Last year for my 35th birthday, he got me tickets to the Chicago Cubs game against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was a really fun experience! Go Cubs. :)

As a gesture of goodwill, I'd like to get him something he might enjoy as well, since he's practically family.

My wife isn't much help in giving me ideas. I guess they don't actually spend that much time talking.

What are some ideas to give a guy for a gift to let him know you appreciate his friendship?

Answer
I got my husband's boyfriend a new Samsung 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV, and he's really enjoyed it. So, maybe electronics are the way to go? That way you'll both be able to enjoy the game together in hi-def when getting tickets isn't feasible.

Whatever you decide, I'm sure he'll appreciate you thoughtful gesture of friendship.

If you were giving a customer a free gift, what percentage of their total purchase would it cost to you ?

Q. If you were buying this from a company that sold promotional items, how much would the customer have to spend for you to give them a gift worth 35-40 dollars ? Also, how big of a lot would you purchase assuming that this was the price of each ?

Answer
There are a couple of things you should take into consideration...

What is your profit margin on the items the customer is buying from you? With enough of a purchase of other items on their part, will it at least cover your costs on the item you want to give them for free?

Is this a long-term client, or a first time buyer from which you are wanting to gain more business? Both are equally important; but I would say if it's a long-term client that has given you repeat business, to be a little more generous with the freebies and attach a personal note with it including some personal piece of information that you have picked up about the client along the way. That let's them know you value your working relationships and also pay attention to what they say. For instance... is there a new addition to the family, is a child graduating from college/high school, new cars, recent birthday, some sort of business goal they achieved that you were privy to the information, etc...

If it's a new client, I wouldn't go too far overboard with free gifts. While something small says "thanks", something too large could convey the wrong message, and they could expect something equivalent everytime they make a similar purchase. You want them to know you value their business, but you don't want to go overboard doing it.

I would recommend something that you won't regret later if they choose to take their business elsewhere. Either way, include a personal note from yourself. It shows that you actually care about the customer and are willing to take time out of your day to do something a little extra for them.

One thing that I have learned over the years... is that people like to feel important. Personal touches in a variety of ways can really expand business relationships as well as bring in new clients. Whether it's a personal thank you note, a card on a client's birthday, an interesting article that is relavent to their business that you noticed when browsing the newspaper or internet... The best part about it... is that sometimes the smallest/easiest ideas can be unmeasureable when it comes to driving revenue, and they don't have to cost you an arm and a leg.
