What's a nice souvenir/gift from New Zealand?

Tammy

I have a cousin coming home from New Zealand (South Island) and she asks what I want from there. I already have gone visiting in Auckland and Wellington and found nothing interesting to take home except for cheese and kiwi. What other specialities are there to give as gifts?

Answer
Wine! NZ only exports their worst wines (thanks Montana... not). Burnt Spur Vineyards Russian Jack Pinot Noir. They don't export it. And God, I miss it. If you like a less spicy Pinot Noir, go for the Rabbit Ranch. Or Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc. Yeah okay I tended bar in NZ.

Other than wine, NZ's best stuff are the little crafts. I bought my girlfriend a pair of earrings from a little gallery in Cromwell, outside Queenstown. Arts and crafts fairs are everywhere in NZ (like the Arts Centre in Christchurch), even locally owned galleries/boutiques and if your cousin has good taste, she could find you something unique.

But if you want something more "NZ specific", I'd go with All Blacks attire. I have an All Blacks shirt and tie and people always stop me and say, "All Blacks!" They're only the best rugby team in the world. Then again, you could've picked those up in Welly/Auckland...

And yep - Greenstone, Paua, and carved bone are cool - though gimmicky and often cheap in quality - watch that. And Manuka Honey's a specialty.

Phew.

When is the Twilight movie being released in NZ?

I need a Christmas gift for my best friend but I'm not sure what to get her. I was thinking of a photo mosaic or a canvas of us. I'm really not sure has anyone got any ideas of what I can do or make for her but very creative. Using pictures of us...thank u so much!

Answer
How about using your digital photos to create a personalized acrylic(perspex/lucite) Photo block of a memorable time or you together. They are similar to wooden photo blocks however the photos are "face mounted" to the back of the acrylic block. Have a look here to see what they are like:

What are some easy American gifts I can send home?

Jo

Christmas is coming and I want to send a small box of goodies to my friends and family back home in New Zealand. I'm going to put in some candy which isn't available in NZ, but I need some more ideas for things which would be perceived as very 'American'. Any help would be appreciated!

Answer
A jigsaw puzzle the family can put together of a beautiful scenery of a place in America.

Anything with American flags on it.

Statue of Liberty souvenirs.

Pictures of you in different places in America (even if its around town) put in frames.

Figurines of the Bald Eagle or Military commemorative.

A small bag of Miracle Grow, a small hand shovel for gardening, and the state flower for wherever. I don't know if America has a national flower?? So I would just do state. For Texas its the Bluebonnet.

Donations made in their name. You can get a small certificate or something for the donation and send it to them letting them know they helped feed children, or helped some woodland area.

A photo arrangement of different things you see that makes you think of them. If you have a mother who loves to cook, taking a picture of a restaurant that sells some NZ favorites would remind you of her. A friend that loves to make jokes could be represented by a picture of a local gag and joke magic store.

Shot glasses with something American on it. A famous quote or funny picture.

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave commemorative.

A Republican and Democratic Elephant and Donkey.

Shells from the beach.

Preserved butterflies in a frame.

I was given a NZ$50 certificate for Christmas but I forgot about it for months, then left it at a house that I won't return to for a week. I can't remember if it was good for 6 months or 12... could anyone here tell me? Thanks for your attention.

Answer
I just looked on www.glassons.com and it looks like all they have are gift cards. Gift cards don't expire. But i didn't see anything on the website about certificates.

How can I download a gifted app from another country?

Misa_Misa

A friend from New Zealand sent me an iPhone app yesterday. When I try to download it, it says that the apps is available to NZ customers only. Is there any way that I could download it, I'm from the Philippines by the way.

Answer
POSSIBLY use a proxy or pay your friend a visit. ;)

Considering it says to NZ -customers- only, you may have luck registering for an iTunes Store account with the country selected as NZ, but this would probably mean you don't have the app gifted to you (I'm not sure if there's a "Regift" option of sorts).

Best places and ways to travel within Australia and New Zealand?

Q. Hello,
A friend and I are planning to travel to Australia, New Zealand and one other country for three weeks. The other country would be Bali, Thailand, Fiji or Tahiti. We will be there from mid-December to mid-January. We are there as a graduation gift to ourselves and would be there on a budget. We are wanting to do some surfing, scuba diving, snorkling, hiking and of course sightseeing. We would like to know what are the best places to do these things. We would like to stay away from tourist traps. We are also wanting to know what airports and cities would be best to fly in and out of. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Tahiti is expensive. it is French so prices are so so much higher than bali or Thailand. You would be in NZ and Australia during the peak season school holidays so accomodation prices will be expensive unless you plan in staying in Back packer hostels. It may pay to book ahead if you know where you will be. I would suggest you have a few days in Sydney on your way to New Zealand or the Gold Coast you can fly into Brisbane for the Gold Coast it's 1 hour by train. I dont know if you want to hire a car in NZ that is the best way and if you can fly into Auckland and out of Queenstown that would be very good. Look at www.airnewzealand.co or www.jetstar.com.au
