Is there a way to buy a dinner plate or salad plate separately?

I accidentally broke one of my dinner plates and one of my salad plates. I got them as a wedding gift from Target 2 years ago. I looked on the website and say that the designs are still available, but they come in sets. Is there any way to just buy one plate?

Answer
A lot of dinnerware is sold "open stock", which means you can buy it by the piece. Have you tried a google search for just a plate in your pattern?

Can you buy something online but pay through stores?

Emily

I want to get my friend a gift from Target, but they only have it online. Can i pay for it at target and get shipped to my house? I don't have a credit card, pay pal etc and my parents don't want to use theirs.

Answer
No but if you really want it maybe go to a target and ask if they have it if not, ask if they can ship it in for you. As far as I know there won't be extra cost because other people. Can buy it also/they ship it in with other stock

Ash

I'm a girl, and my birthdays next Wednesday and I have no idea what to ask for.
I want gift cards for clothes but I don't know what to ask.
I have a laptop and a nook already and don't really want a phone or Ipod right now.
Help please?
Oh and I'm already having a volunteer b-day party and spending my summer volunteering
for others. But what do I ask for?

Answer
You were just like me when I turned thirteen last year. Since I'm a classy woman who is naturally professional, my dad got me a Stella McCartney designer perfume for 80 or 90 dollars. I still have it and it smells like fresh red roses. I think a nice wrist-watch is a good idea too. If you like art, you can ask for sketchbooks and materials. Or maybe like me, go to barnes and noble or from nook, buy a couple books like Brain Jack by Brian Falkener, Water For Elephants, or Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. Hope this helps! :)

How do I stop from killing myself?

Jenny

All my friends have turned on me. I made a mistake and told someone something I shouldn't have. I don't have any friends anymore. None. My parents don't support me. I've told them I'm depressed and I need help. They only say I need to "shut up and stop looking for attention". I cut myself all the time and I've almost killed myself 4 times. Please how do I stop.

Answer
Jenny, many people have this happen at some point in there life, they make a mistake and say or do something, and they lose their friends or even get cut off from their family.

Try to apologize one more time and let them know you know you made a mistake, and you're very sorry and you'd like back into the group. Ask one of the kinder friends if they can help you get back in with your friends. If it doesn't happen, trust me, other friends will come along, and what many of us know, that you don't know, is that life is so full of change. You will make new friends at some point. It's impossible that you wouldn't.

There is so much ahead. If you've told your parents you're depressed and need help and they are responding as you say, you need to go to a school counselor and tell them what you told us. Your parents attitude isn't helping you feel understood or secure and that's not your fault.

Since you've tried to give up four times you may need an anti-depressant until you get more stable. Many people also go through unstable periods in their life, and then it passes and life is good again.

When I was younger I was very unhappy because of the way 'certain women' treated me. I was very depressed and angry. I talked with this 80 year old man who was a minister at my church. He had counseled people for 50 years. He told me to repeat this affirmation over and over when I had spare time. I have told others on this board this affirmation.

It is: I love everyone and everyone loves me. - I did it and it worked. Keep doing it even if you feel uncomfortable saying it at first. If you say it enough your mind will believe you. Because no matter what people say, in the end we believe what we tell ourselves to be true.

And you are unique as one person here already said. You have gifts and things to offer that you haven't discovered and no one has the gifts exactly the same way you do. You deserve love and friendship, and you will have it again as it comes. You are just as worthy of love and friendship as anyone else. You just made a mistake.

Because you sound emotional and anxious, I think you may not want to do the affirmation, but I want you to do it for me, and for yourself, and for all the people who know you deserve the best. You just need to retrain your mind that you are loving and deserve love even if you don't feel it. We become what we tell ourselves.

You need to talk to your counselor because your parents aren't hearing you. And if you need to come back to this board, please come back.

Don't do anything like trying to give up, as someone said you can damage your body, and in the worst case survive and have brain damage or be in a coma with no way to reach out for help.

Throw that idea out of your mind right now as an option. You are going to start working on yourself right now. First you begin that affirmation right away, and say it with strong will and attention. You will see how it changes how easy you smile at others, how you think, and how you feel, and how others begin responding to you. Second, you go see your school counselor, and then if you need to come to this board everyday, you do that.

