Would it really be practical to buy gifts online? Are they too expensive or reasonable? Would you consider buying gifts from ebay? What are the risks?

It can be practical to buy gifts online IF it is from a store that is not in your area (i.e. you live 100 miles from the nearest mall), or IF it is something you cannot find in a store (i.e. a rare artifact on eBay). BUT if it is something that is readily available in the store, I would not buy it online. Not only will you find sales in-store, but you also will not have to pay the exorbitant shipping fees. I sold a few hundred dollar gift cards on ebay and they paid with paypal. How do I make sure that they don't come back saying there was nothing on that card making me have to refund the money and end up losing both ways?
