Is it proper ettiquette to send someone a gift for promotion if other employee death was why they received it?

Should I give a congratulations gift to someone if they got a promotion due to the fact that the other person in that position died. It is a good thing the person got the promotion but horrible that the other person passed away. Just wondering what is proper in this situation?

It's still appropriate. The company could have done nothing and left the position vacant or hired someone from the outside to fill the position. The fact that they didn't do either of these means the promoted employee deserved the promotion.

I bought the latest macbook pro about 2-3 weeks before the $100 app store gift card promotion came into play. Since this promotion is for college students only (which I am) can I still redeem the gift card?

You can't. I got a Nook HD and it was $199 but weeks later the Nook HD+ was only $149. It sucks.
