My husband and I combine our income rather than worrying about who earned what. We do set limits on gifts, but we discuss it before each holiday/birthday based on our current financial position. (We are in grad school, and usually don't have much money to spend. This past year, my husband got a larger stipend, so we were able to revisit how much we spend on gifts.) When we set a price limit, we have the same limits to follow; it isn't weighted based on our incomes.

That being said, you should figure out what works best for you two. This is a conversation to have with your spouse, not with people on the internet.
