We didn't have much money growing up and my Mom always says food is one thing everyone uses!

She used to fill a box for each kid with their favorite snack foods, Ramon noodles, pudding cups, jerky etc... Things we normally couldn't afford day to day. Still a good idea for teenager boys!

Make your own gift baskets, as a example, maybe a colander filled with spaghetti noodles, sauce, hot pads and a pasta spoon.

Along that idea, Do you have a favorite recipe? Something everyone always asks for the recipe? Make a gift basket with it, maybe a pan and ingredients with the recipe typed on a nice card?

My kids like getting a tooth brush basket, fill a tooth brush holder with special accessories that each kiddo likes.

Oh, Sam's club has some very reasonable priced picture gifts. Cups, calenders even mens ties. Did you know that you can upload and order your pictures online and pick up your order at Sams or have them shipped to you? I just did a large order and they came out just beautiful

Blankets, we picked up the softest comforter at JCPennys that was only 38 or so dollars for a king!

With the uncertain times now I know many people are getting 72 hour emergency kits or survival food as gifts too.

Gift for a 40th surprise birthday?

I've always been of firm belief that adults don't give other adults birthday presents, except maybe a joke gift. But the guy's wife (my wife's cousin) has made it known gifts are expected. I think its rude, and I refuse to attend unless we don't bring a gift. My wife is mad and wants to buy a real gift and go. What do people think?

Just buy a gift a go. If not for them, for your wife. If this is effecting your personal life, it's not worth it to keep fighting it. Your wife's happiness is way more important than your rude friend.

But for the record, I totally agree. I think it would be incredibly rude to expect someone to bring presents to a party for an adult.

However, on the other hand, it is a "milestone" party and perhaps they dont usually have birthday parties or require gifts at the party?
Just a thought.

my mommy is 40 years old and i have no idea what to get her for christmas she already has all of rachel rays cooking sets and 104 piece knife set(i hate being around that) I have no idea what i am going to get my mommy she was looking at a Coffee maker but im afraid she is going to buy it!

(1) Make a series of cards 3-5 (use the computer for designs) and include a "special" gift -in the form of a note- in each one... for example:

a) Breakfast in bed for your mom on a Saturday or Sunday after the holidays

b) A foot massage after she returns from a particularly long flight.

c) A weekend morning where you and your mom enjoy some breakfast at a local cafe so that you can simply talk with each other.

d) A free car-wash for when the weather gets warmer.

e) Reading one chapter of her favorite book -aloud to her.

f) A clean-one-room-of-the-house coupon that your mom can cash in to you whenever she wants.

Do a search and see what the proper present would be for their particular year. One year I put together a "red basket" for my parents 40th...rubies was the proper present...so it was filled with "anything red"....cherries, licorice, Coke (red can) etc. They loved it! Just a thought...something different.

The parents, however, are required to file a federal gift tax return since they gifted an individual more than the $14,000 annual limit. Although the parents are required to file a gift tax return, no gift tax will be due unless/until they reach their lifetime maximum, currently set at $5.25 million.

Is it inappropriate to tip at a salon with a gift card?

I have a gift card for $40 at a salon in my town. I made an appt today top get my eyebrows, upper lip, and chin waxed and planned to put this on the gift card.

These services all-together come to $32. Is it appropriate to use the remaining balnace on the gift card ($8) to pay the tip?

The stylist would have to cash in the gift card (which usually involves a PIN or some other security number), then take the tip out of the register, which would be very inconvenient. So cash would be preferred.

you have to ask at the front desk if they will take $8 in cash and give it to the stylist as a tip in exchange for the gift card balance. I would call and ask if you can include the tip when paying with a gift card. your best bet is just to bring cash, it's best to tip in cash because then the stylist doesn't have to claim it on their taxes.