If you post and no one has anything nice to say, post again, and ask for only compassionate, guiding posts from others.

You are special in ways you don't even know, because no two people are alike. As time goes by and you begin to love yourself and discover new friends and what makes you happy and your goals in life, you will see how important you are, and how many lives you will affect in your lifetime. Right now because you're young you don't see this.

And I'm not hearing enough support from home, so get busy and make an appointment with your counselor.

xoxo

What bras from Victoria's Secret are of high quality and expensive?

I want to buy a bra for a special woman :P but I have no idea where to start. I want it to be a bra that does a little more..? What bra would that be? As long as it's under $100 it's all good :)

Answer
bra fitting is one of those sciences that are like operating a particle accelerator.
you can discover the secrets of the universe and you can also destroy the universe.
1)if you guess the wrong size,
2)if it fits wrong
3)is not what she likes/wants
4)etc

I strongly propose that instead of a bra, you get a gift card at Victoria's Secret and offer to drive her to the VS location of her liking and carry her bags. That would go a million times better I assure you.

How much does a used yukata cost in Japan?

Misa Amane

I know a new one costs about 80-100 dollars, I'm just wondering how much a used one would cost. On Ebay they all look fake, so don't give me prices based off of what you saw on there. ^_^ thanks!

Answer
If you are looking for one in the States, I don't know what to tell you. I could do some checking on Google and get back to you.

A used yukata of decent quality could run you as much as 1500-2000 yen, or more if the dyer is famous.
Best place to look for these is at temple "flea markets," usually held once a month, or every Saturday in the summer. Ryukoji near Kamakura has one of these markets.

Actually, a top quality indigo-dyed yukata (+ another color) on a white background, made in Japan, will cost you way more than $100. Many of the newer ones are purple, green, and bright yellow. Most are made in China. They are horrible.

I lived in Japan for years and I speak, read, and write the language.
Most Japanese women with any class at all hate these new yukatas that the young kids are wearing.

The color choice depends upon your age. If you are going to Japan, go shopping with a knowledgeable Japanese woman. If you have young Japanese friends, it is possible that their grandmother's would be pleased to be asked to sew one for you.

If you want to have it to keep, have it handmade, have it patterned with a traditional motif in indigo--they can do what is called "bokashi" so the pattern is not all dark blue. If you are under 25, have 1 or 2 additional colors--green bamboo leaves; simple red fireworks design.

You will also need some kind of an obi. Here again, it's best to ask for advice. You could ask for a "dento-teki moyo" (traditional pattern). It's always a good idea to mention that you like "shibui" things, no matter what you buy. Even the best Japanese gift shops have the mistaken impression that all non-Japanese like very showy red designs.

To get a good idea of quality Japanese gifts, kimono, yukata fabric, etc., go to Takashimaya's main Tokyo store not far from Tokyo Station. Then go somewhere else and find it cheaper. For this there are many neighborhoods in Shitamachi Tokyo which have less expensive specialty shops. Use Google.

If you want to get a decent used yukata in the U.S., the only thing I can suggest is to check out sites like the one below.
I'm not that crazy about Rakuten.

link:http://www.ichiroya.com/item/search.php?pg=1&itemcode=&keywords=&sritem=-Yukata&srhistory=0&srfabric=cotton&srcondition=very+good&srprice1=0&srprice2=0&onlysale=&tani=cm
Most of these are quite dark but several look like quality pieces. Go for the ones that say "handmade" and "quite old."
I saw one on the second page (I think) that has a touch of purple in it. It's very nice. If you are youngish, you could pair something like that with an obi in willow green or a subdued yellow.

You'll need to put in your measurements.

Kimono and yukata should be worn in a smooth line from the bust on down so as not to look like what Japanese call a "ku-no-ji." If you have a big bust and a small waist, you'll need to put some towels around your waist to even out the line.

