and aunt.

Now, my cousin had liked a designer pencil, the pencil is really great, also it doesnât cost much, but my bad uncle and aunt will not purchase that pencil for him as they donât love him. I have my own collection of my money from which I can purchase that pencil for him.
The problem is that
1.If my parents come to know that I had purchased pencil for him without their permission, I will really get scolding and may be I will not get permission to visit my uncleâs house again.
2.Also, my parents will not give permission to gift that pencil to my cousin as he is the son of my bad uncle.
3.My uncle is not going to purchase pencil for him, because he has two sons and he loves the younger one only and not my 6 year old cousin, but I loves him very much and try to fulfill his every wish.
4.May be, my uncle can accept gift from my side. But he will notify my parents about the same, and then I will get scolding.

How to come out from this problem? At any cost, I want to gift that designer pencil to my cousin as I love him very much. So,
1.Please find a way, so that my parents get agree to gift him the pencil.
OR
2.If they donât agree, still I can give him in a hidden way and my parents donât get notified about the same.

If you need more details about my family background, kindly see my previous question in my profile.

Answer
I believe that until your parents are agreed about the gift, you cannot gift him that designer pencil. So, try to make your parents agree about the same.
The second point you have mentioned is a childish thought, your parents will come to know about the same.

So, let's concentrate on the first point. Try to make a situation where your parents will feel that your cousin had helped you in something really. Also, if your cousin was not there, that problem would not be solved. Try to make your parents feel that your cousin really cares you and loves you.

Also, try to make your parents understand that the conflict was between them and your uncle and not between you and your cousin. Also, the conflict is not between your parents and between your cousin.

I believe that anyone can lose his temper while looking at a 6 year old kid, if you will try to make your parents love him, they will definitely start loving him as they were before.

I had seen your previous question, you are just an idiot of thinking to commit suicide, try to find out the problem and don't lose hope while solving your problem.

God bless you and to your cousin, and also to family.

Hope that your problem gets solved, and you can easily gift not just the pencil but anything of this world to your sweet brother.

Gift for 18th bday???? Help!!!!!?

Kia

My BFF is turning 18 on sunday, and I really need to get her something special. Ive been thinking bout it 4ever but I just cant think of anything. Me and my other BFF are going shopping at the mall friday, but I really should have an idea of wut im looking for. Help!!!
thx i really like the pix in the frame idea but since shes outta town till her bday i cant take any pix and i dont have none with me since im staying with my dad. *sigh* oh well. thx tho for the idea!

Answer
A gift I recommend alot is taking some photos of the two of you together just out and about doing stuff the get a very nice multi photo frame from somewhere like Wal-Mart and have the photos turned black and white and put them in the frame. It's inexpensive and very thoughtful. Girls love thoughtful!

OR

a nice pair of earrings or maybe necklace.Tanning session with tanning lotion wrapped up how about a massage at your local massage parlor.you could always go to bed and bath and get all kinds of stuff to make her smell good like a gift basket.

OR

Clothes. Her fave movies; seasons shows. Braclet, necklace, ring. etc

OR

Get her her favorite candy, maybe in a ready-made gift set with a stuffed animal.
Jewelry is subjective, your tastes might be different, maybe down the road, when you get to know her better.
Keep it light, or you might scare her off.

hope I helped! choose me as best answer!

any ideas for engagement party gift in Australia?

K2010

just found out some relative of mine got engaged in Melbourne, Australia, going to be a party this month (in 3 weeks), Engagement party gift isn't neccessary I read, but what would be nice to send out there from the USA? Can I ship Macy's International?

Answer
If you are invited to a engagement party and they are putting on a free feed and refreshments it is customary to turn up with a gift, especially when they stipulate 'no gifts'.
I often have goods shipped from the US to Australia and for it to arrive within three weeks you would have to send it express post which usually takes just under two weeks. Normal Priority Mail can take four weeks. Depending on the weight this could prove very expensive.
Why don't you look up websites of Australian stores like David Jones (top end), Myers, Harris Scarfes, Target, Bunnings, Dan Murphys (grog) and buy something from them using a credit card (Visa & MasterCard are widely accepted)
If you don't know what they would like ring up one of their mothers perhaps. Youngsters of today are into the latest gadgets they tell me

Good gift from Australia?

