Gardening gift basket?

Alex

Hi, I want to make a gardening gift basket for my mother in law for her birthday. What are some practical things I can put into the planter. I am setting everything up in a rustic wheel barrel planter I purchased. I also wanted to add some extra things...and I thought of a nail brush and nice hand cream any other extras come to mind that I should add? Thanks a lot.

P.S. I don't want to include seed packets or bulbs, since she already has most of that stuff

Answer
Nice gloves are always a plus and any good, sturdy hand tools. Good quality pruners are hard to come by, she would probably appreciate that. If you're in the city, include a couple bags of composted manure. Try to find some plants she may not have. I don't know your zone, but prickly pear are a fun cactus that are hardy in zone 5+ and maybe even zone 4. Agave is another underused succulent. Tons of varieties - really cool.

How about a wreath or sign she can post on her door - "In the Garden". Garden catalogs are always fun too. Tons available , most in full color. A nice sun hat, sunscreen, lip balm w/sunscreen are also nice gifts. Ohhh, I have a garden tote bag that I absolutely love! You can store your tools or whatever inside and there is pockets all around the outside. I think it's waterproof too. Special hose nozzles are a good gift, a trellis, decorative outdoor pots, a fountain. Do a search on the internet, I found instructions to make a "miniatiure potted pond", I have it in a word file if you'd like to email me at sound4hound@yahoo.com Good Luck!

gift for the gardening, composting dad?

Lyla is

im trying to figure out a fathers day gift for my dad, and i would like to make it myself. whats a good gift for my dad who loves his compost bin & vegetable garden?

Answer
twirly things are cool. like, spin in the wind toys. pretty but also can scare away certain pests like fruit or worm eating eating birds.

like this:
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pinwheel

plastic is cool of course, or laminated but paper would let you print images off the net. i do Like the solid colors they show in that how2 but just saying since it is father's day like if u know how to print up pix of yourself and family.

if u make the blades rounded instead of pointy and color it right it will look like a flower. but also i have seen some that managed to make the center round somehow. adding a disk or just cutting it right. if u add spacer between disk and part that spins then face can stand still while petals spin.

other famous one for dads is the tshirt. u can write or tiedye with bleach. or dye with koolaid. and also u got the transfers but that is cash, like $8 for ten sheets? but i mean the paper u can iron onto a shirt; u print a picture on the paper first by using the regular computer printer, so u can use family pix or personal art.

then of course a card. or 'coupons'. like for one weed picking session or one car washing, one hug, one movie together, etc. it varies on what u think he needs and what u like plus if u want to just make nice ones or ones that will mostly be budgeting time spent together.

cards u can make online and print out besides all the other ways. Some sites are better than others:
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkkW9zDpK8i4AwYRXNyoA?p=custom+printable+father%27s+day+card&fr=b1ie7&fr2=sb-top&sao=1

a funny thing online is making your own magazine cover. like gardening dad of the year or whatnot:
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkkEw0DpKwfIAvgRXNyoA?p=make+magazine++cover+-.makezine.com&y=Search&fr=b1ie7&fr2=sb-top&sao=1

idk if ur dad is online but here in a good link to email him:
http://www.geocities.com/missbanji/seedswapping.html

^to seed swap boards, usually can get for SASE if u have none to trade. dont go to daves cause its a pay place. check for level of activity b4 u sign to any tho. some are relatively inactive.

also, even if he is not online, lots of dads like to read. Online u can find him neat texts to share and keep him up to date. maybe try searching with your area plus the words "soil survey" for texts he would find fundamental. also, if he likes to try growing new things it is easy to get very important but obscure details online. here is how to find local or cultivation info...

well, i'm going to link u to two threads actually, one about how to find info but the other about making your own fertilizer because it is relatively new and bears heavily on compost tech:

so here they are:

Secret Santa: gardening gift ideas?

r

We are having a Secret Santa in our office and the name that I picked is for a woman who I don't know much about. All I know is that she has a nice garden near her home. Last year, I picked her name and I bought her a plant. She loved it! I don't want to get her the same gift this year. It's too difficult to transport from home during the morning rush hour. Any suggestions? The maximum is $20. Thanks!

Answer
She would like a gift card to a gardening center.

My father passed away a couple months ago and I want to get my mom something special. She loves to garden and my dad and her use to share that bond. Is there any new great gardening tools or things out there that you recommend?