How do I tell the person who presented me with a gift card that it has no value on it?

gift for women under 20 dollars
on ASTRO-THEOLOGY & Sidereal Mythology APPENDIX SIX Kersey Graves ...
gift for women under 20 dollars image

D C

I won a contest for having the best sailor outfit while on a cruise with members of my church. The pastor's wife promoted this contest and I was voted the winner. I was awarded a gift card and a book. When I arrived home, I call the toll free number to check the dollar amount on the gift card so that I would know how much I would have to add to it if needed. When I heard the amount of "zero dollar" balance on the card, I was shocked. How should I approach this matter, or should I just let it be and say nothing?

Answer
I would mention it to her in as polite a manner as possible. This happened to me and I was so glad that the receiver of the gift card finally mentioned it.

My husband and I and two other couples pooled our money to buy a gift card for the daughter of a friend when she got married. We had enough money to get her one of the more expensive items she had registered for, but we three wives couldn't agree on which item to get, so we settled for a gift card. I was the one who picked it up and I paid for it with cash, as that is what the other women had given me. I simply wrote all our last names and a nice message on the enclosed card, and gave it to the little girl who was collecting gifts at the reception.

Imagine my confusion when, three months after the wedding, the bride's stepmother asked me if we had given the card as a joke. It turns out that after they had opened all their gifts, they took the card and picked out some items they had asked for but had not received. I cannot imagine how terrible it must have been for them to be told at the register that the card did not have any balance on it. I know that I, hearing about it later, wanted to crawl under a table and hide :) I dug out my receipt and took it to the store with the gift card. Sure enough, I had the receipt, but the gift card did not have the triple digit balance it was supposed to have. The manager explained to me that because the transaction was a cash transaction, they needed to do a little research, but that they would call me back the next day. The next day she called me and told me that they had had an overage in that exact amount on the day I purchased my card. She was kind enough to mail the card to the bride and groom, who had moved out of state, and she also sent me a $20 gift card for my trouble.

If you get a cold or unfriendly reception from the pastor's wife, it is possible that it isn't just an innocent mistake, and I personally would just let the matter drop. But I cannot believe she would give you a valueless gift card and think that you would not figure it out, so I am sure there must be some other explanation. Let her know about it so she can figure out the problem and get it fixed.

What kinds of generic gifts do men like?

SpitzFire

I need some good gift ideas for men - stuff that any man would like. Just as you can almost always buy bath stuff for women or gift cert to clothes store, what kinds of generic gifts do men like? I'm talking men in the 40+ year old age range. I already have stuff like gift cert to home depot, microbrewery samples etc. Ok guys out there - what kind of generic gift would YOU like to receive? Please try to keep ideas in the $20-$50 range.

Answer
Cologne, nail care kit, pajama pants, gift card to Total Wine and More(or some other upscale alcohol beverage store). I think I would try to stay away from the gift card thing though because it seems like you put less thought into it. Most men love getting manicures even though they don't like to admit it. And pajamas are always a safe way to go and you can get a good brand for under 50 dollars. You can get a great nail care kit for under 50 dollars and every man is diligent about taking care of there nails. Good luck!

Answer
What you need to do is go to one or more of their stores, and ask the customers themselves - it's their opinion that matters, not ours. Create and hand out a simple questionairre. For better chances of getting them back, offer a small reward for doing so - maybe a 5 dollar gift card or something.

D) status conscious
E) price conscious

I have a combined birthday party to go to this weekend for a 7 year old girl and a 3 year old boy, and I have no idea what to get for each of them. Especially the 7 year old girl. Please help??

Answer
I have a cousin that will be turning 7 and I was going to get her some play makeup and maybe a purse and jewelry.

I also have a son that just turned 2 yrs old but he acts much older. He is into cars, monster trucks (his favorite is Grave Digger), Spiderman and Superman, anything from the movie Cars, and basketball and baseball stuff. We got him a adjustable basketball hoop that goes from 4 ft. to 6 ft. at Wal-Mart for about $30 and he's been shooting hoops like crazy for the past week! Also, depending on your budget...any of the motorized trucks, cars that they can ride in. We got our son a Spiderman 4 wheeler and it was only $65! He rode it the rest of the night at his birthday party!!!

What should I give my dad for his birthday?

