dating and gift giving?

missiwant2

dating around the holidays can be a bit tricky. do you give a gift to someone you are dating provided you are still dating to each other during the holidays? what if you haven't been dating that long and you both are dating other people as well?

Answer
If you are dating someone, it is expected to exchange gifts. If it is someone you have dated , but are no longer dating, you may still give them a gift if you feel that you want to do something nice for the person and can afford it. I am sure the other person will appreciate your kind gesture.

What is a good gift idea for a first date?

Bentley

My brother is setting me up with someone from his bank. We have plans to meet up this weekend. As a nice gesture, I wanted to bring her flowers and burn her a CD of some R & B and some songs I think she'd like. Is that cheesy? what are some other ideas? She's a girly girl. She's 21 and I'm 26....

Answer
first date/blind date no gift

it is not cheesy but you do not even know her
don't appear desperate
just be yourself - nervous albeit -but she is probably nervous too

If she is rude or inconsiderate or ignores you or acts distracted; do not do the same back to her be considerate and ask if she would like to leave early or go back to ______________ make sure she is safely inside her car, house, apt, before you leave.

Do not let her walk alone to her car in any case.

if you do not hit it off you still be the PERFECT gentleman [girls talk and your behavior is also going to be a reflection of your brother] be very respectful and courteous, and try to make a new friend not girlfriend

if she is a knock out compliment the clothes or hair not her looks,
and if she is showing cleavage don't stare [this is difficult to do, but just don't do it] look her in the eyes
everyone has good features and qualities be honest and genuine

If on the date and you [both] are having fun you might buy her something small, a trinket or something, but nothing too expensive

if you have a second date - maybe take something you cut from the yard or neighbors flower bed nothing expensive but nice/pretty/casual

if you talked about music at all after you met each other maybe then the cd of the music you like or if you are both into music suggest for the third date that she can make you a cd of music she likes herself and you do a cd of music you like for her

this will give you something to talk about at least

hope this helps

I need to get my girlfriend (19), a one year gift. I have already written a poem for 6mo, and she already has given me a picture frame/scrapbook so I'm running out of good ideas. And she's said she's planning this date since I planned all the other ones so I just need a gift, no date ideas.

Answer
Love coupons. Since your girlfriend seems to like crafty things, a love coupon book seems like a great idea and that she will like it. Check out Datevitation.

What's the best thing I can do for my boyfriend before he leaves for boot camp?

Thunda Thi

My boyfriend of 3 years has plans for the Navy and is going to boot camp in September. His birthday is in the same month, but unfortunately, he won't be here with his family and friends to celebrate it. Any suggestions of what I can plan? A party with all of us? An awesome gift? A date with just us two?

Answer
You should give him everything. A date. A gift...but make it something he can take with him. And of course a birthday party!

For example, a law firm provides in-kind legal counsel over the course of a fiscal year and valuates it at $50,000. What is the correct gift date to use when recording this in-kind donation of services?

Answer
The actual gift date would be the date that the law firm agrees to provide the $50,000 in free legal services. Now, how this is recorded in the books depends on what type of accounting method is used (accrual or cash basis) and the circumstances surrounding the transaction. In this particular example, the company would credit the income account "gifts in kind" and debit an asset account such as "prepaid legal expense," since they haven't actually received the services yet. As the services are used, you would credit the asset account "prepaid legal expense" and debit the expense account "legal expenses" for the value of the services used each month.

When cost basis is at FMV as of date of gift, what about holding period?

JustQA

In case of property gifeted with loss, when subsequently sold at loss, the basis is FMV as of date of gift. But would the date of acquision is the date of gift or date of investment to determine long term/ short term loss.
Example: Date of gift 3-Jan-2007, Gift proceeds Investment 20-Oct-2007, Sell 14-Apr-2008. Would we consider this a short term loss or a long term loss?

Answer
Long term is over one year.

Short term is less than one year.

The gift was held longer than one year by the individual who gifted the property, therefore the gift is considered long-term.

Date of the purchase is October 20, 2007 and the sell date is April 14, 2008. The gift date is a date of transfer.

If the gift is an inheritance then the estate has to decide whether to use the date of death as the valuation date or to take the option of using the date six months after the date of death. Then you would use the date the estate used. With inherited property it is always considered long term.
