Proper dollar amount for high school graduation gift?

Brandy C

We just received a graduation announcement for my husbands niece that lives 950 miles away. We only hear from them around Christmas time. We already have plans for that weekend so there is no possible way to attend. What is the proper dollar amount that we should spend, or send her, as a gift?

Answer
I would say $25-$30 is a proper amount. I just graduated myself, and I personally would be grateful for that amount if I recieved a gift or money especially since you only hear from them about once a year so it sounds like you're not super close.

What's a good high school graduation gift for a guy?

Anne M

I'm friends with his mom and she invited me to his graduation party, but I'm not sure what would be a good gift. Would a gift certificate be best? If so, what store?

Answer
Here are some great Graduation gift ideas:

1) The Mist 2 Speakers for iPod Nano would be a great gift, he can listen to all his favorite music without headphones!
I have a Nano and sometimes I just want to listen to music at home without putting the headphones in, here's a link to the green set of speakers (also comes in blue):

2) He doesn't have a Nano yet? Here you can find the new iPod Nano: http://shopping.yahoo.com/b:MP3%20Players:22442877

3) A great techie gift is a digital picture frame. They come in different colors too: http://shopping.yahoo.com/b:Electronic%20%26%20Computer%20Gifts:784717210

Would you add "No gift necessary" on high school graduation announcements?

Mary Ellen

There are some people who you send announcements to that it's OK if they send a gift (like close family), but there are others that we'd just like to send one to but don't want them to feel obligated to send a gift or think that's the reason we're sending the announcement. If you mention "No gift necessary" does it make them assume that you're thinking of gifts?

This might not really fit in the Financial Aid category, but having a senior in high school I've done my share of researching financial aid lately so I thought this would be a good audience to answer my question.

Answer
I personally wouldn't mention anything about a gift. Most people understand that announcements are sent out just to share the joy to everybody else (just like when baby announcements are sent out) but it doesn't mean hey send gifts please. When those announcements are sent out you'll have some people who will go buy a gift (no matter what you put on that announcement) just because there excited and proud. At the same time you'll have others who may send a card saying congratulations but probably nothing else and some may not even do that.

I just don't think most people would assume oh gotta send a gift just because they received an announcement. And if your really worried than add on the announcements 'just to let you know' or something similar or stick a small note in it saying that as well but I would never mention the word gift. I am really strongly against using the word gift on anything because I feel like it makes people sound greedy (even if they are saying don't send a gift) because then its like oh I was expected to send a gift and that person may never have wanted to. A gift is a gift and should never be expected so refraining from using the word at all allows those people to make their own choices on it.

high school graduation gifts for guys?

Dontspeakl

I was invited to a lot of parties for my friends who are graduating this year. I was invited to this guys who I kinds know a little. Like towards the end of the school year we started talking a lot, but its not like we have hung out outside of school or anything. I have a tiny stupid little crush on him. I want to give him something good for graduation. BUT I dont have a whole lot of money and I dont want it to seem like I tried too hard. -he runs track, hes going to duquesne, and he used to live in Pittsburgh pa and has like tons of pride in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
you don't have to get him anything. he's not your boyfriend, and you guys just started talking. If you graduated from high school and he got invited to your party, he probably wouldnt buy you anything b/c you aren't together and you don't have a tight friendship. But if you absolutely have to get him something, get him a gift card to like walmart or target, no more than $20. that will help him get some stuff for school, and you won't lose out on any real $ or time if he doesn't talk to you anymore after he goes to college.

I would like to know what the proper gift giving etiquette is for a high school graduation for my brother's second wife's daughter. We just received a graduation announcement for this girl's upcoming graduation. My brother has been married to his second wife for about 3 years, they live across the country, and I've only met the daughter approximately 5 times. Are we required to send a gift? I feel she's not really "family" and I barely know her. What is the proper etiquette in this situation?

Answer
You follow the same etiquette as you would for any other high school student that you received a graduation announcement for. There isn't "special" etiquette for a step niece. Send a card with $25.

What is appropriate amount of money or gift card for a high school graduation?

I have 3 graduations coming up in the next 2 weeks ~ my nephew, my niece and one of my best friend's son, who I have known since birth and is family as far as I'm concerned. What is the average amount of money or gift cards people give for high school graduations these days?

I haven't been to a high school graduation since my youngest sister about 13 years ago. I don't want to be cheap to any of these kids, they are all special to me and I want to do the right thing. Thanks for the advice!

Answer
I just graduated from high school last year, and most of my aunts/uncles gave me $20-$50. It really depends on the relationship you have with them. Also, gifts can be great ideas too-something they can use for college or an apartment...towels, hamper, a cute sheet set, a roll of quarters and laundry essentials...any of these can be good.

What to get an indie as a high school graduation gift?

Marguerite

I have this friend who is graduating high school and I really like him. He's an indie guy and I don't know what to give him as a graduation present. He's going on a road trip over the summer so maybe the gift could relate to his road trip or college? I don't know?

Answer
Give him an Itunes gift card. We indies are crazy about indie & obscure music after all.
If he's a jewelry-wearing guy, search "indie jewelry" on the Internet.
Anything vintage you think he'd like (posters, art, jewelry, hat, sunglasses, etc.)