U wish U w

His birthday is on September 28. He's not like most other dads. He's 65% boring and 35% totally awesome. He doesn't realy like sports, building, hunting, or eating. I think the ipad would be perfect for him, but my mom won't let me take lots of money out of my account, and she says it has to less than 25 bucks. (and no, she is NOT a mean mom, she just wants me to save up money for the future) PLz Help!!!
Thanks,
Annoymous

Answer
Awww. Thats sweet. :)

Ideas:
1)Take him out to dinner so you can have one on one time with him.

2) Gift card to his favorite store or restaurant.

3) Something that reminds you of a great time you had with him.

4) Something that relates to an inside joke between the two of you.

Is a Dr. Weil professional juicer an appropriate gift for a 9th wedding anniversary?

guyger1

I'm thinking of getting juicer for my wife for our 9th anniversary. we're trying to be more healthy and i thought this would be something the whole family could enjoy and see benefits from.

Answer
My personal belief is that stuff for the house should be bought regardless and should not be given as a gift, unless it is something unnecessary and she has specifically asked for it. I think that personal occasions should have a personal gift given. I am someone who will never ask for something personal and will be more practical and ask for an appliance for a gift just because I feel bad asking him to spend money on me, but he loves me enough to do it anyway. Even if someone is practical, they would enjoy something personal better, and you should buy the juicer anyway because, as you said, the family can enjoy it.

Get her something that SHE can enjoy, not the family.

What sporting event tickets are good for a gift?

mysteryper

I would like to buy my husband a ticket for some sports event in Phoenix. Problem is I am not native to Phoenix so I don't know any of the local teams. He is native to here and I know he loves sports. 50th birthday if it makes any difference. All answers appreciated.

Answer
If he likes basketball, the local professional team is the Phoenix Suns.

If he likes football, the local professional team is the Arizona Cardinals.

If he likes baseball, the local professional team is the Arizona Diamondbacks.

If he likes hockey, the local hockey team is the Phoenix Coyotes.

I don't see any local golf tournaments unless you are willing to travel to California or Texas.

If your husband likes college sports, Arizona State University (ASU) also has several sports teams (baseball, football, basketball ...).

On April 12 there will be a NASCAR race at the Phoenix International Raceway.

The local professional woman's basketball team is the Phoenix Mercury.

If he is interested in Arena Football, the local professional team is the Arizona Rattlers.

I hope this helps.

Answer
Wow much respect for trying hard for such a long distance relationship, mine failed. :-z
My advice is that you are quite young to be moving on your own such a far way from home and so is he at that age too. Moving for love is such a big decision in your life and quite frankly you are way too young for drama like that but I can see why you want to do it as I have been in the same situation before too except my gf (now ex) lives on the other side of the country. When we are this young we do things without thinking long and hard about it, like now you want to just be with him no matter what you have to do for it. In the long run, once you move here or he moves there are you both going to be happy together in 6 months after that?? Teenagers have much to learn, myself included and from what I have learn't it might not be such a good idea because there is going to be more to life than that. If you want to be this guy, fine my advice is don't move just yet wait at least you both are 18 and abit more mature adults as if you are still together and want to move to be with eachother it will be easier then. For now take advantage of technology with webchat, webcams, emails and even hand written letters and gifts in the mail. Hope all works well whatever you decide. Good Luck!

Host family presents form a German to a family from New Zealand?

Janica

I'm from Germany and I will spend the next year in New Zealand. Maybe you have any ideas for host family presents you would like to have from Germany (maybe because it is typical German)

Thanks for all answers (and I'm Sorry my English is bad)

Answer
Hello!
I am a New Zealander and am currently on a year exchange in Demark. I think you should take a German cook book and some packaged typical german food (know that i think about it, maybe it isn't from Germany but take MARIBOU CHOCOLATE!!!)
Also definitely a little photo album of your home and the city you live in, the nature where you live, pictures of your friends and family and showing YOUR personal way of life. This will all be very interesting for them to see.
Don't worry too much about gifts, from experience as a host family myself and now as an exchange student, I'm confident in telling you they are not important at all. It is just interesting for your family to experience things from your culture.
good luck.

Then I will give him a whole bunch of his favorite candy. But I think this idea is kinda boring. I wanna do something more for him so he wont ever forget it! :] No he's not my boyfriend. He likes animals, xbox, and music.