Answer
How about a nice big basket, the size she could take into the garden to put her gear and any produce in, and fill it with new hand tools, seeds, gardening gloves, and maybe a gift certificate to her favorite garden store--if a nearby garden center doesn't offer them, Lowe's has great plants and a lot of gardening supplies.

Can you use Applebees gift cards at other restaurants?

Rob the Co

For example on an Olive Garden gift card I got, you could use it at Macaroni Grill, and some other affiliates. Does Crapplebees have this type of affiliation with another restaurant chain that you could use the gift card at?

Answer
If you can use the gift card at more than one restaurant owned by the same company it will say so somewhere on the card. If you don't like Applebees and would prefer a gift card for a different restaurant, there are websites where you can sell gift cards for cash or exchange them for gift cards from other companies. If you want to check some of the reputable companies, here is a link with more information: http://www.squidoo.com/unwanted-gift-cards

Answer
Sorry abou your dad. Looks like your mom will have to alter some of her jobs. I am an older woman and would recomend an electric tiller, potting bench or an outdoor watering station. The tiller is light weight, there are a bunch of benches and the watering is handy when you're pulling weeds on an easier after the rain day and don't want to mess up inside. Good luck!

How big of a garden does one need to live off of it all year round with different fruits and veggies?

How big of a garden does one need to live off of it all year round with different fruits and veggies?

Answer
Hello x s,

I guess I was to poor to know the difference. I have always lived off my garden and fruit trees. Even today we have a 20x20 feet garden. We buy no vegetables or fruits (except watermelons) from the grocery stores. I can taste the chemicals farmers use on their vegetables they sell in grocery stores. A person could easily live off of a 10x10 feet (no melons) garden.

We give alway more vegetables and fruits than we can eat. This year we canned over 30 quart jars of tomatoes. Each Christmas, our relatives and friends will receive a big basket as a gift. Inside is a red and white checked table cloth, 1 quart jar mixed yellow and red tomatoes, 1 quart jar pickled beets, 1 quart jar pickled green cherry tomatoes, 1 quart jar carrots, 1 quart jar plum jam, 5 Ruby Red Gradefruit, 10 lemons, a bag of dried figs, and 15 Mandarin Oranges. They love us at Christmas. I also have nine rare fruit trees.

In order to live all year round, you would need to live in a place like Southern California. Today my garden still has tomatoes, green beans, garlic, onions, eggplants, brussel sprouts, and bell peppers.

You would need good soil. I use no chemicals or pesticides. I use home made compost and chicken manure to enrich my soil. Good soil produces twice the yields of bad soil.

If you wanted a variety all year long, you would have to learn to can your vegetables and fruits. We have enough canned vegetables to last us all winter.

Your question: A 10x10 feet garden is more than enough area. If you want four (4) dwaft fruit trees, than you would need a 20x20 feet area.

I have been a gardener for sixty (60) years. I love to help new gardeners get started. Just like my uncle helped me get started in the hills of Kentucky at the age (smile) of three. I helped.

You have a great day, from Los Angeles.

What types of plants do i need to put into a small to medium memory garden?

Q. I am a life scout and i want to make a memory garden for my church for my eagle project and i dont know what types. i want plants that bloom year around and all so, if u have any thing to help me out with plants, ideas on how to get donations, and umm mabye advice on a memory thanks a lot

Answer
Cameron, the plant donations should primarily come from the church membership itself. Each family could donate a plant, depending on where your garden will be placed (shadey, sunny, or semi-shadey location). You might want to make small signs for each plant, telling people what the plant is and who it is in memory of.

At this time of year, church members could also buy some new tulip bulbs or other spring bulbs to add to your garden.

Some good hardy perennials? Daylilies, peonies, sedum, tiger lilies, asiatic lilies, irises, and daisies. And mums really add a lot of fall color.

A little shrub rose would look nice too.

You might too want to ask for money so you can buy seeds or annual plants for next year to add to the garden in the spring. If it is a really sunny place, throw some moss rose seeds near the front. This is a type of plant that reseeds itself every year too. Allysum is another fine border plant.

Another thing you are going to have to consider too is who is going to take care of your garden once you are finished. Who will water it? Who will weed it the next year? See if someone will help you out there from the congregation membership. Remember, everyone has certain "gifts" given to them in a church, and there are people in your church who were blessed with green thumbs.

Good luck! A great idea for an Eagle Scout project!
