Birthday gift for girlfriend? (long distance)?

x3zooz

Hi,
so my GF's birthday is coming up and she lives in another country and I can't mail her anything at the moment.
Is there something she can use online? gift cards or any other stuff?

thanks

2014 calendar
a CD.
a new wallet-sized photo tucked into a greeting card.
postcards for her photo album.
small photo album with pages made from plastic that doesn't damage pics & other paper items
a paperback book; see the NY Times best selling paperback list or go with a special interest of hers; of course, Amazon & publishers like Barnes & Nobles are the most common sites for books

Other comments:
A pen friend in the UK sent me several nice gifts, such as a calendar, a small photo album, & an ornament made from a white rope with flat little stuffed animals attached, the animals made of printed fabric & stuffed with nicely scented herbs for hanging in the kitchen. I really loved that ornament, though I took it down after it gathered dust after about 10 years. It must have come from a gift shop or kitchen supply store in the UK. If you find something that doesn't weigh too much in a major dept. store where you live, then you could find out if it's also sold online for delivery to other countries. Ask at the customer service dept. because they might help you find out. Seems to me that many of the shopping websites only show a small number of items. If you saw it in the store, then at least you'd have some idea that it was an acceptable quality & not junky looking.

There are also sites for posters of art prints. I especially like Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party. There are also some that he did of dancing couples. Other modern artist's, too, have done paintings on dancing couples. Another good artist is Escher, especially Day & Night with repeated birds & their shadow world. It looks good with a black frame with glass, but you might want it without a frame for shipping. These art prints are quite easy to find through a search engine for your browsing. There are many companies selling these posters along with smaller items like magnets with the art print images.

Magnets are a very good lightweight gifts. I've taken some of them in my suitcase as hostess gifts, have shipped them along with other Christmas gifts, & have bought some for myself. I have one with a French Impressionist art print, others with replicas of seed packets sold by Luther Burbank, & many fun magnets. These magnets are sold in gift shops, at tourist stops, in health food stores, & many other stores, as well as at the art print companies. You've probably seen racks of them for sale.

Keep in mind that November is the time when stores are at their peak in terms of available merchandise, so if you have any time within the next few weeks, you might want to stock up on a few little things. The health food store where I shop sells knit hats, gloves, lots of socks with clever designs, kitchen supplies, & beeswax candles, with the biggest choice this time of year. I've bought the magnets, blank greeting cards, a butterfly shaped potholder from South America, angel shaped candles, beeswax candles, incense, & the over-priced knee-high socks with the black birds on a clothesline printed on them that I love so much. It's my experience that if I see something that I like in November, I'd better grab it up to have on hand when I want gifts for co-workers & as hostess gifts in December. Otherwise, I would spend much time & gas money searching for something in December. Likewise, there are little gift books & bookmarks near the cash register of the bookstores. So, if it's likely that you're going to be wanting many "little gifts" in your future, then when you have the time, you might want to shop ahead.

You can also look at the craft fairs & farmers markets that sometimes have a few tables with gifts for sale. I bought a necklace made from a black satin cord with a carved red elephant at a farmers market for around $8. I bought a couple of lightweight wooden mobiles with 2 white birds, either doves or seagulls, one for myself & one for a gift, from a craft fair where they were sold by an older couple. This type of item might be bought now & shipped another time if you have a few hours to go to a craft fair sometime in Nov-Dec.