Answer
Im 19 now, at age 13 i wanted computers and technology. times have changed since then and kids want these things younger and younger. If i was 15 and got candy, id be pretty dissapointed. Get him a new xbox game. But as a gamer, ask him what one he wants, id be disappointed if i got a crappy game, or one i already have. Or get him a gamestop gift card for around 65 bucks, because xbox games run for 60 dollars plus tax.

Answer
I would say DON'T! They promise to give you like what, 10% off? And then they charge you 25% interest! Add it up and you are paying them back 25% of your purchases. Meaning you saved 10%, but they are still getting that 15% profit from you! You are not saving any money! They are making more money this way, and they make you think you are saving money! So yeah, don't use them!

A study was conducted to estimate the mean amount spent on birthday gifts for a typical family having two children. A sample of 120 was taken, and the mean amount spent was $195.37. Assuming a standard deviation equal to $37.87, find the 90% confidence interval for m, the mean for all such families (show all work).

Answer
Sample mean = 195.37
Standard deviation = 37.87
Standard error of mean = s / â n
Standard error of mean = 37.87 / â 120
SE = 37.87/10.9545
Standard error of mean 3.457
Confidence interval 195.37-(3.457)(1.655)
and 195.37+(3.457)(1.655)
90% (189.65, 201.09)

Note:
In your question, you have stated 'assuming a standard deviation of 37.87).
I have computed the confidence interval with sample mean 195.37 and sample standard deviation 37.87 which means you should use the t-distribution (rather than normal distribution) which has a value of 1.655.

If your standard deviation is the population standard deviation you would use 1.645 instead.
Assuming sigma (population standard deviation is known), here is another confidence interval.
Sample mean = 195.37
Standard deviation = 37.87
Standard error of mean = Ï / â n
Standard error of mean = 37.87 / â 120
SE = 37.87/10.9545
Standard error of mean 3.457
Confidence interval 195.37-(3.457)(1.645)
and 195.37+(3.457)(1.645)
90% confidence interval (189.68, 201.06)

The two intervals are more or less the same because of the large sample size.

I just received a burgundy leather jacket and needing help with wearing this jacket for the winter?

Q. I received A burgundy leather jacket as a birthday gift. What color leather boots would look nice with this jacket or leather purse? Thanks!!

Answer
In this pic the girl is totally working it:http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://s2.thisnext.com/media/230x230_no_border/vintage-burgundy-80s-leather_7135ABEE-Vintageous-yellow.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.thisnext.com/item/3EA9292E/72D507D7/vintage-burgundy-80s-leather&usg=__3p3Cp2b1sAgPLqFZdKB5gnPvyRE=&h=191&w=230&sz=33&hl=en&start=10&um=1&tbnid=DYixq0pA0h0lfM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=108&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dburgundy%2Bleather%2Bjacket%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1G1GGLQ_ENUS299%26sa%3DN

This year in fashion has been all about mixing-leathers, colors, metals, prints... So own your jacket! You could even mix in some colored scarves (keep the rest of you look simple-all black), like another answerer mentioned:orange!

Here's another look, a bit more funky vintage, but I love it: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2361/2015931359_446b5b5273_b.jpg

What are some great advice about achieving wealth and power?

gift ideas for women turning 90 image

Michael S

The two things I want most in life is wealth and power. So far I do not date and always turn down women who ask. I make the excuse I do not drive or have a high paying job or I am boring. I avoid going places with friends if i know it costs money. I eat meals at home. I bake homemade bread. I wear shoes until they have holes in them I do that with clothes as well. I shop at thrift stores. I only buy metal plates as they are easier to clean and are less likely to get broken if dropped or melt if I use the stove. I bought an Alienware PC and I expect to keep it for 5 or more years. I make all food from scratch and will grow or raise it if possible. I live in a boarding house and I sleep on a air mattress. When i had a studio apartment i never bought furniture. I am in College and I will use the books on reserve or will try to create a study group so I can avoid buying a book. I will walk 15 miles to school or a job to avoid paying bus fares. I do not own a car and have no desire to own a house in the USA. I never buy name brand foods I always buy the cheapest i can find. I do not eat pork or beef because of cost. I stopped celebrating christmas so I do not feel guilty about not buying gifts for other people. I never donate money and never give it to beggars. If I were to marry a woman i want her to be a wealthy lawyer with my type of mindset. When I have extra money i will buy CDS and saving bonds. If i were to have enough to buy a house I would rent out the rooms to others, Grow Vegetables and fruits to sell to other people. I have started learning how to build batteries and generators so I can create my own energy. I learned how to make lye so i can make homemade soap. I recycle and compost 90 percents of my trash. I even reuse old batteries. I will take them apart for the Manganese dioxide which I reuse when making homemade alkaline batteries. I just learned how to make solar cells. I know how to build nuclear reactors so i just need to find Uranium or Radium. I have started tutoring, repairing pcs, cooking, to make more cash. What are ideas that can assist me achieve the wealth i so desire.