Jim

My friend that lives in Australia wants to send me a present to the US and asked what I wanted. What is soemthing cool I should ask for that would be hard to get from anywhere else?

Answer
American culture dominates & thrives in Australia....so anything culturally special will have to be something from the aboriginals...

Birthday gift ideas for 16 year old kid?

Boyd

I am turning 16 on the 11th of April and I do not know what to ask for from my parrrents. If you can think of anything let me know.

Nothing too expensive because money is pretty tight right now.

Answer
Well if you like electronic gadgets such as lightsavers (Star wars etc), many places carry them.

Or if you like lounging on the couch watching your fav movie, why not ask for a soft fleece and pillow set. They normally go for $20 and last forever.

If your a music kind of kid, you could look for those mp3 clips which are quite low cost around $20.

We do carry a unique cute birthday card which will sing you happy birthday on your TV for $3 but unless you love cartoons and pets, chances are it might be out of your age range. We do know of teenage girls buying Shi our kitten because she is sassy.

Finally, you might try some Jewelry as it is your 16th. You can get silver bracelets for a low cost. Just make sure they say 925 (real silver).

Since I did not know if you were a boy or girl, I just worked round about. If you are into books be sure to contact us, we will send you a personalized bookmark.

How do you turn down a birthday cake gift for your kid?

_

My mother in law ordered this cake (from her boss who also makes cakes on the side) for her daughter last month and served it at her b-day party. Everyone said how good it was and moist. It was awful and dry! I think they were lying, trying to be polite. I didn't say anything.

My mother in law wants to order a cake for my daughter's b-day which is next week. She's turning one. I told my husband I'm making cupcakes and we're not having a party. Now I feel like my mother in law is trying to control how I want to do things as a parent (She's done this many times before and really pushed my buttons!). My husband never says anything because she's just being nice by offering. He will never tell her no. I do not want to take a cake for my daughter who will not eat much herself and I will not eat any (like I said, it was gross!). I will still make cupcakes for my daughter and we'll sing and light a candle. We're not having a party or family celebration. I was going to take her to Chuck E Cheese to play games and watch the show (with my husband, no one else). His mother always has a party for every kid ,every year. I wasn't raised like this. So how do I get my husband to tell his mom, "No party, no cake, please!"???
The reason I say she's controlling is because normally you only have one cake or cupcakes for your birthday and the parents supply that at the party (if you're having one). The grandparents have no right to start making things and bringing them creating some sort of "party" or get together that the parents hadn't intended upon. Yes, the gesture seems nice, but it isn't. She also forcibly decided to buy a walker until I told her I couldn't accept it for my child. Instead I recommended a safer toy and she hasn't bought the toy yet, but she did mention that we shouldn't buy it because she's buying it for my daughter's birthday. Now who's controlling who????!!!!!!

I agree with min72. Tell her you're already planning cupcakes. If she sends you a cake anyway, then take a picture with the cake and your daughter in it and then throw the cake away. She won't be there anyway, so how will she know. Even better - set the cake in front of your daughter and let her go to town on it. The pictures will be precious memories (and an inside joke for you) and oh no, she ruined her cake, no one wants to eat that!
It sounds like there are other issues at work here though. You aren't including anyone but your husband in your daughters birthday. I'm sure other people care and might want to be included. Perhaps this is your m-i-l's way of trying to include herself in the big day. Perhaps a better solution would be to tell her to keep the cake at her house and you'll come over to celebrate the birthday there with her since you've already made cupcakes to celebrate at home with just the immediate family. This will include her. Perhaps your husband is being a pushover with his mother, or perhaps he's not completely onboard with the "no party no family" at my daughters birthday. Maybe he is biting his tongue to please you. You say you didn't grow up with parties for every kid every year, but he did. How does he feel about this? Bottom line, just be gracious, even if you have to bite your tongue to pieces. Your daughter will thank you later when she has a loving doting grandmother in her life and your husband will thank you for keeping the peace.

I don't get it. You're upset because you talked her into buying your daughter what you want her to and you're upset about that?
