Gift for my 80-year-old great aunt?

JoMama

My great-aunt whom I am very close to just turned 80. We are having a HUGE party for her on Saturday, and I want to get her the perfect gift. She doesn't have any kids and isn't married, so my sister and I are like her grandkids and it's important that I get something meaningful and useful. Any ideas?

Answer
Does she have a cell phone? You could get her one with pre-paid minutes at Wal-Mart. That way she could call you all when she wanted and there is also a level of safety for her too.

The have a new cell phone called Jitterbug it has bigger numbers and it easier for older people to operate.

Teach her how to operate the phone and she will appreciate the safety of a phone at her fingertips.

Also, ladies of a certain age like candy (a big box of good candy), perfume (find out her favorite, some lovely house slippers I got these Goody Bon Bons for my Mother-in-law she is 85 and she adores them:http://thedesignpatch.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=GG-BB

Try to find out what she wants and needs.

Perhaps a locket with photos of everyone or a photo album with everyone's photos of old times and new.

A soft warm robe for winter or some nice night gowns. Does she like to read? or watch TV - a subscription to a favorite magazine. Does she have cable TV? She might enjoy DISH network or cable.

Does she have a simple computer she can send email on? Older people really love sending emails and going on chat boards for seniors.

Coupons for your to help her with chores.

Gift certificates to the beauty shop for hair and nail sessions.

My Grandmother used to love Nantucket Briar lotion and perfume products by Crabtree & Evelyn. When I smell it today; I can remember her so vividly.

A gift basket with all sorts of goodies for her that you pack yourself or get a good gift basket company to make for you.

Food gifts from Harry & David:

Harry & David are the BEST I have been using them for years to gift and also send a gift to myself now and then. They have fantastic truffles.

How can I make his bday gift 80's themed but not lame?

peachy

My guy is turning 29 soon, and I want to remind him that he's a child of the 80's, and not almost 30.

What can I give him that is practical, cool, and 80's-themed? I don't want to get him something he's not going to use, like a He-Man action figure. That would be silly.

We've been dating for two months, so nothing overboard, either.

Answer
it's difficult to make the 80's not seem lame. the reason we love the 80's is because they were so lame!

what exactly did he love from the 80s? Get him an A-team dvd or something. I bought my gf a cool staypuffed marshmallow man figure from Ghostbusters because she loved him in the movie and was real sad when they killed him.

You could find out what his favourite 80s shows or movies were (mines Goonies, before you ask) and get him something to do with that

Any Ideas of a great gift to send my German friend?

Karma

I'm in the US and I have a dear friend in Germany. I would like to send her some photos and a special gift. She is 80 years old. Any ideas of a wonderful gift to send?
Thank you in advance!
LOL, my area is famous for bricks and pottery. I will find something. Thank you for answering.

Answer
I am an American and have many friends in Germany, including my goddaughter. Over the years I have found that Germans tend to really respect the small, but thoughtful, gifts. Anything that is large or disproportionate is tends to be poorly received.

You mentioned that your area is famous for pottery. A small lovely piece that is representative of your region would be perfect, along with your framed photo (the picture is a really nice touch). I am certain that your friend would really enjoy it. I have also found that local foodstuffs are always welcome. If appropriate, perhaps some local jam or preserves, and a small pottery piece to hold jam or preserves? Many Germany eat jams and preserves with breadrolls in the morning for breakfast, so this would likely be well received.

I have attached a link to some other gift giving tips for Germany. Hope you find it helpful!

What could be an unusual gift for my best friend?

FRIEND

I have a very nice friend I want to gift her something that is unusual. I don't want to gift her the usual things that we give to our friends on their birthday or on different ocassions so please give some new idea.

Answer
Choosing a gift, remember - itâs not the object you choose that will make pleasure, but the way you present it to the recipient. Let it be a nail, but if you announce, that this will be the last nail in the coffin of your bitterest enemy, this gift will be welcome and remembered in years! What I want to say, presenting gifts takes 80% of creativity, 10% of understanding personâs interests and only 10% of the staff youâll choose to serve you for a present. Use any crazy idea, fill it with positive sense of turn it into a joke, perform the process of offering as a kind of ceremony, and you will be the King of Gifts!

You can invent it a legend to your ordinary gift and make it special. You just offer her a pebble of some unusual shape you picked up during your last vacation? Say, this pebble is so old, it has known dinosaurs and prehistoric men, and it will whisper Her its stories whenever she will have tedious time.

Any ideas for an 80th birthday party celebration?

Dave R

I need help on gift ideas, and unique decorating, etc. It's my mom's birthday and we have rented a room at a resturant. What do you thonk of pictures of my mom during different satges - little girl, teen, wedding, etc? Thanks for all answers.

Answer
a picture board is a great idea- I did one for my moms 60th party and she had a great time showing off her pics to everyone! Go get one of those tri-fold display boards and put tons of pics of her throughout the years on it- or you can make a slide show and play it on someones laptop computer- whichever works better for you. For decorating I just used my moms favorite colors- pink, purple, and silver accents- we had fake flower petals scattered down the center of the tables and a set of pretty candles next to a vase of lillies. I also found small travel candles for 50 cents and had one of those at each table setting as a party favor for the guests. We had balloon arrangements all over the room and hung streamers and some birthday banners too. I had also found on Ebay a book all about the year she was born and we had that on the picture table so people could look through that also and I found a Life magazine from th week she was born on there too (I gave that as a gift to her and she loved it).
so as far as decorations- go with something that you think she would like, maybe vases of her favorite flowers all over, or make it a theme relating to her favorite hobby and decorate along those lines (gardening, bingo, quilting- whatever!) This is a good time also to get some family pictures taken so make sure to gather up the whole group before people start to leave to get some good family shots.

My brother's wedding shower is next weekend and his wedding is in a few months.

When friends and cousins get married I usually do $35-$50 for a shower gift and $80-$100 for the wedding gift.

What is appropriate to spend for my brother? I was thinking $65 for the shower and $100 for the wedding. What do most people spend on close family?

Answer
What is appropriate is whatever you can afford to spend without it being a burden to you.

A good gift doesn't have to cost a fortune and just because you are related to someone doesn't mean you HAVE to spend a lot.

I spent probably $25 on the gift I got for my brother and his wife. My mom has this special Tupperware pickle jar that has a strainer that lifts the pickles out of the brine and has a fork built in so you never have to go fishing for the pickles, you just lift the strainer, and stab the pickle with a fork. Every time they saw it, my brother and sister in law would say "we wish we had one of those". So when their wedding shower invite turned up I said "Mom, talk to your Tupperware lady, order one of those pickle jars for me". I wrapped it up with a couple jars of their favorite pickles and for $25, it was easily one of their favorite gifts.