Answer
Living within your means is an important but an insufficient prerequisite for wealth and power.

The pursuit of wealth and power is about social relationships and legal relationships.

You appear to be dangerously deficient in social skills.

I suggest that you concentrate on improving your social skills so you can improve the quality of your social relationships and the legal relationships in your future.

Might I suggest that you join your local Rotary Club, Toastmasters, or Elks Club and begin to get involved in your local community.

How to handle my Mother-in-Law?

Squishy

I will try to make this as short as possible. My husband and I are having problems with his mother and we aren't sure how to handle it.

I'm sure as the typical story-my mother in law had no issue with me until my husband told her he wanted to propose to me. All of a sudden she begins telling my husband I will cheat on him, take his money and run, that I am not Christian because I am Catholic (yeah ...) and that I will be nothing but a burden to him. He had several choice words with her and her attitude turned a better path for a while but then hit rock bottom again.

My husband is Military and is gone 90% of the time. My husband and I will both call her and text her to tell her he is leaving and she will not answer the phone, we always end up having to call his father to get her on the phone and then she plays stupid saying she had no idea he was leaving and starts the fake crying bits.

He has tried talking to her about these issues on the phone, through text, and even email. She completely ignores it and changes the subject. The last email she told him that she hopes he enjoys laying in the bed hes made for himself and that I am a liar .. but if he ever wanted to he could come back to her no strings attached.

I have only said one bad thing to her and that is when I found out while my husband was in Afghanistan that she was in the hospital for a very very serious condition- I blew up on her after she was cleared from the hospital because she could have died and my husband wouldn't have found out until it was to late. I have never spoken to her again.

Even now while he is away she hasn't even asked for his mailing address yet emails him telling him she doesn't like having to tell people she doesn't know how he is because he won't tell her, (which is not the case). Two Christmases ago while he was away I pretty much had to force her to even send him a Christmas present which was the only box she ever sent him.

This is pretty much a bipolar roller coaster ride that is stuck on repeat. One minute she wants nothing to do with us and the next she gets pissy because she doesn't know what is going on in his life.

I just don't know how to even begin to understand this woman. I do not want my husband to completely cut ties with his mother but he will if this doesn't get corrected. How can a mother refuse to speak to her son while he is home only three months a year. Even if she doesn't care for me that does not mean you stop speaking to your son when with his job- you never know what can happen. There is much much more & worse to this but I wont be plastering very personal business on the internet lol.

Does anyone have any type of advice or tactics on how to handle this situation .. anything at all to try and get this woman to open her eyes. I would deeply appreciate any helpful information. This has been going on for years and I can't take much more before I don't care anymore and I don't want that to happen- it may be a woman thing but I wouldn't want to cut ties with my mother and so I don't want to see my husband have to do that.
@ Kat- I do send her gifts every year and once she see i've sent things like for Birthday and Christmas she will send us something. Last year we sent Christmas gifts and she told us she wasnt sending us anything- thats fine, I don't care but once she got our gifts she sent stuff to us as she felt obligated to. It was fake and I wanted to send it back but we left it alone. As far as tweeting she has blocked both me and my husband.

Answer
She is one difficult mother-in-law but do not let yourself be stressed out for good.
Try "ignoring" her dramatics. Focus more on your relationship with your husband. If she wants a no communication policy, fine. Just be the good daughter-in-law by remembering special occasions.
Send her gifts and tweet her at times. If she doesn't reciprocate, fine.
It's her problem, not yours.

