80th birthday gift?

futurefash

My grandmas 80th birthday is comming up and I am very close to her and although her party invitation said no gifts I still feel the need to get her somthing. I see her at least 3 times a week. She does a lot of sewing and embroidery but she has everything she needs for that. She occasionally bakes. She likes game shows such as Jeopardy, Millionaire, and Wheel of Fortune if that helps at all. She watches QVC a lot. She likes Carol Higgins Clark and Mary Higgins Clark but I think she's read all of their books. The top things she wants are a massager chair and a kitchen aid mixer but those are both too expenseive. Any ideas? This is comming from a 13 year old if that helps.
Joey Starr I like that idea. She loves cheese and I know her favorite kinds that she rarely buys because they are kind of expensive but I would be able to afford it.

Answer
It's hard to buy good stuff for someone knowing they could die of old age soon and someone else will wind up with it. That's why I get edible stuff. Get her some of her favorite candies.

MissRemors

I have an aunt who will be 80 next month, she lives in Toronto, Canada...I am in UK. I want to send her something about £50 sterlings worth....she has quite expensive tastes...and is the lady with everything! any ideas please?

Answer
Hi, I am a Brit living in Toronto with an 80 year old mother. I would suggest a gift certificate for high tea at the King Edward Hotel. As long as she has some one to take her. (You could take my mum too, just to save me the bother, lol)

here is a site that shows all high tea places in TO,

(now u have to take my mum)

Suggested gift for a man's 80th birthday?

ALAN B

No idea what he's interested in.

Answer
At age 80 you've been there and done that so that does limit the ideas. Does he like to read and can't anymore buy him a CD player and you can get plenty of books he could playfrom the library. Does he have a hot toddy occasionally, give him his favorite liqueur, If he's not on one of these strict diets for his health, bake something for him or better yet cook a dinner of foods you know he can eat and have him over.

What do you get the person that has it all? Im trying to do something different so I am purposely not listing his interests. Any help is appreciated.

Answer
Awww that's so cute. Well, you can never go wrong with a watch and a birthday cake!! Make sure you get the candles that are actual numbers though, the 8 and the 0....... I don't think he'll like blowing out 80 candles. I didn't like blowing out 25 on monday!

I dyed my hair - it's growing out/roots showing - what's the cheapest way to fix?

CB

My hair is naturally a light/medium brown. 3 months ago I had it dyed to a darker brown - redish color in the salon ($80!!). Obviously some roots are now showing - so what should I do?

Do I have to get my whole head of hair dyed again?
Can they just dye the roots?
Could I buy a box to fix it myself?

I'm concerned with the cost - originally my cut and color was a birthday gift.

Answer
Hi there. Going to the salon is ALWAYS going to be expensive.

Do you have to get your whole head dyed again?...the answer is no. Whether you decide to go to a salon or do it yourself you have a couple of options.

if you liked the haircolor and want to continue with it, I would see if the hairdressesr would give you the name of the brand of color that was used and what "level" and "base" it was. Level being the lightness or darkness of a color...base being the "underlying" color. (Gold, Ash, Viloet, etc.) If you can't get this information, it isn't a huge deal.

What you would have to do is go to a local beauty supply store like Sallys beauty supply. There they should be able to help you match up your hair color.

There is acouple of ways you can touch up the hair. If you liked the color and are going to stick with it, all you would do is color the roots of your hair taking about a half of an inch to an inch of hair at each time(starting at front hairline). Then, you would let the hair proccess for the amount of time required. The last 5 minutes, you can pull any of the leftover dye through the rest of your hair. This will just help to match the roots with the shaft and ends.

Now, if you aren't sure you want to keep that permenant color but you don't like that line of re-growth, you canalways pick up a demi-permanent haircolor and just pull it through a highlighting cap. That will make the re-growth a little less obvious.

I don't usually suggest going to the drug store to buy haircolor. The shelf life actually isn't the same as professional haircolor. Also, smaller beauty supply stores are always re-stocking so the color is never sitting on the shelf longer than 1 or 2 months. (Less harsh on the hair as well)

Hopefully this helps yah a little. Good Luck!

I have freshwater fish, guppies. This is a brand new tank due to the last set dying because,(the pet store said), the tank was too small. Now I have a 10 gallon tank and every couple of days, I find a dead fish. I keep the temp. between 78 and 80 degrees. I am careful about how much I feed them. I used distilled water when I started the tank. I know it is pass the new tank stage. I am just lost as to what is killing them. If anyone can help me figure this out, please email me. The tank was a birthday gift for my son for his birthday, he earned it by A, B honor roll and I don't want him to come home to all his fish being dead again.
Any help would be just wonderful, Thanks! Oh and the PH is correct too.
See this angers me. Our local pet store told me to use distilled water! Can I add spring water a little at a time and it not hurt them? They are all the same kind of fish too.
Yes I cleaned it first and let the water sit for 24 hrs. You may be right about not being meant to have fish. I am really beginning to wonder. My son worked so hard for the grades and this is what he asked for. Might have to get him to change his mind. LOL
Let me also say that I really appreciate everyones help. You all have been very helpful. I am going to have the water tested, again. Maybe I can save the fish. I do have a safe tank too. Please, keep replying if anyone has anymore advice or links I can learn from. Thanks so much.
I think I will use a different pet store too!
mrbts..... thanks for the link, very helpful.
I ve had the tank for 2 months at least. There are 5 small guppies in it.

Answer
I read somewhere that you shouldn't use distilled water in fishtanks as it doesn't have the right minerals that fish need.Maybe that could be the problem?
This site has a chart with some info about distilled water in fishtanks - they don't reccomend it, they're talking about betta's but i think it applies to all fish.

What is a good gift for an 80th birthday for a grandfather?

Magnus

How about some gift ideas? Grandfather turning 80...we have no idea what to get him?

Answer
Happy 80th Birthday to your Grandfather! Wow!!

A scrapbook may be a good idea. If you can get pictures of him through out his life, you could "interview" him and include his memories and thoughts and stories. You could also get stories from other members of the family to include. Or instead of making it a scrapbook of his life, you could make one of his cherished family members from when he was young. Either way, it's the stories and memories are what will truly make this a very special gift.

Remarkable Memories Digitally Designed Scrapbooks is a professional scrapbooking company that can help you put this together.