How do I get started opening my own small store?

I've been debating with the idea of going out on my own - or continuing to work under someone else. My thoughts have leaned towards opening a school supply store, which would carry everything for students/teachers both. I live in a very small town - the only decent store we have is Wal-Mart. I used to be Asst. Mgr of a dollar store here, and alot of the parents/teachers/students would come in complaining because they needed to complete a project, or just needed one more thing off their school list, and Wal-Mart didn't have it. So, they would have to drive 40-60 minutes just to get what they needed. I think this idea would take off in a small town that's centered around its children and education, and it would be helpful to the parents as well. How do I get started? I have NO idea!!

Answer
The first step is to do your research. Starting a small business takes a lot of courage. But, as they say, courage does not pay the bills. To be successful â to stay in business â you need more than courage. You need a combination of hard work, skill, perseverance, and lots of luck.

Some things you need to consider:

- "How can I support my family while I build up by business?"
- How long will it take this business to reach the financial goal you have?
- How big is the school/student population in your area?
- Do you think the size of the market is enough to keep your business profitable?
- If not, what other things can you sell that this market would want?
- Do you have the resources to lease a store, buy inventories, and jumpstart the business?
- If none, are there resources that you may be able to get, keeping in mind that loan programs even that of SBA requires collateral and equity investment

You may want to read the article "How to Start a New Business Successfully" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol51/launch.htm , which lists six steps to launch a new business successfully:

1. Provide a benefit.
2. Determine the fit with your market.
3. Right timing is everything
4. Be ready to support your business
5. Develop a blueprint for success (your business plan)
6. Market, market, market

How do you start a business?

Carrie P

What's the best way to start a business from scratch? I have a really good idea for a retail store/cafe, but I don't have the first clue about how I should go about getting finance for it and where to open, or if I should even start as an online store first. Can someone please give me tips on the best way to start a business.

Answer
Starting a small business takes a lot of courage. But, as they say, courage does not pay the bills. To be successful â to stay in business â you need more than courage. You need a combination of hard work, skill, perseverance, and lots of luck.

Some things you need to consider:
- "How can I support my family while I build up by business?"
- "What are my abilities?"
- "Is there a market for the product or service I have chosen?"
- "How long will it take this business to reach the financial goal I have?"

Here are the basic steps to launch a new business successfully:

1. Provide a benefit.
2. Determine the fit with your market.
3. Right timing is everything
4. Be ready to support your business
5. Develop a blueprint for success
6. Market, market, market

I recommend that you start reading and learning more about the business you are planning to start. You did not specify the type of retail store you want (e.g. is it a clothing store, sports store, gift store, etc) but here are some guides to starting a retail operation

I suggest you start preparing your business plan. Even though you may not apply for loans from financial institutions, the process of business planning can help you think through your business. It can help you determine the costs involved, how to get suppliers to sell to you, how to market the store, expected profitability, etc. Here are sample business plans for a retail store that you can check out:

Sometimes you may want to have someone guide you as you start your business and help you with the right things to do. There are several places where you may be able to find a mentor:

What should I get as a wedding gift to a couple moving to the UK?

Amaunette

A friend of mine is getting married within the month, and after the marriage, she and her husband will be moving to the UK. So any wedding gift I get will have to be small. I was thinking of a gift certificate, but I don't know any stores in the UK. Do you have any ideas for a gift certificate I could get that would be useful for a new couple moving to the UK? I would also probably have to buy it online, and I don't know exactly to what city they're moving to, so it would have to be a national chain.

Answer
Some of the national chainstores here in the UK are
Debenhams, Argos, BHS, Boots, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and House of Fraser. I think they all probably have websites. Personally I'd go for Argos who have stores in most cities here, and they are excellent for people who are setting up a home as they sell all sorts and are reasonably priced.

You know, say if one of your friends is pretty but in a way that makes her resemble a cute little mouse, squirrel or rabbit? They're sweet but very shy and speak softly and dress down, with soft pastel colours that don't draw much attention to them. What would you buy for this type of woman? They don't seem like a girly woman or a tomboy or interested in many material possessions or wear any jewellery that you've seen. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to answer this question.
